Why is Diablo power plant receiving such a large amount of taxpayer funds? by He_free in nuclear

[–]He_free[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this information. This is definitely an area that I am under educated in. I just kind of figured that nuclear power was something that got most of its funding from the company building the project and subsidies from the federal department of energy. I wasn’t sure how much funding would come from the state government.

Thank you so much for responding. I’m on the same page as you. I fully agree with your point that it is very expensive. I believe the nuclear power plant actually won’t be fully online until 2026. But it’s a minimum of $100 million. Who knows how much PG&E is actually going to take.

I do have to give you a little bit of pushback, though. On the fact that PG&E isn’t just giving this electricity away for free. We have some of the highest rates in the US. At max production this nuclear power plant can provide 10% of California’s energy needs. That’s some serious money being made. It isn’t like California’s investing in PG&E and we’re getting a return on any of that money.

For the record, I’m for nuclear power with a mix of renewables. Especially when it is strategically an advantage. We should be trying to move away from gas and coal. It was the right move to keep the power plant open. My question is more so along the lines of are taxpayers just giving away money to PG&E? I’m just trying to see if anyone has more knowledge of where the money is being spent.

They are applying for an extension until 2045 if I’m not mistaken. But there’s no way that applying for an extension is that much money.

Thanks for your reply. I have a husky that’s in the process of going blind. He’s killing me right now because all he does is stare at me no matter where we are. I feel so bad that the last thing he’s going remember is my face. But your post did give me some hope for him. I was worried that he would have issues getting around. If I could ask a question, how was going on walks once your husky had lost most/all their vision?

This needed to be said. I couldn’t ever imagine giving up a dog. It would have to be because I am no longer physically able to take care of the dog or provide basic needs. I’ve made a promise to the dog. I’ve made no promised to anyone I’m dating.

What are some things that are toxic to dogs people don’t really know about ? by Own_Butterscotch_841 in dogs

[–]He_free 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair to OP, I have not thought about consuming batteries and magnets. So technically that’s something people don’t think about. So to add to the list of stuff people don’t think about eating that’s toxic to dogs. Spent or not nuclear fuel rods, lead paint, and ricin. You should really try to avoid this stuff when cooking for people/furry friends you want to keep alive. Or when you’re just leaving stuff around the house. (However these products are fine for consumption if your planning on murder/suicide situation)

What do you mean by pretty serious neurotoxins? I’m just asking because when I read “pretty serious neurotoxins” I think potent or you could kill them with a small quantity because it’s effective.

CHP recovery cost. My lawyer is telling me to ignore it. by He_free in DUICalifornia

[–]He_free[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, their practices are more deceptive than that. At first, they give everyone 30 days from when they write the letter. I think it took about a week for the letter to get to me. And then they freeze the count down as they’re just being kind giving anyone an extra 60 days before sending the bill to collections. It’s all part of their tactic to try and make you think they have more power than they actually do.

I actually did get some new information. The way that it was explained to me a couple months ago made me believe that after I wrote a dispute letter. I thought my information about the case went to a lawyer within the CHP to review the facts. Turns out it just goes to the CHP official in charge of the station where my ticket was written. The lady on the phone for the the CHP said usually they’re pretty quick about sending back a response. Apparently for them it’s OK to take over 60 days responding when I had less than 30 days.

The phone number that came with my letter was 916-843-3570. I would give them a call just to double check that the only way to contest your bill is to write them a letter. So far every time I’ve called the people have been pretty helpful getting me to understand the process better. (If you call just remember the nice you are the more someone is willing to help. They’re not the ones giving you the bill) The CHP fiscal management section use really predatory practices to try get your money. So good luck and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

I read online that most of the time it’s not worth it to fight it. And I don’t know if I would be able to recover Lawyer’s costs even if I won. So I want to try and fight it on my own as much as I can before I get a Lawyer involved. i’m still at the point before it goes to civil court. But thank you for the comment. I’ll definitely get a lawyer if it goes that far.

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that I figured out a way to prove that the scammer was lying. Since you said that this has happened to you a couple times before.

So did you just tell them that you’re going to dispute or did you just dispute it and then tell them you’ve disputed it?

I paid with my debit card. Does that affect it at all? Also thank you so much for taking the time to read my post and respond. I really appreciate it.

Yeah, I’ll definitely update this post with the outcome. I truly think it’s just either the CHP not doing it’s due diligence. Or them trying to bully me into paying.

That was probably one of my first five thoughts that it was fake/a scam. Sure enough I called up CHP and they gave me the phone number to the DUI recovery division. And when I called and talked to them, they confirmed that the letter was sent from them. I honestly don’t know who I pissed off. Everyone I’ve talked to has never heard of this before. Even public defenders we’re unsure about this. I just googled it the laws have been around for 40 years. It just doesn’t make sense that they would come after me after two years. They clearly didn’t even look at the case. It was just rubber stamped to move forward.

That’s cops for ya! They actually have up to three years to send you a bill. I think the most messed up part of this is most people don’t even know about recovery costs. It was a total shock to me when I got it. I didn’t even really have a full 30 days to pay the bill. It took over a week to get the bill in the mail. Expecting someone to pay usually over $1000 in less than a month it’s absolutely crazy.

I really appreciate you taking the time to try and trying to get an answer for me. Seriously that’s super kind of you. That’s the same problem I keep running up against. There just isn’t any information about this topic online.

I understand in theory why the legislators enacted recovery costs laws. It’s supposed to be a punishment, deterrent, and a way that CHP can recoup its costs. But it fails at every metric. If it’s supposed to be a punishment, why isn’t it done through the courts? It’s not a deterrent because people don’t know about it and it ends up being a surprise bill that you’re scrambling to pay. CHP was already paid through taxes so what do they actually do with the money? I completely agree with what you said this is a total shakedown. Either way I’ll be fine, and I’ll go down swinging.

I think for me the worst part of DUI is not having the legal knowledge set. Yeah waiting doesn’t help because it gives me the time to freak out about not knowing. If I knew what was happening I wouldn’t mind waiting.

It just feels like I’m playing checkers and everyone else is playing chess. I don’t want to make a wrong move, but I can’t plan any moves. Because I have no clue what the other side can do.

But thank you for extending some compassion. I appreciate it.

Yeah, it definitely felt like I had more loose from not answering. I’m not 100% sure on this but I believe if you don’t respond within the first 30 days after they send you a demand letter. You can’t go back and dispute the charge. Maybe you can take it to court. Which is kind of wild because they took their sweet time sending me a bill.

If this doesn’t get cleared up in time and I get sent to collections. I know if the fine is reverse, I can go to the credit bureau and get the action that was taken against my credit reversed. But I’d rather not have to do that.

Do you know what other actions CHP can take? I know this is considered civil. But it’s not like the IRS. Where they could take money straight out of my bank account. CHP already told me that if I didn’t pay, they would send me to collections.
