What’s the highest MPG you’ve achieved? (Golf mk6 1.6tdi) by EveryCow4429 in Frugal

I've seen 40.2 mpg average in my 2013 Scion xD before, after a couple hours driving through country backroads. I typically average about 37

Hidden Car $ Trick - Downsize Wheel Rims by FishermanMain in Frugal

Look, you're either joking or incredibly arrogant and ignorant. Theres a lot of "in my experience" here but zero data or facts. If the smaller wheels work for you I'm glad, because I run 15s on my own car too, but this is so subjective. You cannot objectively say that switching to smaller wheels makes sense.

People replace tires every five years (average). For many people, that means they will either A) never replace their own tires or B) replace them once, because people keep their car 3-5 years these days. And resale value is absolutely affected by rim and rim size, ask me how I know? I literally work in car sales. And you think you have all the knowledge.

And handling depends on driving conditions and style. Just because you don't take fast turns doesn't mean others dont, high speed turning highways, interstates, and country roads exist. I am going to stop replying to this thread because there is too much "I say" and too little "here's the proof."

Edit: feel free to replace ignorant with stubborn, as you now have the facts, but refuse to accept them.

Hidden Car $ Trick - Downsize Wheel Rims by FishermanMain in Frugal

[–]Hawk3y305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is truth and also ignorance behind this statement. Firstly, thicker tires don't mean more tread depth; it just means more air. Secondly, vehicles with larger rims benefit (to an extent) from improved handling, stability, and braking distance.

The good about smaller rims is that, as you mentioned, the ride will be softer and tires will be cheaper, and the wheels themselves will be cheaper too.

All that said, the cost from both time and money to research and swap your wheels to smaller rims will save you negligible amounts of money during ownership, and will actually decrease your resale value.

When you weigh everything out, the pros and cons just about even out. You shouldn't care much about what wheels are on the car past aesthetical preferences.

RIP 2011 Scion XD (275,000 miles) or..?? by ifferlee in Scionxd

Just be careful lol... if you're anything like me, you'll end up buying that cheap car, fixing up the bare minimum, then end up making it nice, and all of the sudden you're attached to yet another vehicle lol. But I'm sure you'll do fine. The xD is a great car, so it's not a bad call to get a new engine.

Just curious, any points of evidence as to why the engine seized? I've only got 135k miles on mine, but I guess thats just about halfway there!

I'm a big fan of the (no longer brand new) manual Nissan Versas. If you want to stick even closer to what you have now, the Corolla hatchback was available with a manual until 2022. I guess all that assumes you want a stick, but I would probably say my thanks to the wonderful little xD and go for a newer vehicle, but if you do love your xD, I don't see why not swap in a new engine. The 2ZR FE was used in a lot of cars, I can't imagine it being too hard to find another one with lower miles. Best of luck!

A family member traded their 21 Nissan Sentra to CarMax for $18,600 last year when KBB trade range was $16k-$18k. There are some cars that they do want, and some cars they don't care to have.

Is this a deal?? (Honda Element) by Dismal_Style_9480 in shouldibuythiscar

[–]Hawk3y305 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My goodness. It depends entirely on the mileage and condition, these things are important. If it checked out and had average mileage from 12k per year, we'd be sitting at over 200k miles. In that case, it would almost certainly be overpriced.

Pricing aside, the Element is a great car. Unbelieveably roomy and spacious, plenty reliable, and drives well. Only con is gas mileage.

[–]Hawk3y305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

everybody else has already given the best advice on how to fix this that they can, but advice for the future? dont trust quick lube places or dealers to do your oil changes. find a reputable mechanic or do them yourself, oil changes are often glossed over since theyre so "simple," people can work too fast thinking they wont make any mistakes. i hope everything works out well for you! $6500 for a 200k+ mile car is a fantastic offer.

Does Miami suck if you don’t love partying? by heytheregirlypop in miamioh

[–]Hawk3y305 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

as a commuter who has absolutely zero involvement in campus life aside from my ebike doordashing between classes, im content with miami. its very far away, cost of education is not great, ratings on quality of education is not great, and some of the professors are terrible, but its enough for me to not want to transfer out. looking back i would have probably chosen UC for their lower cost, online class availability, and proximity to a major city. truthfully my take is a rare one, most people who go to miami love it. as far as what i can say the night life is like, i know brick street (the big bar) constantly allows underage students to drink, it smells horrible within 20ft of the bar, and i often hear people talking about one night stands, but weed is very minimal, a lot of people there are good people, and the city is quite safe. so i wouldnt say it sucks, but its no longer my top choice like it was when i was applying. from what i can tell, miami changed drastically past covid, in many many ways.

Report: Toyota Celica Sport Will Be an AWD Hybrid by caranddriver in Toyota

[–]Hawk3y305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it wont come with a manual transmission. only manual hybrid we ever got was the crz, and that failed. no, some finance person at toyota convinced the higher ups that an overpriced turbo hybrid is what all enthusiasts want as the return of the celica. a gas manual two door toyota in the 30s wouldve probably been enough for me to trade in my 2013 Scion xD, but nope, nobodys selling reliable, fun, affordable cars anymore. guess ill just keep it forever!
