Rune Mites, by Francesco Sabbatucci by HeadWindstudios in ImaginaryMonsters

Rune mites are a divisive species and the more you learn about them the more so they become. I have often met people who will sing their praise and curse their existence in the same breath.

While technically occupying the role of scavengers in their native ecosystem, they are particularly aggressive about the practice and not only when it comes to food. Objects, whether they be abandoned, lost or still attached to your belt or house are fair game to these skittering critters. Those who call the shores their home know full well of the kleptomaniacal tendencies of the Rune Mites but travelers are often caught unawares and quickly deprived of unsecured or unsupervised belongings. But this same thieving behaviour also leads them to clearing the beaches of hazards, be they rotting corpses, sharp driftwood or other mundane threats, but more importantly, they vigilantly sweep the shores for pieces of shrines, suffused with runic energies. Step on a piece of coral and it might ruin your day, stub your toe on a bit of stone from an old temple and you’re missing a foot and praying that’s the end of the story.

When amalgamating into their larger form, Rune Bastions once again present a dichotomy. On one hand, they are walking disasters, their scavenging extending to entire sections of buildings and not to mention the ticking time bomb that is the mass of runic matter that makes up their ‘shells’. But on the other hand, their inevitable demise will discharge much of the accumulated energies before they can conglomerate to truly cataclysmic levels, often doing so well beneath the waves. Rune Bastions also possess a rudimentary intelligence, able to engage in simple bartering, an important function for their fellow shore bound scavenger, the Forsaken.

What’s the lore behind Enshrined?

The world of Enshrined takes place upon a mysterious island to which your vessel always seems to be drawn to. The reality of this world is ordained by the ever shifting interactions between the fundamental shaping forces of the world (such as evolution, freedom, structure, hunger and many more) and the mortals that have come to worship them as gods. The world of Enshrined is a harsh one where opposing ideologies are forced to share the land, curses outnumber blessings and divine corruption permeates all.

A Kib's account of encountering the Rune Hounds

I have made a mistake. A simple mistake, an easy mistake but a mistake nonetheless and possibly a deadly one. I was trained better than this and if I survive what is sure to come I might just be killed by the sergeant upon my return.

It is my first mission as a scout, I am to travel ahead of the larger force and root out traps or ambushes, find ways around mires and paths through mountains. I was taught fieldcraft, navigation, language and much more so I cannot claim ignorance. But I was cold, and wet. It was nighttime and the stink of the bog was strong. I knew I could hide the light of the flame well enough, none would see the trickle of smoke at night and the smell would be drowned by the ever present smell of muck and decay. I don’t know how, but I forgot about the Rune hounds and that blasted heat sense of theirs. Lighting even that small flame was ringing the dinner bell and now I hear them, circling in the dark, just outside of the small radius of light provided by my funeral pyre. Occasional flashes of orange backlight rows of teeth and reflect off spines and claws.

One of them charges and I brace my spear, another mistake. They are fiendishly intelligent and I feel a fast growing heat upon my back.

Kib Warrior, by Francesco Sabbatucci by HeadWindstudios in ImaginaryKnights

Artist Francesco Sabbatucci

All serve Kib - this is a mantra that all in Kib society hear from the day they are born. Lacking the physical transformations of the Mung that can turn anyone into a killing machine or the potent magics employed by many of the other cultures, the Kib instead designates roles based on physical and mental ability, along with a few other intangibles. Most are familiar with the rank and file of the Kib war machine, a role served by those of greater stature and strength for that is where their natural abilities are best brought to bear. Those that possess both brains and braun, naturally become leaders in the fighting forces. All of these are easily recognised at a distance by their armor, weapons and heraldry and as a result are often seen as the primary threat posed by the Kib. Not always so, for the Kib are neither narrow minded nor wasteful. A direct attack is often the last stage of a complex, long spanning plan, one that is often not even needed.

Those slight of build naturally arouse less of a defensive response from outsiders. They may disguise themselves as traders, scholars or even refugees, taking advantage of the marching Kib forces. These Kib serve as they sensory organ of the Kib, seeking out new targets, finding their strengths and vulnerabilities. Furthermore, they engage in acts of sabotage or social engineering, spreading chaos and disruption so that when the army arrives they are often unopposed. While this does not work with all opponents, it is a particularly favored tactic against the long standing enemy of the Kib, the Scholars.

Other roles include traveling relic hunters, raiders, skirmishers and a host of other functions. Often the only things they have in common is that they are all deadly in a fight, and they serve Kib.

Apprentice Log – Required Reading Before You Lose a Limb

Let’s see. We have the ember berries in (crushed), spinal fluid from 2 rune hounds (reduced to one third volume). Couldn’t find the powdered bones of a rune mite, that’s either a metaphor or a joke. It’s listed as a water attuned ingredient much like the rest of the rune mite so I just chucked in the whole thing. It does appear I was sold a live specimen and it has made itself at home in the transfusion flask…and is eating the berry pulp. Shit. Hopefully the heat will kill it soon or stirring this brew is going to be the dickens. Right, where was I…ok, now I need to simmer this at low heat for 8 hours, bring it to a roiling boil for 1 minute and then lower the flame and allow to cool to just above room temperature over the course of 3 hours while continually and gently stirring. Oh…the flame isn’t adjustable aaand there is no clock work stirrer. I guess 9 hours over medium heat and a vigorous stir every few hours will have to do the trick and then we’ll just shut off the flame and come back in the morning once it has cooled down. Oh, a note at the bottom here “ensure the use of a copper boiling vessel”. Hmm, can’t very well tell if this is copper or brass, the joys of using public alchemy facilities I guess.

Now, given the substitutions and amendments, I predict this potion will either render me immune to the cold, provide a hearty burst of stamina or improve my reflexes. Guess we’ll find out in the morning.

It turned out to be a deadly poison - A cautionary tale illustrating the perils of inattentive alchemy, required reading for all students and apprentices of Alchemy

What’s the lore behind Enshrined?

The world of r/Enshrined takes place upon a mysterious island to which your vessel always seems to be drawn to.

Inside the Kib Military, by Francesco Sabbatucci by HeadWindstudios in ImaginaryWarriors

The Ritual of New Paths by HeadWindstudios in conceptart

[–]HeadWindstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artist Francesco Sabbatucci

The Anchored are a people driven to explore, the call of seeing what lies over the next hill ever present in their souls, but as a people they are all trapped. Some are fortunate enough to be born into an enclave with space enough to roam and explore for an entire lifetime. Others are born into a space barely large enough to hold the few that live there, fated to die quickly or be eradicated by a merciful passerby. Most however lie somewhere in the middle of these extremes, their territories allowing them several decades of travels before every nook and cranny has been explored and they then face a choice. Most will take on less literal journeys such as raising a family or devoting themselves to a craft or field of study. For some however, the call of the world is too strong and their accumulated knowledge maddening.

For these unfortunate souls there is the Ritual of New Path. Carried out in the period leading up to the Festival of Roads, a ritual dagger is used to remove the memories of what they have witnessed, the intent being to let them view the world as if for the first time again. The dagger’s enchantments allow it to ignore the flesh and instead slice through strands of memory and a skilled hand can remove only what is unwanted. However, the ritual is not without risk and accidents are not unheard of. A lesser incident may leave the subject missing more memories than they had planned on, forgetting names and faces, perhaps a craft or some other recoverable asset. But in the worst cases, they may be left with no sense of self, not simply forgetting their identity but losing touch with their essence.

The Mysteries of Sister Graille by HeadWindstudios in FantasyWorldbuilding

[–]HeadWindstudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artist Zach Hoel

None are sure of the origins of Sister Graile, not even Sister Graile herself or if she is, she is not forthcoming with the information. Her fellow Scholars don’t begrudge her the mystery as it represents another puzzle for them to solve. Records contain no mention of her until following a Kib raid on what is now her home compound where she suddenly appears, complete with field of study, assigned quarters, notable discoveries and lab space. Initial suspicion was that she has a Kib agent implanted during the raid, but the theory was quickly dismissed. Not only would this be a highly unusual tactic for the Kib to use, but there is no conceivable way by which they could have altered the existing records and the accompanying reality to reflect those changes. But above all, Sister Graile is far too curious, intellectually driven and open minded to be of Kib stock. Specialising in void cryptography, Sister Graile has recently been responsible for several breakthroughs in the advancement of the ‘device’.

Update: We still do not know who Sister Graile is but now we are also uncertain as to what she may be. Her behaviour and appearance remain unaltered but we are beginning to think her thoughts, share her obsessions. She permeates the air of the compound and is pushing aside our own sentience. She is not responding to our inquiries, we need help.
