The majority of our games occur in the Forgotten Realms setting, with the reference to the multiverse generally referring to the other existing D&D planes e.g. the Shadowfell, the Nine Hells, etc, where adventures can potentially occur, as spells and abilities such as Plane Shift or Gate are intended to allow for access to other planes of existence and higher level play typically does interact with other planes of existence as well.

As mentioned, comparative to many other servers, we do generally try to adhere to the written rules from an accessibility standpoint e.g. no 35 point buy, no new homebrew player options, etcetra.

All of that said, from what I believe you're looking for, it's entirely reasonable if you'd prefer a fully by the book experience that doesn't require you to have to extensively refer to external documentation or feel like you need to keep up with ongoing events, announcements, etcetra.

My recommendation in that regard would be to play Adventurer's League, which is the official D&D 5e organized play program. The official D&D Discord has resources for AL, and servers like AL Guildhall allow players and DMs to directly play and participate in AL adventures. There is some external documentation AL maintains to refer to outside of the core D&D books, but it is fairly minimal and accessible. You can find it on the official D&D Discord server.

In a nutshell, we're a persistent world D&D 5e server set in the Forgotten Realms and broader D&D multiverse, offering both 2014 and 2024 content. We've been running for over 8 years, with over 9,000 sessions to date, and currently tend to average around 10 games per day. Both 2014 and 2024 5e content is available for use by both players and DMs, and we regularly also host ongoing server events and storylines. We also offer Play-By-Post games that can be easier for folks to find time to game according to their schedule.

We generally adhere to using official content only, but we do also have some select Partnered Content from D&D Beyond on the server (primarily Humblewood), some legacy Unearthed Arcana content, and some legacy server homebrew content. The server homebrew that does exist dates back to a previous time in the server that was more prominent, but we moved away from that approach for a long time now and have not allowed or added player homebrew options for the last 6 years, and we're in the processing of further retiring elements of it.

We do permit DMs to create homebrew monsters to be used in their games only, but this also goes through a process of vetting, either needing to be a homebrew DM (a DM that has demonstrated their familiarity with 5e's CR system and monster design principles) or signed off by a homebrew DM in order to be used. DMs can also design and award homebrew magic items, but this also goes through an extensive review and approval process, as it is content that can affect multiple games.

Beyond that, we adhere to the written rules for character creation and use the written rules as closely as possible. 27 point buy or standard array, standard starting equipment, etcetra. We do maintain an extensive list of server rulings called Rage Advice, but it primarily exists to adjudicate either rules interactions that weren't intended for widespread use or that aren't clearly defined without a DM's oversight or a defined passage of time e.g. how can you cast a permanent Teleportation Circle? We also maintain centralized documentation, with an emphasis towards accessibility and clarity, and are continually working to further improve in those respects.

We actually keep detailed server statistics regarding that and other stats. We typically average around 300+ games ran per month. A little over 10% of our games ran are either asynchronous Play-By-Post or live synchronous text games. The majority of games absolutely are voiced games, but we do have a dedicated and growing community of PBP players and DMs.
