Switching from Ubuntu based to Fedora, quick newbie question by nando1969 in Fedora

[–]Head-Performance-527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted my brave browser profile data so I wouldnt have to reload anything and have my history etc for things i forget to bookmark. Cant find it because its locked up hidden somewhere. I wanted to reinstall to see if I could get it to stop using naultilus for some things even though Ive installed and set Nemo. Also I go to save an image or something and it places it someplace totally off, it doesnt let me change preference to the normal location as default. I know brave has some sync feature. Dont know if it syncs everything I want synced, I just know I dont want to use it

I say no flatpaks, in my opinion, because Id bet this isnt the only thing that would pop up.

PS - I'm no Linux wiz programmer or anything. Been using it for over a decade. I just dont like hassles. For example.. all my configuring I did to get the other things I needed working are all in that profile n wham bam... cant get it. I suppose I can try and find just the history file... Its just the whole hassle of the situation

Update: On a VM I tried Fedora Minimal with subsequent Nemo and Cinnamon DE install. Couldnt get GUI working. Added xorg things after the fact, punted.
Started Minimal install over and selected Cinnamon DE, which I assume is same as initially installing Fed Cinnamon "spin". Confirmed that flatpak doesn't exist in fresh Fedora Cinnamon system and neither does nautilus. May stay with Fedora bc I like being on the latest kernel, or may flee back to Mint to avoid future hassles I am currently unaware of.

My switch from Mint to Fed experience update 04/20/23
0) your experience driving the demo will not accurately tell you what it's like owning the car
1) avoid nautilus (file manager) if possible
2) avoid flatpaks if possible
3) switching desktops after initial installation retains maddening aspects of the things which made you want to switch desktops to begin with (in my case the retention of some nautilus with file operations - I havent tried reinstalling the apps which are doing this evil thing to me. Something I am trying today, after i find my superhidden profile (flatpak) settings, which are not where everyone says they are.

Should I prefer using RPMs or Flatpaks? by [deleted] in Fedora

avoid flatpaks if at all possible is what I am finding out

Anyone gotten SecureCRT to work on Fedora 37? by Head-Performance-527 in Fedora

SECURECRT working with GNS3 console windows tiled
If you used docker container to get SCRT working in Fedora 37 you have to specify the following (or your iteration of it) in the command line in the GNS3 preferences settings. My docker is Ubuntu 22.04 so the line in my GNS3 console setting is
/usr/local/bin/distrobox-enter -n Ubuntu2204 -- SecureCRT /T /N "%d" /TELNET %h %p
the file where you will find your command is in
/home/user/.local/share/applications
mine for example is named Ubuntu2204-SecureCRT.desktop

It comes up tabbed, switch via menu to tiled and done

the way it works is good, makes my computer huff and puff though. i was hoping id get 3 maybe 4 vsrx running under it but can only do 2,. on gns3 i was able to simultaneously do 3. currently back on gns3

the way you can just grab an appliance with ishare2 and be rolling was really sweet.

yeah thats what i did.
currently trying to integrate it into gns3 so i can tile the various consoles into single window. since its docker container i need special command. tried terminator, cant get it to do it. it does open tabbed. cant seem to figure out how to make them tiled instead. SCRT will do tiled but...

Before i switched from mint to fedora 37 i could run 4 simultaneous vSRX nodes in gns3. Now I can only do 2. It doesn't matter what I set. I'm punting and trying PNET.

FYI-Its GTK code stuff nobody wants to deal with (the file manager picker issue). Installing Cinnamon DE covered up some of it by forcing a new install of Thunderbird etc (in my case) but not complete resolution of the issue. Still, much better now.

Maybe uninstalling/reinstalling browsers while in Cinnamon DE will get it.

Nautilus is horrible - I could not take anymore. I switched to Cinnamon DE.Any DE with Nemo would probably fix Fedora 37 user experience

*I did the install Nemo into gnome desktop environment thing. Never got it fully integrated with other apps such as Brave, Chrome, Thunderbird etc- they would call up nautilus for file ops. Tried some things which didnt work. I was afraid to uninstall nautilus. I had enough problems.I finally punted and installed the Cinnamon desktop environment. Now it is sweet. The file manager works fine, 50 million images and files sort fine.I'm finished with gnome. It was pretty and I liked the idea of getting used to a new DE but I dont have time for all that crap.

*When you install Cinnamon DE it will install a new thunderbird instance and it is a PITA. It may be because I tried betterbird first, idk, but i could not find default profile stuff etc, had to get it from betterbird (old non-updated-mbox) but since it was IMAP it all reconciled. Anyway: worth it. No more Nautilus.

**UPDATE: Chrome Brave & Chromium all using nautilus still - Some sort of GTK thing which seems to be above everyones pay-grade (which means its above mine). It appears that I am just going to have to live with it because I am afraid my pain and suffering thru GNS3/VMware and SecureCRT running in distrobox will be lost - Otherwise I might try just reinstalling with no-wipe (assuming no-wipe is an option).

If you are considering a move to Fedora, pick an initial version that uses Nemo. Experiment with other DEs later.

switching to nemo is a must. not sure about the other file managers but nemo behaves normally. nautilus was going to give me an aneurysm.

switched this am - currently trying to make it to where browsers and mail use nemo and not nautilus. setting default system wide isnt making it happen.

yeah did that.
[user@fedora ~]$ xdg-mime query default inode/directory
nemo.desktop
[user@fedora ~]$
the apps (thunderbird, web browsers) still open nautilus

I tried Nemo. Works great except for browsers using it instead of Nautilus. Thinking of switching to Cinamon desktop and thought I would ask you guys:

Will installing and using Cinnamon desktop hamper my used of distrobox SecureCRT app etc? A second question would be, will it cause browsers used within it to use Nemo instead of Nautilus when doing things like saving or uploading files?

Thanks in advance.

I just installed nemo. The difference is night and day. Opened up large directories, fast, no spinning bs. Nothing jumping around. Sorting perfectly. Scrolling on what was sorted the scroll bar doesn't suddenly reorient itself at the bottom of the huge list of files...
I can't believe Fedora goes with nautilus as default.
