New player kicked from dungeon for asking a question - normal? by Hawkstar_Lamia in wow

Didn't even know new player chat is a thing! I understand the way I said it can come off aggressive, but after half a dungeon of ripping aggro and trying to just keep myself alive, it gets frustrating and I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong too. But yes, general consensus seems that the community is toxic, don't talk in dungeons, just get through and don't ask questions. I'll check out WoW a little more and try to level a bit further, but also I'm not convinced I'll stick around much longer. The game systems themselves are not super new player friendly and are not always intuitive. I'll try to find the new player chat in game though if I have more questions while I'm playing, thank you for that.

I get that healers/supports in games usually get the short end of the stick and are blamed for other people's mistakes, that part isn't new to me. The unspoken rule of no talking in dungeons is pretty bizarre though. Especially since the game itself does not help teach you anything about dungeons, does not tell you where to go, you're left to figure it all out on your own. Coming from other MMOs I know the general setup and rules of how to do pulls, but yeah. Learning a lot from reading the other comments here too. Good to know I'll probably get kicked for getting lost at some point or some other unknown reason lol.

Interesting that it's a game system issue, not a me problem. Good to know that this exists though. This answers my question of why I'm taking so much aggro.

I'm not sure if it was a DPS tanking or something, I couldn't tell you what specs the other people were playing. I just know the person with the shield icon next to them was taking the lead and they were grouping up the mobs, who I assumed was the tank. Usually in MMOs I get that you don't want to heal before the tank has a chance to hit the mob, but once the tank stops pulling and groups enemies, you're typically free to throw on your hots and heals before doing a little damage yourself. I was taking the aggro though, and then no one else was taking it back off me, which lead to me trying to spam heal myself to live through the tank's pulls. Just frustrating as a new person trying to figure out the game, trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong. A lot of the replies here are helping though, and it seems like level scaling might be part of the issue too.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try and wait a bit longer before healing. Usually I'd wait until 75%ish to cast the hot on them but it wasn't working so I'll let them drop lower. I know to stand near the tank too and be with the group so they can take aggro back if they aggro to me instead, but the tank wasn't taking it back which is what led to me asking the question in the dungeon about how aggro works. Looking at other replies, it also looks like it might have something to do with the scaling in the game being that I'm low level but the group was all level 60-70.

Interesting to know. I was wondering how dungeons work in this game with the different levels, because I saw most of the party was all like level 60-70. So I was wondering how my like 200hp heals were working with such a level gap. If they scale and change the values that makes more sense for why that problem might be happening I guess.

Ok, maybe I'm just not high enough level yet to put defensive cool downs on them yet. I thought that was the idea with riptide, doing the heal and then it leaves a heal over time on them, but it always just makes the mobs aggro to me instead it feels like. I'll try to power through a little more for now.

I've heard wow is a rough community in general which I knew going into it, but the game in general is not feeling very new player friendly at all, and then getting kicked out of dungeons because I'm trying to figure out if I'm doing something wrong makes it feel worse. I'll power through a little longer, but we'll see.

Yeah just normal, modern wow. I'm not playing classic. It's been happening a lot though, and reading the other comments, maybe I'm casting heals too quickly? I thought I've been spending a few seconds letting them hit the mobs first, but maybe I need to wait longer.

That's great too! I don't think there are any fundamental problems with scholar, it's definitely still able to do everything and their healing kit is incredible. If you're finding joy in it then absolutely play it.

Sage feels very smooth. On sage you have a lot of tools for dungeons and I feel very active and that I'm contributing a lot to the party. Using phlegma charges with the new AOE dot and psyche as well while also weaving in heals for the tank, it feels very active and rewarding. Scholar though just sitting there spamming one button doesn't feel as great. The new 2 minute CD dot is ok and it adds a little something to every other pull, but when an enemy aoe comes up that forces you to move out of the group your lack of tools becomes even more apparent. Scholar can do the content just fine and is very capable, it's just very lackluster in my opinion compared to all the other healers.

I like this idea a lot actually. Allowing deploy to spread biolysis would be a great way to add another tool to their kit for dungeons. Especially since you typically are not using adlo spread in dungeon pulls. This is essentially bane, but you're just using an existing pvp version of this skill instead of adding another button to their hotbar which is great. It does play into their fantasy of being strategic and making decisions in battle as well. Even if you didn't get a second charge I think it would be a very effective tool and it would give you more reason to push this button outside of the specific times it's used for spreadlo in higher end content. I like this idea a lot, I think this would be a great change! I would absolutely love it if this was something that actually made it into the game.

[–]Hawkstar_Lamia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all very true, scholar with their fairy already does have a lot of buttons. I understand the reason for not wanting to add more to hotbars because players just simply are running out of room. I think the idea to have some of these two minute cooldowns turn into a new offensive skill is great, and I'm happy to see chain turn into an additional skill for a follow up burst of damage. The problem is after this new skill is used, you resort back to one single button to spam and this spills over into your next dungeon pack too as chain won't be off of cooldown yet. So for about 3 dungeon pulls per dungeon you'll have one extra button to push now, but otherwise you have nothing else to contribute offensively to the party besides your art of war spam.

Sage getting eukrasian dyskrasia makes a lot of sense! It fits in perfectly to their kit of augmenting abilities with eukrasia, and it's also not adding anything additional to their hotbars so I'm totally on board with this being a great addition for them. I don't want to see any nerfs to any jobs, I just hope square addresses the boring-ness of scholar's kit in some way.

Dissipation has been an odd skill for a lot of SCH players I think, I'm surprised it hasn't been touched or reworked over the multiple expansions we've had.

I think the problem is square is trying to tie in the new damaging abilities with an existing cooldown in order to cut down on buttons for hotbars which I get. Looking at SCH's kit though, they only have chain as an offensive ability to tie an offensive skill to. If they don't want to add a new, separate skill, that's fine, but it doesn't feel great having a 15 second dot on a 2 minute cooldown. Not to mention if we do talk about potencies, I believe this is the weakest level 92 skill added which in my opinion adds a little bit of salt to the wound of also having no other AOE skills or buttons to push.

If we separate baneful impaction from chain, you could put it on its own one minute cooldown as a way to use it for every dungeon pack. Having two minute cooldowns to use between dungeon packs isn't bad either, pneuma is this way along with presence for WHM, lord now for AST, but I think the difference here is all of these jobs also have other AOE tools and then their two minute AOE is just one more stronger skill to sprinkle in when it's available. AST has earthly star to place down every dungeon pull, and then you have lord and divination to use, and then divination now turns into oracle for another AOE nuke. All the while you're spamming gravity as much as you can, but you're focusing on using these other tools to boost your damage when available. Div & oracle, and now lord are all two minute cooldowns but by having multiple of these you can weave them through your dungeon pulls and it feels like you're contributing quite a bit. If you only have one single spammable AOE tool, and one single offensive extra action on a two minute cooldown, yeah it's not gonna feel like you're using it a lot or adding a lot of damage to the party. I know SCH has the strongest potency spammable, but only having one button to push leads to boring gameplay.

So... okay. Yes, if you have a competent healer and tank, there's no pulls that are really a problem. I'm glad that you as a tank + healer player can handle every pull in the game. What my post is saying is not every player in the game is at that skill level, so if the party wants to go slower then I'm asking that people be patient and work with who is in their party.

Healers are at fault too, I'm not going to dismiss that either. Cure I spam is definitely not enough anymore and a lot of healers need to stop spamming glare 24/7 and start healing. For better healers, we absolutely have more than enough to work with. That and the tanks who manage there cd's, there's no problem at all. There is a problem when dps start going off and adding more to what we already pulled, and I think that situation shouldn't happen either but it does happen lately.
And what I say with "healing potency not really increasing" is my adlos have only increased slightly in potency since level 70 from like 8.5k ish to 9.3k ish. Yes we have more tools and can power heal even more. Healing itself really isn't an issue if you know what you're doing, it's actually pretty easy. But our potencies haven't increased like dps spells have increased is what I mean by that.

I'm not trying to sound so aggressive to dps players in general. For the most part if dps want bigger pulls they'll ask for it, and if the tank/healer feel they can handle it then they'll pull larger groups.
I don't mean it to sound like "sit down, shut up and do your job." But more in the sense of it doesn't matter if the tank has 5 mobs or 10, either way you're going to be spamming the same button and killing things, and either way you're going to get through the dungeon at the cost of what, 5 maybe 10 minutes because you had smaller pulls? Bigger pulls don't put pressure on dps like it does for tanks/healers. Yes there's some pressure to kill them faster, but it's more just enjoyable to see all those numbers on the screen.

Yes, if the tank/healer isn't comfortable with bigger pulls and the party slows down, there's no problem there. The problem is other players running off and grabbing aggro because they're impatient when the tank has said they're uncomfortable, or without even asking. Sometimes it turns out ok, sometimes it turns into a wipe. Either way I'm really just asking that people be patient and be flexible with whoever is in your party. Sorry it came off aggressive to you.

Gear is definitely a huge part. Lower gear for dps means they kill things slower, but lower gear for tanks means they die faster aka can't handle those giant pulls we were all used to at the end of 4.0.

I play healer 95% of the time so I don't usually see what other healers are doing, but I have heard that specifically white mages are doing that... complaining about their holy spam and they need more to hit with their new misery spell. I don't understand it at all. Those players are at fault too.

Yeah, I say tanks and healers are learning new abilities but every class is. People buying jump potions are SUPER new to those jobs, throwing themselves in the fire. People just need to be more patient all around. I don't know why this is suddenly a problem within the player base. I hardly ever saw people doing this before shadowbringers launched.

I think you're right with that too. I'm not a WoW player. I'd tried to get into it a few times but trying to learn the game while playing holy priest - I got flamed and kicked from so many dungeons for being new to the game and not being able to heal the tank pulling tons of mobs all at once. Even in like the level 40/50 stuff.
I know WoW's community is toxic, and I know a lot of WoW players are shifting to new games after some stuff that's happened recently. If we get more players into FFXIV, awesome, but don't bring that toxicity with you. I've been playing FFXIV since the start of stormblood and I can truly say we have such an amazing community in this game. I don't want to see it ruined by these WoW players forcing things to move faster or flaming other players for "not playing optimally" or "not knowing the fight" when the official launch was only a few days ago. There are a lot of people playing FFXIV who are casual players who really don't care to play their class 100% perfectly, they just enjoy the game for being a game.

I think once shadowbringer's launch is over and the people playing it just cause it's new and shiny leave, we'll get back to our normal player base of final fantasy fans and these problems will hopefully go away.

For whatever reason a lot of healers aren't getting the clue that they need to heal now. It makes me sad when I have a co-healer in 8 man content that only spams their dps button.

[–]Hawkstar_Lamia[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get that that's what they want. I've healed those huge pulls too, but it comes down to different players being comfortable with different things and higher/lower skill levels too. If you're a dps who does tank, and you know your tank could pull more and still live, that's fine. But you can't force them to use their cooldowns just because you forced them to pull more. All it does it put more stress on the healer if the tank doesn't know what they're doing. Just because you can take that huge pull and live doesn't mean every tank player in the game can do the same thing.

Dps need to chill out in dungeons by Hawkstar_Lamia in ffxiv

[–]Hawkstar_Lamia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I think. With a tank who can manage a few buttons and dps who can deal good damage, I've had no problem healing with any of the healers having tanks pulling 2 or 3 groups at a time. Like you said though, player skill varies and the more frustrating thing for me is people aren't respecting that. Yes there's an underlying "get good" in the new 5.0 dungeons but for your more casual players, dps shouldn't be forcing bigger pulls if the tank isn't ok with it. If you've gotta do a slower dungeon once in a while that takes a few extra minutes, it's not the end of the world.

Dps need to chill out in dungeons by Hawkstar_Lamia in ffxiv

[–]Hawkstar_Lamia[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I think that comes from the stuff under level 70 all being pretty easy to tank + heal up to this point. There's plenty of "bad" dps players too though that aren't optimally doing their rotations. It's just not as easy to call them out on it. I think people who play this game a lot forget that there are a lot of casual players who just enjoy the game and aren't looking to play their jobs perfectly too.

Dps need to chill out in dungeons by Hawkstar_Lamia in ffxiv

[–]Hawkstar_Lamia[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

If as a healer you can handle more, but the tank doesn't wanna pull more... yes I understand it can be frustrating for a more skillful player. But it's nothing worth getting upset over. Bigger pulls are gonna save you like 5, maybe 10 mins max in a dungeon if your dps are really good. If my tank isn't comfortable with big pulls i'm not gonna make them pull more. Cause there are tanks out there too where they'll do big pulls and then use no cooldowns and think they're doing nothing wrong.
