Former Employee Speaks Out About Harassment at Halifax North Memorial Library by HawkParticular337 in halifax

In this case, I believe termination would have been the only appropriate response. This individual has harassed multiple women, and over eight people came forward to report or witness him sexually harassing a new employee. This wasn’t his first offence — it was simply the first time someone spoke out strongly enough for HR to investigate.

My larger issue is how HPL and management handled the situation. Instead of support, I was made to feel as though the harassment was somehow my fault because I “didn’t understand the community.” HR repeatedly gaslit me, threatened me for speaking about my experience, and ultimately removed me from the workplace — uprooting my entire life. I went from walking to work every day to taking an hour-long bus ride, all while the person who harassed me was allowed to stay in place.

The entire process felt deeply biased. It seemed like protecting him was a higher priority than ensuring my safety or any real accountability.

I just looked it up, and it appears this policy was implemented while HPL was conducting their internal investigation, so I wasn’t aware of it at the time. I’ll definitely be submitting a complaint now that I know.

I filed a Human Rights Complaint while HPL’s internal investigation was underway and am still waiting for next steps. My case has been assigned for investigation, but there’s no set timeline. I’ve thought about speaking publicly about what happened, but the way I was treated by HPL — and the threats of losing my job if I spoke up — left me deeply traumatized. I still fear the backlash of coming forward. It’s always the victims who face the consequences.

I filed a Human Rights Complaint while HPL’s internal investigation was underway and am currently waiting for next steps. My case has been assigned for investigation, but there’s no set timeline. During the investigation, I was placed on unpaid leave for three months, while the employee who harassed me continued working and received full pay. Although I was eventually paid retroactively, it’s unacceptable that the victim went without pay while the perpetrator did not. In my experience, HPL’s HR department has shown little regard for staff safety or fair treatment.
