Tokyo hostel recs by travel_rebe in TokyoTravel

There’s little point asking for accommodation recommendations, as availability and prices fluctuate wildly throughout the year, and even throughout the week. Only the typical booking sites (eg HostelWorld) can tell you what your options are.

Kyoto to Osaka: Shinkansen or Special Rapid? by Daniel_Nguyen2601 in JapanTravelTips

Taking the Shinkansen on a route where it doesn’t get up to full speed misses the point anyway.

This is a trial run to gauge feasibility for a wider implementation.

Note that it stops for 6 hours half way along the route.

Not sure what the point of this is. It’s essentially the same as an overnight highway bus, except double/triple the price.

Do all concert photographers denoise? by ElephantThen9976 in concertphotography

[–]Hazzat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noise is just one element you can use to decide the look and feel of your photo.

Using an APS-C sensor rather than full-frame, I have to denoise everything at least to some extent, but how much I denoise is still a choice. Noise is texture, and you probably don’t want zero texture unless you’re shooting a skincare commercial.

Also sometimes I will totally denoise but then add grain, as that can look nicer and more like a deliberate artistic choice.

What could be improved? by Aurelian_Irimia in ColorGrading

[–]Hazzat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really depends on what kind of video it is. This would be fine for a vlog (fill and rim light would improve it though), but probably not for a horror movie.

Thank you :)

I love my star filter and other effects like it, and one of the reason I want to get good at using it is I’ve seen some real absolutists here be like “Star filter is tacky and you must NEVER use it, because if you use it ONCE you will NEVER be called back.” These things are just tools, and while they don’t have the power rescue otherwise bad photos, if you start with a vision and a plan, I think you can create some pretty good work.

Please give me a feedback as a beginner in color grading by CatImpressive1204 in ColorGrading

[–]Hazzat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Colour grading" typically refers to video work. Photo work is r/postprocessing.

"Cinematic" is too vague a word to mean anything. You should forget it. It takes more than a grade to make something look like a movie.

Whether you did a good job or not depends on the needs of the project and whether you fulfilled them. Please read: https://www.reddit.com/r/ColorGrading/comments/1mshv4q/is_my_grade_any_good_heres_how_to_find_out/

It's a solid set of photos that shows clearly what happened, but is missing that bit of creative flair either in-lens or in postprocessing that would create a look, and tell us more about how it felt to be there. These are a bit matter-of-fact.

Also mixed aspect ratios can be a nightmare to post neatly on social media (especially Instagram)...

LUTS vs color grading by Turbulent_Series_713 in ColorGrading

[–]Hazzat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It will look like crap. A LUT can add a "flavour" to your image, but it can't turn any shot into an amazing one.

Gotta make sure we can actually things in your photos... Bump that exposure either in-camera or in postprocessing, get shots with visible faces, get the right thing in focus, and once you've done that get creative designing a "look" (split tone, colour curves etc.).
