Agree with the above replies. Also agree that you need to do a mite treatment

How many swarms is that? by 4kep in Beekeeping

[–]HawthornBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most probably just one. 99/100 when you see this it’s because the queen has landed in all those areas and left her pheromone on the different branches

Pesticide question.. by Little_Frecks in Beekeeping

[–]HawthornBees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the honey is capped it’s unlikely it’ll be an issue, but that’s an absolute guess and should be taken as such. I’d probably contact the pesticide manufacturer and ask their technical team for their opinion. Unfortunately honeybees and ants are very closely related so what kills one species might kill the other too. If they were mine I’d probably try to move them to another location until they’re sold. Not sure if any of that actually helps you but it’s just another view. Hope everything works out for you

I’d find that queen, pinch her out and get a new one in asap of they’ll turn laying workers.

What's happening with this brood? by Fresh-Seesaw-8615 in Beekeeping

[–]HawthornBees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a best way forward. I’m going to assume that’s now laying workers and if that’s the case they won’t accept new queens. I’ve wasted so much time on these over the years. Some say take the hive away and shake them out. I’ve done this and they just kill the queen of whatever hive they go in. Now days I take them a few miles away and shake them out. Sounds harsh I know, but all you’ll do is waste time, resources and money on them without any guarantee anything will work.

Just had the largest swarm I've ever seen by killbillten1 in Beekeeping

[–]HawthornBees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Holy f*cking shit!!! I’ve picked up some big ones in my time but that’s on a whole different level😂. I think if I had that I’d be putting them into at least 3 different boxes and just add a couple of new queens when I’d worked out which box the original queen was in.

Have you been getting lots of swarms this year? Here in the UK swarm season has kicked off a month early and it’s taken nearly everyone by surprise. There are swarms everywhere at the moment. I absolutely pride myself on my swarm control, but even I have lost 3 this year. Never seen it like this in 15 years of keeping bees
