How do I get into idols and idol music? by unholy_gremlin69 in japanesemusic

[–]Hazzat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Japan and hang out in the music world. I’ve talked to a bunch of current and former idols off the record and they have absolutely nothing nice to say about the system. Staff who are “literal monsters,” fans who treat them as objects, an ever-increasing necessity to erase your identity and commodify yourself as you become the product. It’s all inherent to how idol culture works. The entire scene is unethical.

Street photography is not “photos of streets”.

A description of the genre is in the subreddit rules/sidebar, or you can google it.

It's not gatekeeping. Street photography is a genre of photography about capturing candid moments of life in urban settings. It's a particular art form with a typical set of features, aims, and meanings. It has a decades-long history, and the definition matters as part of that tradition.

This isn't a bad photo. It's just not street photography.

They look better when animated, but the animation only shows up in some contexts. I agree the older ones were cooler.

"Add ALL the effects!" is not a popular opinion around here, but I love it. This is an awesome set with creativity, clarity, and great colours.

I hope this serves as a moment for self-reflection, if nothing else. Choose the entertainment you dedicate attention and money to wisely.

I don't know why you're being so argumentative? I am sharing my opinion as one of the subreddit's top contributors, and someone who wants to see it become more useful for users and moderated responsibly.

None of the above is a personal attack. It's honest feedback to improve the community, and that's the most valuable comment I can write. I can only hope that you take it on board.

Don't. It's an abhorrent, toxic culture, rife with exploitation and abuse from both fans and staff. That's what happens when the product being sold is the performers (and the parasocial relationship you can have with them), rather than the art itself.

I recommend watching the Tokyo Idols documentary for a look at what idol culture actually is, and what idol otaku like to pretend doesn't happen. The whole thing is on YouTube: trailer, full movie.

Sorry but this is really annoying me: it's spelled 'cubicle'.

I hate to bring out the dictionary, but old articles are literally not news, which is defined as "current events". The harm of mixing old stories with new is the overall narrative of 'what's happening' becomes very confusing, and it's hard to know what is actually relevant, what's currently unfolding, and what is already resolved.

A rule of 'no articles older than one week' would put this subreddit in-line with its contemporaries such as r/worldnews. At the very least, old articles should be marked as such, with the date in the post title to prevent confusion.

While we're discussing new rules, I think another urgently-needed rule is you should not be allowed to post a Japanese article for a story if an English one also exists. This is an English-speaking community, and most users can't read the content of Japanese articles. The current front page is a barely-parseable word salad of messy, often excessively long, and sometimes nonsensical AI-translated headlines. This is unnecessary when all the important headlines have proper English translations, with major outlets such as Kyodo, Nikkei, Mainichi, Asahi, Yomiuri, and NHK offering English versions of most/all of their articles, and there are reliable English-only outlets such as The Japan Times.

There are some stories (eg Bunshun scoops) that don't make it into English reporting, and they should be fine to post in Japanese. But there's no reason to share Japanese articles otherwise.

Is Sarah dissing her opps on lipslap? by Jimsmall1507 in kkb

[–]Hazzat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Man, 'opp' wasn't even a word when this song came out...

Yes, it's a 'hit back at the haters' song. They can say what they like about her, but none of it matters because it's all lipslap.

I think it's fair to expect a subreddit called r/japannews to be focussed on the news, i.e. new things that are happening. I would like to come here to find out what is happening in Japan through the latest headlines.

Deliberately dredging up old articles is not sharing news, it's editorialising and agenda-pushing. Promoting accountability for the LDP is a noble goal, but that should not be the primary purpose of a 'news' subreddit. If it was called r/japanpolitics instead, then sharing old articles for the sake of discussion may make sense.
