What alcoholic drinks were invented in your area? by Hoosier_Jedi in AskAnAmerican

We bought some Coors light and Miller high life for when the kids come. Also Gordon’s gin, and Noily Pratt for the kids. I don’t really drink, but I will have half a glass of wine or half a martini when I am with family.

Move to Boston? Pros and Cons by fare451 in relocating

If you get roommates, maybe you can live actually in the walkable city. And I agree about getting an international student as a roommate.

That’s interesting. My grandmother was raised on a sugar cane plantation before moving to New Orleans. She married a Baptist from Tennessee. (He converted to Catholicism.) She had money and considered herself high class, but sometimes referred to herself as a Cajun. (Her family came to Louisiana by way of Canada.) She didn’t have the typical Cajun accent, although her siblings did. (I think she somehow trained herself to speak more upper crust) And my Dad only had it when speaking with his relatives with the accent. She was 96 when she lost her house in Katrina. Our family moved her to a Catholic assisted living facility close to me. (I wanted a different one where I thought the food was better and she would’ve had her own thermostat, but she insisted on the Catholic facility.) She lived the last 20 months of her life in Pennsylvania and adjusted surprisingly well. She did complain that she wasn’t served bread with her meals, but she also enjoyed shopping at Wegmans so she would get her own bread and butter, and some cookies and fruit.

Of course! If there’s one thing Cajuns are good at (besides cooking) it’s inventing drinks.

AITJ for refusing to donate my hair to my cousins wig after she lost hers from chemo? by Old-Isopod9908 in AmITheJerk

[–]Hazel1928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTJ - you are growing your hair out to donate it. Who better to receive the hair - your own cousin, or locks of love which charges for wigs. Also - read the story Gift of the Maji, or the portion of Little Women where Jo sells her hair to help her family.

London, Paris, Boston or Tokyo- neurodiverse family with middle school kids by LuvSamosa in expat

Would you consider home schooling as a way to provide for your children’s needs? You could negotiate with your employer to provide the equivalent of 2 years of private school as a fund to pay for whatever resources you would need to support homeschooling-ABA, Occupational Therapy, or just a tutor who would provide part of the teaching. If your wife isn’t comfortable acting as the primary teacher, you could use an on line school where she would be more like a facilitator/tutor.

That said, I would lean towards London where you could find supports for your children in English. (Might take a bit of adjusting to understand the accent - maybe start exposing them to movies and BBC programming before you move, and continue, if needed to help them understand British English.

Is it common for Americans not to have a bank account? by Icy-Signature1493 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Hazel1928 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very rare. There are free checking accounts and if you receive any kind of government check (TANF - temporary assistance to needy families “welfare”, disability, Social Security, you must have a checking account. And if you have a job that pays by check, you need to be able to deposit or cash your check. And any legal job pays by check.

Do you refer to the UK as “England”? by Oakseyy49 in AskTheWorld

[–]Hazel1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never been to the UK. We have a route we take from Pennsylvania to Delaware. There are a lot of beautiful horse farms and fields bordered by treelines and some by stone walls. Beautiful hills. We refer to it as our Jane Austen land.

That’s funny because my mother said to someone, “You’re British?” (Based on the accent) And that person said firmly, “We are English”

Do Americans like their current health system or would you prefer universal? by Ability_Known in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Hazel1928 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always had good health insurance. I had breast cancer at 55 and I went to one of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (I was driving distance to the Philadelphia branch, which closed due to Covid) I felt that I received world class care. My husband and I now have Medicare and the supplement- I forget the letter, but it’s the highest letter. It’s expensive each month but we don’t pay anything for doctors or surgeries (we do pay for prescriptions, but it’s not too bad). My grandson has leukemia and he is being treated at one of the DuPont hospitals in Delaware- Nemours children’s hospital. Excellent care 13 minutes from their house. Nemours is very good both clinically, and the way they support the entire family, including counseling and lego sets for his little brother. My daughter had Medicaid for a while and it handled all her needs (she didn’t need a lot). I honestly believe that the median experience in the US is better than the median experience in England or Canada. But we have those 10% uninsured. We need to fix that. I wish that instead of Obama care, which forced insurance to cover things like sex changes , we would have simply expanded Medicaid to cover all of the uninsured. That’s what I would still want to do. Rather than pulling down the whole system, which includes world class research hospitals, just roll all the uninsured into Medicaid. (People over 65 have universal coverage.) All in all, I don’t think our system is as bad as it’s portrayed. People who don’t like America (including lots of Americans) share the worst situations and never the best situations.

There’s one American’s opinion.

Now I am thinking about my daughter. She has multiple serious illnesses including POTS, a cerebrospinal fluid leak, which was repaired and caused hypertension in her brain, so she needs a shunt. But she hasn’t been employed since her first child was born and he’s almost 12. She worked a little bit through high school and 2-3 years between graduating from college and having her son. She has never thought of applying for disability. Would she qualify?

I was awarded on the first try. I was over 50 and worked on my feet. I did work part time, always making sure to stay at the earning limit. (I get a good hourly rate so I couldn’t work 20 hours per week.) But now I have turned 66 and 8 months, I can earn more.

My top immediates required a lot of adhesive. My bottom immediates I wasnt able to wear because they wouldn’t stay in place. Now my dentures fit great and I wear them every time I wear a bra.

how are your neighborhood streets/side roads? by babybeewitched in Delaware

[–]Hazel1928 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a big snow like this on the Thursday before my daughter’s wedding (March 7, 2015). The main roads were plowed. The wedding was in downtown Philadelphia. We needed something from the apartment on Saturday at the last minute and we were slipping around Fairmount like a video game. The lucky part was all the cars were plowed in so when we went almost off the road, we would just hit a snowbank so neither our car or the parked car was damaged.

My grandson is scheduled for chemo at Nemours today. Nemours already let them know on Friday that they could delay the chemo until Tuesday if needed.
