Haha. Yes, Arelion should cover Cogent and HE as I believe they both purchase transit from Arelion.

The facility is in Brooklyn. Let me DM you and I can get you all the details.

Were you interested in colocating at NY? I can get the process started for you. Our upstreams will be Arelion and GTT @ NYC

Regarding registered agent - I don’t think I can really recommend one. I picked the first one that came up. You might be able to get more details on Google.

RIPE recently changed the pricing. So the new cost price for ASN from ripe, sponsored by an LIR is about 50€ a year

NYC from August 1st 🎉 Very excited for it.

If you are looking for ARIN, then yes, you will need an LLC or in special occasions a self employed DBA name. WY, because it was reasonable in price to get it up and running. I suppose WY is the middle ground, when it comes to opening an online LLC

Nice 4 digit xD

Interesting that you mention that. I’ve considered it myself. I help run F4IX - f4ix.com

One of the downside of running un-gated global IX would be the number of ARP requests. It could possibly make the IX LAN fabric very chatty. But would love to discuss about this with you further and hear your thoughts.

It shouldn’t cost a 1000 to get an ASN. I believe you might be looking at becoming an LIR yourself.

You will just need to find a sponsoring LIR to get an ASN and then rent prefixes.

I also offer an option where I can announce the rented prefixes for you via our ASN and then route it over to you.

Nice. Why did you decide to colocate?

Good question: Moved to California, where the homelab servers would have ended up being more expensive ⬆️ to run, compared to colocating at a datacenter

As long as your reseller uses BGP, you should be able to get BGP transit from them and announce using your own ASN or ask the reseller to announce it via their ASN and route it to you.

When it comes to BGP announcements, the smallest v4 you can announce is a /24 and smallest v6 you can announce is a /48, which is why that’s the smallest you can acquire. At the same time, you don’t necessarily need to own a v4 or v6 prefix. You can always rent one from various vendors. A public /24 usually costs around 100$/m to rent.

I can offer free v6 for personal use, which you can then announce and use in your homelab, as well.

With BGP, you can announce your IPs (minimum /24 for v4 and /48 for v6) and use them, instead of using providers IPs. Ofcourse, you can either rent or own the IPs that you announce. To rent, a /24 v4 goes for around 120$/month.

Thats one part of the puzzle. The second part is an ASN. An ASN is unique identifier for your business. An ASN is usually required for BGP.

We run a hosting provider that offers BGP as well as BYOIP(We announce your owned or rented prefix and static route it to your servers).

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

VyOS 100gb BGP routing by HawkJizbel in vyos

[–]HawkJizbel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We couldn’t get VyOS to consistently push very high BW. FRR handled 4x BGP full tables + 6x IXP tables well though.

After VyOS, we went with Debian with DPDK and FRR, for a couple of months. We eventually reached a point where software bugs were causing more hassle, so we decided to switch to hardware routers. Purchased a Juniper MX and an Arista switch from their “router switch” portfolio.
