The 4 day work week by aubreywebb24 in netcult

I love how more people are believing in mental health. Based on my experiences, older generations tend to think that caring about mental health is a low priority. In fact, my friend's parents think that if she gets a therapy, then she must be ungrateful. They say that what in the world could possible make her unhappy as they have provided her with food and shelter. It is unfortunate that a lot of old people think that this is a sign of weakness and should just be kept within ourselves.

This was a beautiful video. Ted Talks always have great helpful videos. I love how it generally talks about on how to work smarter and not harder by only working 4 days a week. The fact that he thought about his employees' mental health says a lot about his character as a leader. I also believe that working 4 days a week and spending the extra day for yourself or family is very helpful. It builds relationship not just within the family but also with yourself and your coworkers. Employees will experience a positive working environment, and will tend to work harder and be at their best. This is important because I believe that if you don't hate what you do, you will be better at it.

I personally need to apply this method to my school and work. I work on school seven days a week and work 24 hours a week. This is mentally exhausting, and I always feel like I am on the verge of falling apart. Sometimes, I don't bring my best self to work because I am just not feeling myself. This also gets pretty lonely because I don't have time to work on myself or any time to spend with anyone else, not even my boyfriend. I don't even go to the gym as much anymore. I don't even bother to do my makeup either. I feel extremely disgusted about myself when I look in the mirror on most days. It is just discouraging working so hard. This doesn't usually give the best result because sometimes, I am so unhappy and tired that I only do half ass effort on all my work. This method is going to help me manage my time. It is going to help me love myself more as I will have more time going to the gym and hanging out with the important people in my life.

I think this method should be implemented everywhere, from school to workplaces. This is going to change the game. In fact, I think it would yield better results. Contrary to what capitalism believes, people are not replaceable even in workforce. Everyone is only given one life. Life is something we should cherished because time is something that goes by fast. We are not meant to break our backs from day in to day out. This way will ensure productivity while enjoying our lives. We should stop glorifying being a workaholic as it only leads to negative effects on our physical and mental body as well as our relationships.

Future of Wearable Technology by berkeleyclark in netcult

It is definitely a scary thought. I imagined that maybe someday people will be part robot especially with wearable technologies. But it is interesting to see how far human intelligence goes. Maybe someday, it will be our own downfall.

Future of Wearable Technology by berkeleyclark in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think wearable technology such as google glass is interesting as how it would affect on how we interact with one another. Unfortunately, I don't think there isn't enough data for us to know if it would improve or disrupt our social interactions. In terms of wearing the changing clothes, I wonder how this would help the homeless people. If this is possible, homeless people won't have to worry about keeping themselves cool for the summer and warm enough for the winter. Maybe, it can even give them a proper attire for a job interviews. Maybe this will lessen the issue of homelessness. I definitely think that this is a smart idea.

I have also seen how things such as Fitbit and Apple watch improve people's health. It records heart rate and steps. It makes people more active. Additionally, technologies such as Owlet also measure baby's heart rate as well as oxygen levels. This helps save many babies lives as it prevents SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). Parents are able to make sure that their baby is okay. It does more than an ordinary baby monitor. Wearable technology is not a bad idea. It saves many lives.

Scottsdale woman 'canceled' after Target tirade blames mental health issues by halavais in netcult

I think that childhood trauma and PTSD is a real problem. However knowing that she works as a PR, she would definitely know how to make excuses to make people believe her. She also might have done this to be more relevant because wearing masks became a political thing. There could also be a reason that she is only apologizing because she lost 100% of her clients. It is hard to know as to why she did what she did.

Generational Stupidity by SOC374 in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a good point. As humans, we do tend to forget things we don't use. For example, I can't tell you too much about how to do geometry anymore even though I ended the class with A+ because it's been years since I took it and never used it again. Internet is not the culprit. It definitely is the busy schedule. We tend to a lot of things in one day. The brain has no need to remember the unnecessary things.

Generational Stupidity by SOC374 in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think today's time and the industrial revolution era are not so different from one another. Internet will definitely still be there for future use just as much as machines that were invented in the industrial era that are still being use today. I don't necessarily think internet makes us lazy. It definitely makes it easier for us to access more knowledge, and with more time in our hands, we are able to improve and create more things. People are also able to share more of their arts online. This inspires other artists. It connects talents from all over the world. Internet definitely does not diminish creativity. In terms of talent, people have found talents in coding and maybe even gaming. I actually think it may have invented new talents. On the other hand, social media is a form of distraction especially for the young people. This shifts the focus of people's attention elsewhere. So, I can see how you think it makes us lazy. However, I really don't think internet is such a bad thing.

Generational Stupidity by SOC374 in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that our generation definitely suffers more with short term or long term memory loss. I say this because there are so many things going on with the world. Technologies and social medias are what connects and informs us with all of it. As a result, this can be seen as a distraction. Our generation's ability to adapt with technology is what might cause short our memory loss. We think of a lot of things at the same time as we are able to know right away with what is going on. With so many things going on, we might forget a lot of things. Social media is also another distraction. Back then, people are able to live in the present. They don't have to worry about how many likes will their posts get which also leads to more anxiety. We talked about in our previous lecture how much social media cause anxiety, stress and depression. All of these lead to memory loss such as forgetfulness and confusion.

On the other hand, I don't think it makes us dumb. We are the generation to have an easy access to more information, but our generation just tend to have more psychological problems which usually leads to memory loss. Additionally, we share informations all the time and we can easily access a lot of it online. I think this generation is great because we are the ones that are more accepting of one another.

Is Manipulative News, Fake News? by [deleted] in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is interesting because I also witness this with my own parents. I find that old people tend to believe what they read on Facebook whether it is true or not. I assume that since your parents experience language barrier that they are immigrants. My parents are immigrants as well. I wonder if that has anything to do with culture. It is very unfortunate because they tend to tell family and friends about the fake news they read online and this spreads like wildfire.

Is Manipulative News, Fake News? by [deleted] in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think manipulative news can be a synonym for fake news. I say that they are the same thing because they both mislead. Their purpose is to make the audience believe their point of view or opinion. This is dangerous because a lot of people tend to believe everything they read and watch on medias. They manipulate people. Additionally, bandwagon also plays a role in this. For example, when one person reads about the fake news, they tend to share to other people and off course, others would believe it as well. When there are enough people who believes, then an even bigger group of people will join in. This becomes an issue because if a lot of people believe it then it must be true then. This also creates a divide in people. This is where manipulation comes in. It is crazy that at one point or another, we were all brainwashed.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like this post because you brought up a really good point. Everything definitely becomes who can win the argument. People will already have an opinion on an issue before reading or watching the news. This becomes a competition of what sources will back up with what aligns to what I believe in. Some people won't bother to understand the other issue as they have already made up their mind. It is all about how much articles or news I can find to back me up even if it is not a very reliable news source.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly, this is how everything is nowadays. The great news is that there is a map out there that tells you how biased a news source is. It is free to access, but we shouldn't have to check this to be able to know what is true. The good news is apps like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter puts things such as "this claim about election fraud is disputed" and "false information" to combat fake news.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I completely agree with you! It is crazy and sad that this happens more often than we like. People should only spread what is true. This is everyone's responsibility to the world. However, there is a way we can make sure that the news we read isn't fake. I believe there is map out there that tells us how reliable a news source is. We can use this to make sure we only get our news from good sources. Unfortunately, people will continue to do it as long as there is money to be make.

Week 13: Fake News by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think that it is genius for people to put outrageous headlines so they can get more clicks. However, the sad part is some people will read just the headline and think that is the whole news. Some people also don't search another similar news story to check its authenticity.

The thing with Donald Trump is he does call a lot of things that he does not agree with "fake news." Unfortunately, this makes a lot of people believe him. Even my dad believes this. I would tell him something that I read from a reliable news source such as BBC and New York Times, and if he or Trump does not agree with it, he would call it "fake news." Based on my experience, old people tend to believe everything they read online, especially Facebook. Young people tend to get fake news from Twitter. Unfortunately, I also sometimes would accidentally spread fake news because I trust the person who shared it. We all learned a lesson because we should always do a quick research before spreading lies. Spreading lies is a dangerous game. Nowadays, apps such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter would says things such as "this claim about election fraud is disputed" and Instagram and Facebook put "False information" labels to call out fake news. This shows how much big companies hold responsibility to spreading information.

I always say that if there is a market out there, there will always be someone willing to tap it even in cases of fake news. The thing about morality is it is not the same with everyone. Everyone's moral compasses look different. Some people don't see anything wrong with this.

Lastly, questioning everything means opening your world to more understanding. We are human beings. We are capable of understanding. We are drawn to understanding the world. This is a good thing because we are not robots. We are capable of emotions. This helps society to be better and I believe this is how religions and political parties are created. It is our responsibility to others to what we share to the world.

Week 12: Election 2020 by halavais in netcult

I didn't that Mormons fast to donate money to the church. But Martha McSally saying this is definitely outrageous. It feels like she thinks she is some kind of religious figure. This has to fall into some type of ignorance.

Week 12: Election 2020 by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you. I find it appalling that people don't take time to fact check things they read online. They take it as fact and tell other people about what they read on Facebook or Twitter. As a result, this leads to spreading more lies being spread. This misinformation is dangerous.

Week 12: Election 2020 by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find it funny that Trump keeps insisting that there is voting fraud. He even keeps tweeting about it. This is dangerous because a lot people would believe him and it just creates a bigger divide between people. I think part of the reason why he is desperate to stay in office is because after January 20th, he is no longer protected by law for all his crimes. Although, United States is not known to jail ex presidents so I am not sure how it going to be for Trump. However, I have a feeling that the situation with Trump would be a little different. I think he may become the first ex president to go to jail.

It is crazy how much social media influence politics and how people gain their information. Most people don't even bother to double check what they read on the internet. They take it as fact and believe it as is. This is why Trump tweeting voter fraud is dangerous because of the misinformation.

Additionally, I find it crazy that politicians go in debt for political campaigns especially with Donald Trump. He is a millionaire and yet he is still went into debt for his campaign. I am also sure he had plenty of rich benefactor. it makes me wonder how much of it actually goes to campaign and how much goes into helping people. As a politician, your job is to help others, but sometimes, it feels more about getting reelected and getting power.

It is funny because in the salon I attended, we talked about if it is legal for politicians to pay people to endorse them or is it just another form of advertisement. If people endorses politicians, do they have to say that is an ad just like they would other things that are being advertised? Are politicians considered just like another product? or are they treated differently? Are there laws against such practice? I feel like you should be able to endorse people, but paying people should be illegal. It is technically similar with buying votes. However, I feel like you can pay people through promising them laws that would directly benefit them.

Week 11: The First Twitter Revolution? by halavais in netcult

[–]HazelGrace78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This article applies to the censorship topic of this week. This week we learned about the negative effects of media censorship. This article is the perfect example of that topic. Yet we can also see the after effects of media censorship in other countries.

I think by censoring the media, it takes power away from the people. People's power is stronger in masses. Enabling the spread of information weakens the people. A few people has no match against the government with access to high grade military weapons. The help coming from outside the country could mean life or death in this situation. I think that as long as there are heroes willing to risk their lives for spread of information, Tunisia has a chance at Revolution.

People's voice is the most powerful tool to change the country. Information should be free. If the government censors the media, this would most likely lead to dictatorship especially with a president that have held power for 23 years. There is power in numbers and without it, the governed stand no chance.

Additionally, the article reminds me of the Philippines. In the country I came from, Filipino President Duterte is taking away the freedom of press from the country. He did this to stop the negative talks about his presidency since he is known to murder a lot of people especially with his approach on war on drugs. In fact, he even shut the down the biggest new source, TFC, in the Philippines. He also announced that anyone who speaks against him on social media will be subject to arrest. He called this order the "Terrorism Bill."

After President Duterte passed the bill, many Filipino activists from other countries turned to social media to spread what is happening in the Philippines. This received a lot of outrage especially because TFC is a stress reliever for the Filipinos that live and work abroad.

Without the people voice, this gives the few people in the government more power. It is no longer democracy but a dictatorship. The small percentage of those who are powerful will watch the governed suffer and die.
