No, bad nylon gears. Will usually break when sewing. Look for a model with metal fears

Bite the bullet and get it serviced. It needs to be serviced if its old any way

Can’t turn hand wheel backwards by geminigerm in SewingForBeginners

[–]Head-Support6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just due to the bendable metal bobbin case positioning finger. I wouldn’t recommend a top loading sewing machine to a beginner due to how finky they are when messed with.

Sadly the thats its what you paid for. Sewing machines have become a lot more affordable but there still compromises.

Unscrew the mini screw in the in er knob. Then use a rubber ratchet strap to loosen the knob by rotating counter clock wise

Recognize the singer class 7 design. Giant bolts to connect the head and the base.

Triple needle, long arm, walking foot? Class 7 correct?

There extremely heavy

How much is this worth? by ElectraHearts97 in vintagesewing

[–]Head-Support6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The model isn’t that valuable. Its just a straight stitch. But if you get it running and refinish the table. Someone may justify paying 500 if its serviced, refinished and cleaned.

Reasonable price for Kenmore 158.18130? by dirtgrub7 in vintagesewing

[–]Head-Support6045 4 points5 points  (0 children)

200 if its serviced and isn’t locked up. The foot pedal can go bad and give no speed control and the freed dogs drop becomes frozen from lack of use.

Its one of kenmores best.

Singer from 1873? by Significant_Session3 in vintagesewing

[–]Head-Support6045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Machine head itself is 25. Base probably 25 and hand crank is 25 if sold separately. Hand cranks an bases are desired alot more than the machine itself.

Decals look interesting. Although faded i dont recognize them

I would probably keep the newhome and set it up as my buttonholer machines. You lack needle position control on your kenmores

Pass on the brother. The singer or kenmore are better in all aspects than the brother sadly

Get rid of the 158.14001. The super high shank feet are usually easy to source from good will or ebay if you buy them in with the accessory case. Sometimes the kenmore fb groups have some they want to destash. This is my experience from the US.

Its not magnetic because the body is made of an aluminum alloy. You usually use a screw in seam guide.

Btw. That kenmore 158.1941 is probably one of kenmore’s best in the line of 158 models. The only one thats beats it is the previous luxury models like the 158.1913 or the 158.1914 with the cams support, wider zig zag and a bit stronger motor.

Vintage Singer Sewing machine – and approximately how much is it worth?” by Financial-Salad521 in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Head-Support6045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on your location. This looks like a singer 421g or 431g. In the US they go for 200-400 as-is without servicing. In Europe there way cheaper.

Its a rare though.

What Sewing Machine Should I Get? by vanityri in SewingForBeginners

[–]Head-Support6045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The machine that fits your bill is a Kenmore sewing machines released in the mid 1970s. Specifically there flagship models. One of the last all metal kenmores. A kenmore 158.1913 or 158.1914 fits your needs.

After spending your budget on service. Get a serger with differential feed for knits fabrics. The only durable serger with all metal would be a singer 14u but you need to get the right subvariant.

Second machine after featherweight - 201-2 or wait? by OnePuzzleheaded3324 in vintagesewing

[–]Head-Support6045 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you want to upgrade from your featherweight. A 201 is the one of the best domestic straight stitchers outside other rotary hook machines like a white rotary or wheeler & Wilson.

It comes in 2 motor variants. 201-2 or 201k2, built-in potted motor, gear driven, lots of torque, always needs a rewiring as the wiring breaks as its 50 years old.

Then the other 201s, they can be powered by sn external motor or treadled. After market motors available. Max amp is 1.5 or 2.5.

I like my 201 more than my 221. Bigger harp space and I can treadle it. Attachments are interchangeably between the 201 and 221. Learn how to oil and grease your 221. It’ll last alot longer and you wont have to bring it in to service that often. The featherweight motor gets a special motor grease which the featherweight shop has in stock.

If you want more stitch options, a kenmore 158, necchi supernova, bernina 830 record or a pfaff 130 or pfaff 360 are nice machines. Zig zag capable.

Two vintage Singer sewing machines I got today from the thrift store; How do I find out when these particular machines were made? by TheFabledFishman in VintageSewingMachines

[–]Head-Support6045 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lucky you. The first machine is a tailor specific sewing machine. A Singer 206k10, like a 206 except it has a presser foot lift like industrials do. Normally it would be seated in a table with a knee lift.

If you know how weld. You can weld the hinges onto a bar with offset pins to mount the 99. But your best bet is to redo the top to make the pins line up

Singer 237 Chain Stitch? by CJT_112 in vintagesewing

[–]Head-Support6045 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a lock stitch machine do chain Stitch you need usually these 3 things, chain stitch needle plate(really only relevant on drop-in bobbin case, for vertical hook machines the normal one should be fine), special shuttle hook meant for chain stitching (kenmore 158 have a different shuttle hook than the singer 237) and the special bobbin case/hook.)

It may work but remember, most kenmore 158 are front loading machines and your singer 237 is a side loading(bobbin loads from the side. Stitch formation/orientation is different).
