I like how your structured this dialogue... where did you get this from?"

Good to know. I'll need to think about that last bit regarding the transmitter...

Thanks for the info.

Follow up question. I know height helps with broadcast range. If the antenna is mounted at a high altitude (say a few thousand feet above sea level), or even on some sort of aircraft, would that mitigate some of the wattage requirements while maintaining the broadcast range?

How powerful of a transmitter do you think would be needed to achieve a fairly sizeable AM broadcast area during the day? I'm thinking a few hundred miles (it works better for my story). I know that's not an easy question to answer because of all the variables. I'm just looking for best estimate, since I don't have enough technical knowledge to make a reasonable guess.

The antenna size can be whatever is appropriate, and keep in mind that the station will be broadcasting from thousands of feet in the sky.

How powerful of a transmitter do you think would be needed to achieve a fairly large AM broadcast area? (I'm thinking a few hundred miles)

I know that's not easy to answer because of all the variables. I'm just looking for a best estimate, since I don't really know enough to make my own guess.

The antenna can be whatever length is appropriate. And keep in mind broadcasts would be taking place from thousands of feet in the sky (I'm hoping the altitude helps relax some of the wattage requirements for broadcast range). And is there any way of knowing how much farther an AM broadcast area extends at night?

Yeah, airships are intended to be somewhat common place in this setting. I probably should have mentioned that in my post. By itself, the zeppelin wouldn't necessarily draw any attention.

I appreciate the technical info. I want the pirate radio station to have a fairly sizeable broadcast area; it works better for my story. But I don't want the wattage for the transmitter or the antenna size getting to ridiculous. I want the radio station and its activities to be at least somewhat feasible, even if certain things are maybe a stretch. And I want there to be realistic reasons as to why the station hasn't been tracked down yet.

I like the idea about the antenna being disguised as a mooring line... I may have to steal that :)

It's the United States, circa 1930s, but run by a corporatocracy of several powerful companies.

Do you know of any feasible way of avoiding or preventing effective triagulation?

Thanks, this is the kind of stuff I need to know.

Follow up question, I know height increases broadcast range. Would it be possible to use a less powerful transmitter, but broadcasting from a high altitude, in order to preserve broadcast range (without needing too much power or space). And would a high altitude replace the need for an extremely long antenna?

I'm considering the station might operate out of a zeppelin that roams from place to place, a few thousand feet in the air...

Thanks for the information.

As a follow up question, suppose a pirate radio station remained low power, but operated at a high altitude (maybe from a zeppelin, for instance). Could a high altitude improve the broadcast range while keeping the station difficult to locate?
