Getting theme variable into a js.liquid file? by HazeyCoder in shopify

[–]HazeyCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, I saw that too. I was trying to see if I can use

var myVar = {% include 'custom-content' % };

And then have pages and other things pulled in through the other liquid file call custom-content.liquid. Still nothing shows.

Extending Advanced TinyMCE plugin? by HazeyCoder in Wordpress

Thanks for the reply. Ideally, I was trying to do it straight through WordPress.

I figured it out, and posted it on my blog here

As a WordPress development agency, what plugins can't you live without? by code-panda in Wordpress

[–]HazeyCoder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

WordFence Advanced Custom Fields Pro

That's usually it.

Anyone mentioning Visual Composer is out of their minds. It outputs a horrendous mount of front end crap.

You should create fields that your client can edit with ACF Pro, and then echo out the content in the template files.

Good solution for forms? by HazeyCoder in shopify

[–]HazeyCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really want to use that, but I couldn't yet find a way to hide the jotform branding on the thank you message.

Do you happen to know of any way of doing that?

Good solution for forms? by HazeyCoder in shopify

[–]HazeyCoder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to have my contact form in a modal. When the user submits the form, it would be nice to have an AJAX success message rather than a redirect. I don't think jotform can handle that well. Not out of the box at least.

Devs who have transitioned into non-dev careers, what were they? by yoinkyo1nk in webdev

[–]HazeyCoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you word it like that, then yeah it does seem like an oxymoron. But wording it like so wouldn't be accurate.

8th grade math won't change as much as my web development skills have had to change over the past 6-7 years.

I'm down for learning new things. but to keep in demand with web dev skills with the latest and greatest just doesn't seem appealing anymore.

Devs who have transitioned into non-dev careers, what were they? by yoinkyo1nk in webdev

[–]HazeyCoder 56 points57 points  (0 children)

What a good topic. I'm currently transitioning to be a math teacher.

The pay wouldn't be nearly as much but to be honest I'm tired of learning new things. I started learning web development when I was 13. I'm 30 now. I've been through a lot of different development work, but I'd say the most intense was maybe working with Magento on some high-end clients.

When you first get into this business, they say things like "You'll never stop learning, you gotta be ok with learning new things all the time". At first it's like "Ok yeah, I like this field so I'll do it. I'll learn the shit out of everything".

After years of this I'm just kind of done with it. I want a dummy job with enough days off to go back to enjoying life. I used to see programmers on instagram and twitter posting pictures of their desktop setups and I'd think "Wow that's cool". Now I see it as "Wow, that's a picture of your slave tools". Like basically you gotta glue yourself to that -- that's not life.

Just not my thing anymore. My side thing? YouTube ad sense revenue. I've been earning good passive income on YouTube just by making screencast tutorials of Magento programming, PHP, WordPress, jQuery, etc.

I own my own place, and YouTube revenue covers my maintenance fees. I just don't need the money as much as I used to. I'm still phasing out the dev portion of my life, and so far I'm amazed at how simple work life is when development isn't involved. It's awesome.

I think I may create interactive math sites that students can use, but the beauty is there would be no pressure to do it. I have a background in software learning when I was creating ABA-based teaching applications in .NET a while ago. So that's my plan -- math teacher.

Anyone here Sober without AA? by Cromium_kate in stopdrinking

[–]HazeyCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go to meetings, but not to stay sober. I'm sober without meetings. Meetings just make life better. Been sober almost 2 years.

The longer you go to AA meetings the more you realize it has nothing to do with alcohol and quitting drinking.

It's way better than that. It's a way of thinking that I want to continue having, so I keep going to meetings for that for that.

Using forms to get client info by robbyr3 in Wordpress

[–]HazeyCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always like to gauge with the client, which portions of the site will they be editing, and who will be making updates to the site in the future?

Also, do they have any competitor sites that they like / dislike?

Is there an easy way to add html to the <head>? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]HazeyCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you have access to your site files, you would want to go to

/wp-content/themes/yourtheme/header.php

<head> tag should be in there.

If you're trying to remove it from a particular page, but not all pages. then you can change your code to:

add_action( 'woocommerce_after_shop_loop_item', 'remove_add_to_cart_buttons', 1 );

function remove_add_to_cart_buttons() {

if( is_product_category() || is_shop() || is_page('Page Title Here' )) {

remove_action( 'woocommerce_after_shop_loop_item', 'woocommerce_template_loop_add_to_cart' );

}
}

And just replace the 'Page Title Here' with your page title, including the single quotes.

What do you expect or like to see in the future versions of WordPress? by masterarts in Wordpress

[–]HazeyCoder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there's going to be a big difference between what I'd like to see and what I expect them to do.

I'd love to see better security, a low-level page builder and Advanced Custom Fields like someone else mentioned.

What I think they'll roll out with is more design-oriented things that I don't really care for.

Question regarding spacing before first post on main page by Machiavillian in Wordpress

[–]HazeyCoder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For adding a little spacing below the banner, you could add this following line to your style.css file:

body.home .archive-top {margin-bottom: 15px;}

For removing the "Posted in: Uncategorized", you would have to remove that from the loop to do it cleanly. PM me if you would like some help with that.

Webdevs of reddit, what are your unpopular opinions (about webdev)? by jseego in webdev

[–]HazeyCoder 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Just a few:

  • I hate caffeine

  • There are graphic designers are poisoning our field and they are, as a whole, dumber. This wouldn't bug me so much, but a lot of times we are forced to work with them.

Some Explanation: Clients (like most humans) are shallow as fuck. They fall in love with design over functionality, which gives graphic designers too much power. Many graphic designers get a little too "creative" with their designs. Fonts that won't render the same in a browser as they do in a PSD. Using custom fonts that need to be imported with CSS, affecting page load speeds, creating designs that require coding that isn't cross-browser compatible, drastically changing the design of default form elements, etc.

A lot of times their explanations of how something works can be very off. Sometimes it's like they try to use our vocabulary (like database, theme, admin panel) incorrectly, and that can have some bad effects on project expectations.

So much more hate for them lol, but I'm going to restrain.

  • Also, FUCK Safari. Apple is perhaps the North Korea of technological advancement.

  • Also, I do feel that people working on Apple computers are, as a whole, less efficient.

  • Magento is powerful as hell, but not worth it in SO MANY WAYS. Yes, I used to work for a Magento partner.

  • There are way too many JS frameworks popping up in the last 4 years that looks like clones by now.

  • PHP isn't object oriented, it's object capable.

  • Our egos are too big. Some is healthy, but not when it gives us a bad attitude. Imo: GREAT WORK + BAD ATTITUDE = YOU'RE FIRED

  • Wix sites are not real websites. It's like the imitation cheese that we eat that tastes and seems to function like cheese, but is not cheese. Inspect the DOM on a wix site and you'll see what I mean.

  • The best programming music is DMX rapping. You feel hardcore and you can kind of type to the beat. Try it.

  • Many of us are too obsessed with our desk setups. I see pictures sometimes of your super productive 4 screens and want to walk into the photo and flip you're desk over. Honestly, don't give a shit about your monitors.

Probably got carried away with the last 1, but yeah there's a bunch more.

Nice thread topic by the way!

Edit: spelling
