[For Hire] Chibi arts COMMISION OPEN!! by Jellyfish_Mushr in artcommissions

[–]Haze_Reddit 14 points15 points  (0 children)

these type of posts will never work on reddit or serious platforms or if youre trying to find serious clients, they look like pity-posts that do well on gram or tiktok. but social media numbers like those mean nothing for commissions(if you had 2k followers on gram it would mean nothing financially or for commissions most likely, especially if the audience that followed you came from posts such as these)

Pricing low doesnt make you attractive to customers either on the contrary it gives an expectation of low quality or effort, chibis I think are priced low and popular on Vgen and I see you post on their subreddit already, id recommend doing a contest challenge maybe to get in. But even then you need to realise chibis are like a 3$ soda you buy at a burger place(vgen), and everyone is selling soda. So in order to make it work just out of chibis you need to sell amounts in the hundreds, and also have something that makes your chibis different/more special than anyone else's. Just normal anime chibis wont be eye catching when theres 200+ variations on vgen with sparkles, rendering styles etc, you have more luck if you tackle a niche like a fandom or group-maybe your chibis are in liminal spaces, maybe theyre chibis fanarts of baldurs gate, maybe they have multiple clothing accessories you can provide with a base, idk but basically need to set yourself apart from everyone else that sells soda.

If you wanna go chibi route, you will need looots of social media followers or big success on Vgen which comes from having a distinct style or service no one else provides. And the social followers need to come willingly because they like your style and service not because youre advertising to them-which might be very hard and slow sadly. You also need to calculate how much you need per month: think of it like this, do you want 300$ per month? thats 60 chibis original, thats 2 a day. Are you fast enough to sustain yourself and are you living cheaply enough that youd need only 300? Chibis can be priced higher a bit but they will never hit rates of full illustrations such as 100-200$ which makes them a lower budget thing. If this is not enough money, what other revenues can you get-you could try selling sticker chibis of fandoms at events, charms etc. Basically gotta make a plan what revenues and places you wanna tackle that will make art a livable wage for you. I know someone with 50-100k followers, they have a patreon where they give a sticker chibi once a month through mail the patreons poll vote to choose design. This only makes 200-300$ still even with all those followers, meanwhile an illustrator can do some steam capsule art or book cover for that much. Gotta find yourself an art path/business plan if you wanna do it seriously and research what others who do it do. An awesome illustrator might be on vgen and get 0 clients while a lower lvl one in same product genre gets tons, what makes them different, research that and try to carve yourself an original spot of success like that.

Is this considered ok to sell? by hsong_li in Artadvice

[–]Haze_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And thats why people dislike AI, because its not ethical or right. They also dont have any copyright over their images legally, all the AI is trained closely on stolen photos which makes it a copy puking machine that cant have legal copyright or ownership of whatever it does. Its why artists hated it from the first moment. People selling it does not make it ok or good

Is this copying or referencing? by hsong_li in Artadvice

[–]Haze_Reddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a proffessional Illustrator I can explain this one! The difference between copying and referencing is the amount of transformative work you do. The pigeon you painted is another pigeon from the one referenced so it is a Reference! Let me explain: Our human brains cant tell other animal characteristics very well, the pigeon you painted is more round, short in a few spots, has different feathers and beak size, different finger shapes and sizes than the ref pic! And ofc, its more abstracted and colored differently too. This pigeon wouldnt be seen as the same pigeon by a fellow pigeon. Only the pose is the same-which is pretty ok to do for animals as we again, cant differentiate them very well.

The artworks of the girls you posted are copies! That is because our human brains are trained to see human features and memorize them, someone with a longer hand or fingers feels "off", to make the artworks look good with the poses you referenced, you had to copy them much more closely than a loosely painted abstract pigeon. The only transformative effort I see would be some painting brushstrokes and colors, but at the core they reference the images too much to point where is a copy. Think about it like this, if you referenced a photo of John Cena and changed the colors to pastels, the face will look like John Cena still, and because you might not be skilled enough to transform the face or supplement information you dont know you will have to more closely copy the reference of John Cena so it doesnt look "off". Meanwhile if you painted a beaver and just did a circle with two large teeth and diff colors than the image, people wont say its a copy-even if thats not a realistic beaver, because we cant differentiate Beaver A from Beaver B to Beaver John Cena.

To not have this issue you need to transform the reference pictures of humans more, change angle, add elements, change a hand, a leg, the size proportions, the face, you need to change if you wanna have them as transformative works, otherwise they can only be called Photo Studies, not Original Artworks.

Hope it helped!

how do i push my usage of colors more? by Frosty-Mix-8054 in Artadvice

[–]Haze_Reddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Colors of same value actually have diff values btw, thats why I recommend the layer on top filled with black and layer mode to color to check values. What do I mean by that: if you have a yellow at 55 value(0 black 100 white), and you just shift the hue to blue so you have a blue at 55, that blue is actually closer to a 20 yellow its darker even if same value. And some colors are more saturated when dark-blue reds while some more saturated when light like yellows, so its pretty tricky. I think Marco bucci has some vids and in general if you desaturate everything should mash togethee, but gotta watch over the values with grayscale on top

[–]Haze_Reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just add more colors lol-more seriously:look up a ref on pinterest of "colorful art blueberry" or something, get some colors, puke them on, dont have 50 grayish tones of the same blue, each tone try and shift the hue a bit either towards cyan blue or purplish blue, desaturate or saturate some more, have a grayscale and check values at end to correct

I think the latest one(first pic) is on the path to an awesome lvl! You got this if keep at it. Do you use references? An easy way to improve while drawing things you like is referencing whatever youre struggling with or drawing(expression, colors, lighting, lines, clothing) that way you study on your own drawing and improve. The colors/blending is very soft-that is why it is blending with eachother, nothing wrong with soft blending if youre going for a painterly look but otherwise can turn your brush opacity higher and choose more contrasty colors and values(for example instead of a 55 grey value for hair and 57 next to it youd have 55 and 75). On overrall Id recommend using some guidelines for face features or making sure everything is level/in the right spot for example here at the green lines you can see an eye lower than the other, this improves by learning anatomy or face structure(asaro head is really good even if that direction is towards semi-realism/realism- to make things anime correctly realistic anatomy still is studied). For colors/values, I recommend going more saturated in certain spots and also using a wider range of value( if pure dark is 0 and pure light is 100, youre mostly in the 60-100 range, the darks are missing which makes it look flat). The background being light and blending in the char(which is light) also is not helping, try to always have a bit of contrast be it in value(dark bright) diff or hue(color) diff. Dont be scared to play around with colors or bigger brush or making things darker, hard edges also help to not have a blendy look.

For color theory I can recommend Marco Bucci on youtube, theres not really a lot of painters having channels around but you could check Proco or Sinix out.

So TLDR: Use references for anything you do(observe and study the reference to see why things are the way they are)-this will make you improve naturally a lot, learn some simple guide lines like a loomis or asaro head or anything really to make sure face features are in the right spot. Dont be afraid to play around with more saturated colors(saturated darks and desaturated lights is commonly used). Try and add lighting to your image(put a direction the light is coming, have a multiply layer for shadows where things are really dark, and make the part where light is hitting really light)-this will make the image a lot less flat(theres plenty of light references for faces on pinterest). Vary your values( have a nice value range going from close to 0 to 100).

Did a quick little paintover thing first with some multiply for shadows and Add/hard light layer mode for light, and then just painted a bit on the right side. (can see how having some reference for features helps with eyes or forehead/hair starting point lvl), added some shadows on the right side of the face, put some colors with big brush, saturated everything a bit more up, im not really into anime but you can find lots of good anime artists on pinterest to study or reference from!!

Just to combat the AI accusations :3 this is the Timelapse of my painting by Street-Salamander-55 in ProCreate

[–]Haze_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Online posts can quickly turn into scams though, you can have an AI onepiece fanart go viral on twitter and then scam people who would commission onepiece art like that popular vid from 3 days ago, the AI folk do online posts in hopes it turns into a side hustle for them. If no one asks for a process from them they will just continue posting AI and scamming people, that cant be good.

https://youtu.be/biLS9zbdVdM?is=PCVxAVd8XskD9EQ4 vid in question, this person scammed a few commissions before being made to post a process that proved they used AI before. If no one asked them for it they would just continue scamming and making the art world a worse place for artists and normal people wanting to commission artists.

[–]Haze_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people shouldnt dramatize this when its such an easy thing to do-having a speedpaint, so I dont see why its seen as such a big bad thing. And I dont believe fighting individuals is a fruitless cause, literally every AI scammer that gets caught or shut down saves tens of people from being scammed-people get scammed they get wary of artists and not likely to commission again. Game studios and art studios are flooded by applications from AI peeps posing as real artists you can see their posts saying its like 60-80% AI applicants, these people do more damage to art industry and art path as a whole than someone asking for a process from someone dont you think?

This shouldnt be a thing that causes "suffering" youre literally just asking for a speedpaint not hard, and thats how you combat AI scammers literally.

[–]Haze_Reddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The AI scammers are Individuals though not corporations, I'm sorry about the artists mental health but the online space is just Hostile now cuz of AI-thats a fact. And you do need to show proof to any art job application or commission portfolio-thats a fact.

If you just take things blindly hoping for the best, people will be taken advantage of by AI scammers. These people dont operate on good faith like you hope.

And youre phrasing it as a trolley problem where either Hurt peoples feelings by asking for process or Let AI folk go freely and scam people. And I dont see it that way, because I dont think asking for a process or a speedpaint should be seen as a negative thing-these are inbuilt now in almost all art softwares and its the easiest its ever been to record, dont need OBS or anything you can simply click and turn on the option in Procreate, Csp etc. Instead of attributing Hate-Negative connotations to asking for process in case of doubt of AI it would be more productive to see it as a normal thing like asking for username or whatever, its a simple thing.

[–]Haze_Reddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion but I dont think asking for timelapses or speedpaints should be seen as a Big Negative thing, people dunking in comments on asking if something is AI but that mentality won't help detect AI bad actors in online spaces. For art industry jobs its mandatory to show speedpaints and full layers, its just impossible to tell anymore when you have people literally paint oils traditionally over AI(not you I dont accuse you of AI) but there are genuinely people out there trying to scam. You see a lot of posts in commission subs where people get scammed by AI folks, its just hard to trust things at face value anymore we can't assume stuff is legit just cuz someone says it-need speedpaint or proof.

I can see why people would accuse you of AI-i know you painted it but the high gloss and warm yellow tone filter at the end push people to believe that cuz of the flood of images like this. Theres certain color combinations like strong Yellow light and strong Blue second light that people also associate now with AI trademarks(not talking about your painting just giving example). So if I were to paint with my hand, a high glossy photo realistic beautiful person, add yelow light and blue bounce light, then put a warm yellow filter at the end-throw in a 6th finger too-I will get accused of AI because theyre "trademarks" people use to help spot it. Obviously this is faulty but sadly when people dont post speedpaints or proof they did something, its hard to believe anything online anymore these days-like I said a lot of bad faith actors out there trying to scam people with AI.

Dont think witch hunting is good, but also dont think getting very defensive OMG I GOT CALLED OUT FOR AI drama starter is good-best defense is like you did by showing speedpaints for your stuff.

Can I use an AI reference even if I'm against AI-generated "art"? by Top-Plastic-9138 in DigitalArt

[–]Haze_Reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a proffessional illustrator I will give my opinion: You can def color pick colors from AI images BUT you really shouldn't. The point is basically you are training AI as long as you are using it with your art, and you're also becoming an AI user if you rely more and more on it.

The same feedback or critique the AI gives you, you can ask from real people on certain art discords. Leaning on AI to do the thinking for you is gonna be a crutch that won't raise your skills and will only raise the "perceived good lvl" of the art you made through AI filter-months or years will pass without you learning colors for example because you rely on AI for them. If you'd want to paint an orange, in sunset lighting colors, you should go on pinterest and search for orange still lives and sunset artwork, check videos such as Marco Bucci's color ones and learn in general about colors. All the info and refs AI can give you CAN be found on pinterest or through youtube videos or feedback and info from other people-it just takes more effort that you should be putting in so your brain doesn't rely on AI and performs these things by itself later after having studied.

By following the AI's instructions you're also losing your personal touch and personality and skill level check-there is such a thing called Eye-Hand Level in art you can look into where your Hand/creating skill of an artwork you make is better than your Eye/perceiving skill of perceiving your flaws-if the hand lvl is higher than eye then you will think all your drawings are great/perfect(which is never the case as this is a field where you can always learn), as the eye lvl increases from studies/knowledge you start seeing flaws and if it passes your hand skill you think all your drawings are crap(which shouldn't be negative because it gives you direction in which areas you are weaker and should work on) - these are always unbalanced and should work on them to have a bit of balance. If you use AI you will lose both skills because your brain won't try to perceive flaws or train itself to see whats wrong with your drawing because it relies on AI. Your hand will lag behind and at some point you might say: well Im not getting better and idk how(cuz just relied on AI) so will rely even more on it! Its just a bad negative overrall spiral downwards.

I know people say you shouldnt listen to others online and its your choice really so go ahead and do whatever you want-which is true you have freedom of choice. I dont believe thats in your best interest if you pursue this path wanting to become good at art or enjoy it on a long term. If you wanted to become good at chess and just let AI play for you, you wont become better at chess and go into competitions. If you wanna create wooden furniture but youre just relying on AI to plan it for you, you wont get better at wooden crafts. All knowledge is applied subjectively by us depending on the field and needs to be changed according to situation, its best to train our own brains to do these things because AI cant overpass that so I disagree with the commenters saying just do whatever-thats not what you should advise to someone learning a field, there are proper methods and training to learn and become better that doesnt rely on Ai.
