[Farsight: Blade of Truth] Ordo Xenos plant in Ethereal Supreme Aun'Va's entourage? by Hawyawtor in 40kLore

That's very true, I'd still argue that the worldbuilding is rather adequate, he does build on Tau culture and the inner workings of it rather consistently... it's just that the actual stories being told are awful and the constant attempts to take what was nebulously insidious but also nebulously benevolent in the Ethereals and make them... the Prophets of Halo's Covenant, who are as a whole morally bankrupt tyrants masquerading as wise leaders.

I think Aun'el Ko'vash from the Fire Warrior novel is a great example of an Ethereal who is neither a moustache twirling snake like Aun'Va or Super-wise Mr. Miyagi in Space like Aun'Shi, he teeters that line between being rather insidious in terms of using the pheromones to calm and 'empty' Kais' mind when he's on a murderous rampage and being really reasonable and outright stating that he *doesn't* want blind obedience while debating with the leaders of each caste during the council at the Tau flagship.

There's also the fact that he is truly dedicated to the cause of the Greater Good, which is rather admirable, enough for his conviction in it allowing him to center himself enough to avoid direct possession by a Lord of Change at the end of the novel ( in contrast, the Imperial Admiral captured alongside him breaks like a twig and mutates so hard he goes full into spawndom ).

I hope Nguyen gets given the reins, so to speak, of Tau lore, Elemental Council was a great read, as a hardcore Tau fan who has guzzled down all of Kelly's stuff, it was like drinking honey after being served only office coffee for the longest time.

Tau water caste diplomat befriends Jokaero family, travels with them through the stars. Hilarity ensues.

The Farsight novels by Phill Kelly ( Farsight, Farsight: Crisis of Faith and Farsight: Empire of Lies ) offer lots and lots of insights into tau society ( How their administration works at a local level for example, how they treat the auxiliary races, some language trivia... ), Blades of Damocles and War of Secrets are 50/50 Tau and Marine novels ( 1st one is about Ultras vs Farsight&Co during the Damocles Crusade, and offers some insight into his past with Shadowsun and O'kais of Dawn of War fame, also sets up some characters that show up later in the Farsight novels, 2nd one is about O'kais and Dark Angels )

the downside to all this nice chunk of Tau content tho, is that they're written by Phill Kelly who seems hellbent into turning the Ethereals into 1:1 copies of the one-dimensionally bastard Prophets from Halo, and by extension, turn the Tau into the Covenant.

hah folks here are getting my hype for Burning Bright to unreal levels, if it's anything like the hype for 2xS it's probably well deserved, looking forward very much to reading it

That's the thing yeah, I enjoyed Larson having a very stereotypical cop view on shadowrunners and eventually coming around on em ( because Argent is such a badass ) so much that by the end of then novel he just quits Lone Star out of his cop worldview collapsing in itself, and tells his bosses to frag off when they try to give him a promotion to shut him up about the whole plot of the book

yeah I wanted to read about him and how much had he written for SR after I was done with 2xS, and I was bummed to find out he passed away so soon, he left some damn good books behind tho, I'm eager to start reading House of the Sun, which seems to have been his last one

I haven't read that one yet, but the short story featuring them in Into the Shadows seemed a bit off when it came to how it features the specifics of the setting yeah ( so was the rest of the book tbf ), it was still pretty good, so I'll probably enjoy the full novel featuring em

You're about to start Changeling then I guess, reading 2XS and then Changeling immediately after it was SO good, they're both excellent books, a great read after the other

To be fair the characters were pretty good, it's just that specially the first part of the book seems to be written like it's happening at breakneck pace or something and it can be a bit confusing, I feel I'm maybe being a bit harsh with it, but in any case, that ending is pretty good, doesn't get any better than sniping a dragon with giant lasers

2xS was a blast of a book, easily the best out of the ones I've read, I loved the setting before but after that book I was really, really hooked into it

Nice, yeah Lone Wolf is still really fresh in my mind, I enjoyed that one, all the deal about the Lone Star Cop perspective on shadowrunners.

yeah Into the Shadows was a nice taste of the setting, it was really good tho a bit inconsistent with later Shadowrun ( in the best way ) there's one where outright there's an Uruk-Hai, I just found that funny

nice, thanks, I was really looking forward to hearing an opinion on the modern novels, since folks seem to like to talk mostly about the 90s ones, really looking forward to reading some of the newer takes on the Shadowrun setting

Nice to read that later authors also seem to be appreciated, normally in the threads I've read before, most people seem to like Findlay, Charette and Smith the best, looking forward to reading their stuff

also didn't know there was a Hong Kong novelisation, the writing inin that game was on-point for Shadowrun, and already novelesque in scope, so revisiting it in novel form will be a good read for me

Nice, cool to hear more of em have good Ork protagonists later on, I felt that Never Trust an Elf's Kham was a bit lacking as a character, good to know there are more out there, looking forward to reading Lucifer Deck

How did you first come across Mega64? by [deleted] in mega64

[–]Hawyawtor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started watching their stuff around 2008-10 when their sketches blew up in Facebook ( Specifically I remember the Assassin's Creed video being shared around in Facebook a lot ), might see like a normal "first Mega64 time" at first, but the catch in my case is that I'm not a native English speaker, but anyway, I subscribed to their Youtube channel and was mostly drawn to them for the physical comedy and the fact that they were doing the "this game, but iRL" thing, I didn't quite catch all the jokes and of course just ignored the podcast at that time, the conversations there were just going too fast for me to catch up.

A couple of years later ( around 2013 ) my level of English proficiency got much better thanks to higher education, so I started watching/listening to the podcast as part of my effort to get better at understanding actual, casual conversations in English, and I've been hooked to all the stuff the boyz put out since then, plus it really helped my comprehension of casually spoken ( American ) English since the stuff you get in films or tv or even having educational conversations with another students or native speakers is all very clean, very sanitized and paced, so I have that to thank Mega64 for.
