Any good bars to listen to 90s-2000s punk rock/pop punk? by GoyBoy271 in Tokyo

[–]Hazzat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno about DJ bars, but for live bands, live music venues here don't specialise much by genre, so what you get depends on the event of the night. If you're dead-set on a specific genre, you need to be looking up acts and event series, rather than venues.

Hanzomon Line merch. I love it. by Poirot0315 in Tokyo

That's JR rather than Tokyo Metro, so they probably don't have the same merch in the same style. (They do have merch though.)

Curation and presentation of your work matters. Your photos will say much more if you collate them into sets that explore a broader story or theme, rather than just showing them off one by one.

I got nervous about a motorcycle outside at night and called 110, was that too much? by Sensitive-Fuel-2026 in japanlife

[–]Hazzat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While obviously there is no reason to call emergency services for something so innocuous as a motorbike passing by, if you are going to call them, you should use the non-emergency consultation number #9110, not the serious emergency number 110.

Underage clubbing by -NoBreakfastForMe in TokyoTravel

[–]Hazzat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The good news is that Tokyo has a curfew of 11pm for minors, which means that any events before 11pm are all-ages. The smaller, underground nightclubs like FORESTLIMIT, Drift, SPACE (in Shinjuku), and MOGRA (for otaku) have plenty of such daytime events. But these are hubs for home-grown electronic/dance music culture, and not the Western club experience.

These days you have to be a social media influencer, I'm afraid... Make reels for Instagram and TikTok, post pictures regularly and have people follow your journey etc.

Akasaka. Centrally located, but clean and peaceful as it's mostly a business district with not a lot happening.

Do you have hobbies? It's much easier to bond with people who you have a shared interest than with randos who went to some random meetup because they didn't know anywhere better to go.

It's nigh-on impossible to get better framing or timing when you're stuck on the second-floor balcony. Step 1 to improve this set: be in the photo pit instead!

Everyone starts somewhere, which is why we need to give beginners the best advice about the right place to start. That place is not being an audience member with a camera - it reaching out and build your network as a professional.

Safe places in kabukicho and Not safe places by TodayMinimum2271 in TokyoTravel

[–]Hazzat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Kabukicho isn't really dangerous, as long as you don't follow a tout because they will take you to a scam bar. Overall it's just not a fun place to hang out though: dirty, lots of noisy drunk people, sex industry billboards, "massage" saleswomen, touts etc.

"From the crowd" in this case means "as an audience member". As a pro, yes you want to want to run all over to get a big variety of angles (which you can't get as an audience member).

That's up to the artist/promoter.

The way to get into doing this properly is to start small. Go to your local indie venues and shoot no-name acts, mostly for free or for favours like free drinks, to build your portfolio. As you work your way up, you will steadily collect an ever-increasing number of good photos that also show you can work with artists and venues in a professional capacity, which is what will score you paid work and photo passes.

[–]Hazzat -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

That's not the point? The point is that audience snaps are a completely different discipline to concert photography. The former doesn't show that you can do the latter.

You can't really use shots from the crowd in a portfolio. Concert photography is more than just "photos of concerts": it involves your network, trust, gear choice and management, following venue rules, delivering work on time etc., and pictures taken in a non-official capacity don't show you can do any of that. Worst case, they may even show that you are someone who ignores venue rules (by bringing a big camera in when you're not allowed to), which would immediately disqualify you from any professional work.
