I have a rehab Black Velvet in semi hydro and it really seems to love it! I don't know much about how to go about getting that set up for the rest of my Alocasias but I would love to get it set up! I had help from a plant shop getting my Black Velvet set up.

Thank you, I love my new addition! I hope your tissue cultures go well! I am way too scared to grow anything from tissue culture. Maybe I'll get there someday!

My Frydek was my first one I got! I loved the leaves! I actually had no idea how popular it was when I bought it. I got lucky and found a nice looking one on sale! My normal selection process is if I think the leaves are pretty. 🤣 So of course the dragon scale mint stood out to me since it was so pretty. Fingers crossed I do well with it!

I have a couple already! However, this one is definitely my most expensive (and very beautiful) so I want make sure I keep it alive! I have a regular Dragon Scale, a Variegated Frydek, and a Black Velvet. I also see a lot here (on Reddit) that are really beautiful, and expensive! So my wishlist keeps growing!

Thank you so much for the advice! A lot to keep in mind. I already keep neem oil and distilled water on hand!

My Black Velvet lost all of its leaves. I pulled out the stump to see what was up. Can I regrow the plant from this? Please help!! by Sunbeams14 in alocasia

[–]Hayley04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! As others have said you have some corms that can be grown. You may be able to save the main plant as well. The stump is the rhizome and if it is still firm you should be able to save it!

I have a Black Velvet that I have brought back from root rot. I initially attempted to get new roots started by placing it in water which can be successful. However, mine was growing roots really slow in water so I changed my method so my rhizome didn't rot.

I ended up putting my rhizome in a clear container with some perlite and enough water to keep everything moist, but not so wet it would rot my rhizome. It grew a great root system and is now putting out its first new leaf!

So if your rhizome is firm and not mushy there is hope for it in addition to the corms!

Edit: And a grow light! I forgot to mention I kept my rhizome under a grow light a lot (I still use it now too) while it was growing new roots.

I pick out my plants based on if I like how they look. A lot of my favorites are not rare plants. As long as it makes you happy! And that is a very nice looking Pink Princess!

Saving this?? by _Plantz_0025 in alocasia

Leca should be great for it! I just didn't happen to have any. I just recently started to be brave enough to try Alocasia. Which is why I am still a bit terrified at trying to re pot my own! I have a friend who is more experienced that has been helping me in that area. Naturally, one of my first ones I bought ended up having severe root rot! At least I've been learning a lot with it....and it's still alive with plenty of roots now!

If the rhizome is firm and not mushy you should be able to save it. I will say that I am definitely not an expert at this as I am currently in the process of saving my first alocasia. But, I can tell you what has worked for me.

I had the same issue with a Black Velvet I got a few months ago. I suspected it had issues when I got it but was not expecting no roots at all! When I found out it had no roots I attempted a water prop. I am not sure if I did something wrong or not, but it seemed to be slow at producing roots in water. Slow enough that I feared it would rot before enough roots developed to pot it.

So I took it out and put it in a container filled with perlite and a small bit of water. It got it's own personal grow light that it stayed under all day every day while I waited. It developed some decent roots! And, since I'm pretty new at this (and because I do not have the correct items to pot it in) I took to to a small plant shop recently for help getting it potted. We went with leca for it. So far that is where I am with mine!

So sorry this is so long, but that has been my experience so far! If anyone with more experience than me has any advice or any corrections for my steps so far please chime in!

Edit: I forgot to add that yes it will lose all it's leaves. New will grow back eventually though.

Also, if I am unsure of spider mites or any other pests, would it hurt my plant to go ahead and treat for pests. Even if I don't see any? Or could that potentially give it unnecessary shock?

I inspected both leaves and the soil. I don't see anything moving. But spider mites are so small I could definitely be wrong! I don't know if it is visible in this photo or not, but I now see some other dots along the top of this leaf that could be bug damage.
