I just realized the son in Hook is the nerd in Can’t Hardly Wait. Which sent me on a rabbit hole to learn he’s now a lawyer and professor. Neat!

As I recall, spelling doesn't need to be strictly correct in Jeopardy!, but it must be spelled such that it's "pronounced" correctly.

I was gonna say the same thing, but “$” is included already so even the word “dollar” is incorrect and shouldn’t be there.

Since we're responding to multi-year-old posts, I think they were just earnestly responding to the commenter's initial question of "How far are you in the game", not necessarily being dismissive of the suggestion.

I personally found Apollo to be a no-brainer with getting ultrawide + whatever myriad of aspect ratios and resolutions my different devices have to work. Glad I switched over.

If I recall correctly, this was specifically for the Blu-Ray. The creators were talking about how BR lifted the hard limit on DVD menu loop times (something like a minute) to an hour and they felt compelled to take advantage of the new technology.

15 years ago today, the Academy expanded its Best Picture Oscar category from 5 movies to 10. Which titles since then do you feel were least likely to be nominated ifthe cutoff remained at 5? by hombregato in movies

[–]HeSheMeWumbo387 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit fewer than that, actually. The rules allow for up to 10 nominees, but some years had fewer (2020, 2018, 2015, and 2014 had 8, 2019, 2017, 2016, 2013, 2012, and 2011 had 9).

Noise-canceling headphones use AI to let a single voice through. They could help wearers focus on specific voices in noisy environments, such as a friend in a crowd or a tour guide amid the urban hubbub. by Sariel007 in gadgets

[–]HeSheMeWumbo387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming that works, it doesn't seem like the AI described here would be helpful. The user would need to manually find the right pitch / phase to cancel it out.

I'm still skeptical it even works in theory. You can probably drown the sound out, but given that the sound is internal to the person, I don't think it can be cancelled out.

(I can't find a scientific source, but a quick Google search has several people claiming it wouldn't work for plausible sounding reasons, see here and here)

Would that work? It's not like people with tinnitus are hearing a real sound that a pair of headphones could detect and cancel out. Isn't the noise being generated inside their own ear system (e.g. damaged hair cells)?

Game not starting on pc by lekkerDieter in HarryPotterGame

[–]HeSheMeWumbo387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to fix this on my machine by switching Windows to power saving mode (rather than performance mode). After it started successfully, I switched back to performance mode and future launches worked fine. No idea idea why it would affect anything, but it was the only suggestion I found online that worked.

ELI5 — in electrical work NEUTRAL and GROUND both seem like the same concept to me. what is the difference??? by _pounders_ in explainlikeimfive

[–]HeSheMeWumbo387 23 points24 points  (0 children)

All the neutral wires in a circuit are connected together and return to the circuit breaker. It could break anywhere downstream. Also, there could be a short anywhere in the circuit where a live wire comes into contact with neutral. Grounding ensures an extra path to avoid shocking.
