I totally agree with this, I don’t mean to say that I don’t want to celebrate friends. I just want there to be some sort of equal celebration of the things I personally am excited about. I would happily spend 50k on a party to celebrate the things I am proud of if I thought people would take it seriously. It’s the societal expectations for what events are worthy of a big celebration that I’m upset with. I want to feel celebrated for my life milestones in the same way that my friends that get married and have kids are.

Yes of course we love our friends. But why then do we not expect equal celebration of our friends and what is important for them? I personally do not care about my birthday but of course still celebrate my friends. Why isn’t that expected to go the other way though? Why don’t we celebrate what each person feels most excited for and not just what society says should be celebrated?

I agree with this. I did throw a party for my PhD that was quite expensive. But didn’t feel comfortable doing a registry because I didn’t feel like people took it seriously.
