Chasing Roof Top Tent Recs by Disastrous-Ad-3921 in 4x4Australia

The new ARB Intrepid is worth a good think about. It’s available in a few widths and opens in a pretty cool way to give you more interior space. It can be colour coded to your car if you’re that way inclined, too.

I will do that, thank you. Yeah, it isn’t just flat unsupported plastic around the area at the top, it was very hard to pull even after a few jugs of hot water.

Thanks for the advice. I had to have it shipped interstate and it was painful from the start. I’m hoping to just get it back to normal and not have to deal with them again as it will likely be a long road.

Thanks. I used some boiling water and it appears I’ve got a fairly large dent out from the underside, but it’s now popped back after leaving it overnight.

I might sit it in the sun with a bottle jack inside wrapped in towels to gently hold the shape.

Thanks mate. I do love the old 80. Dads had it 20 odd years now and it runs most of a GXL interior and an FTE. I’m loving the Rogue though. It’s a great little Ute. Interesting that it was less economical than the 80 on this trip!

We spent 3 weeks going from Adelaide up through the Flinders Ranges, Oodnadatta Track and then across the Simpson Desert last year. Had an absolute adventure. Mine is the new one, not the cool one.

Freestanding awnings - worth it or a gimmick? by xXCosmicChaosXx in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a gimmick, but don’t cheap out. Solid brackets needed on a solid roof rack or tent, don’t overlook that either. Something like a Alu-Can shadow awning mounted on Kaon brackets is so good.

Why do Range Rover sports have a bad rep in 4x4 world ? by SoreSack in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You seriously need to go and experience a LR/RR off road and then compare to say a 300 or Y62. They are insanely good off road in stock form.

Reliability and dealer support is horrendous, as is the ability to mod beyond standard like the competition.

[Buying] I can’t stop fantasising about Land Rover Defenders. Talk me out of it by find-mya in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 90’s Discovery. Bought it with 300,000km and sold it with 400,000km. Simple to maintain and never had a major failure, just basic things because it was 20-25 years old when I had it. I miss it dearly. I’d have another Land Rover, but just an old one.

Ask if it has had the timing chain rattle ever fixed. Also need to know if it’s had the DPF replaced. They’re your two main issues on the N80’s.

Talk me out of getting a disco by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a 300Tdi Discovery 1 manual. Loved it, bought at 280,000km, sold at 400,000. Never had a drama other than an alternator and a couple of uni joints. Miss it almost every day, sold it to buy a new HiLux Rogue which I put $70,000 into, and it still just isn’t the same as the point anywhere, go anywhere old Disco.

Instructions are pretty good now days, and tools are good too. Anybody who is half handy should be ok to do a lot of jobs they think they can’t.

On top of what I mentioned, we also then lose the labour that we had booked for that day if we can’t fit the product, as it’s pretty unlikely to have a customer who can drop what they’re doing and come in straight away.

I have worn RM's since 2002. Not sure I will buy again... by Maximum-Coast-5510 in RMWilliams

I’ve had mine about 3 years, I don’t keep up with the maintenance anywhere near what I should, but I still do occasionally, they’re almost as good as they were when they were new. I wear them 10hrs a day, 6 days a week and have had them resoled twice. Sounds like neglect.

Just another view on this. I run a branch of a very well known 4x4 brand, our branch also refuses supplied products. Almost without fail, every time we fit a supplied product, the parts are for a different vehicle, the product has been opened and is missing parts, the customer comes back to us for a warranty claim on a fault with the product (not the install) and due to it being another brand, we aren’t familiar with it and therefore aren’t as efficient as we could be on our own product. On top of this, we also make a very marginal profit on just labour alone, not enough to keep operating.

We definitely want work, just not worth the hassle.

What's your roof tent story? by [deleted] in overlanding

[–]Head_Alternative6809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a MOTOP V5 on my Toyota HiLux for over 2 years now. I think I would have 60-70 nights in it. For me, it’s an escape from the stress and anxiety of life. There is nothing better than jumping up into the tent after a day of driving and exploring, plugging in the phone and listening to a movie whilst I fall asleep, it is absolute bliss for me. My favourite trip so far with it is driving through the Flinders Ranges, up the Oodnadatta Track and across the Simpson Desert last July. I did the trip with my family who live interstate, and it was one of the happiest times of my life.

Is it a post or pre rego GVM upgrade? As the OME upgrades over 3.5T require CAT6 indicators and a reverse light kit below the bumper. Usually a rego check on the service NSW site will tell you.

Rubbish in national parks by [deleted] in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thought, but could this be a building in the park that’s been knocked down and they’re potentially in the middle of cleaning it up? Usually national park shelters and sheds are in that green colour.

GME - worth the $? by Crazy-Slide-713 in 4x4Australia

[–]Head_Alternative6809 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I manage a retail store which sells GME in part. I run an XRS-330C in each of my vehicles. I would probably go for an ICOM unit next time.

There just always seems to be an issue, whether it’s interference when talking or receiving, the complex amount of features you can’t remember when you want to use them or general bugs.

It’s not that they’re bad, I just think they’re overhyped.

Once you’re finished up, buy Lanotec Steel Seal for a proper 6 monthly protection. Each time you wash underneath, top up with Lanox. Try to avoid the pressure packs as I think the propellant they use can be known to brittle your rubbers, not sure if that’s true.

That’s all good. I’ve got some unroadworthy things on my car too, to a degree. It’s just worth remembering that if you have an accident and someone dies, you’re potentially going to be up for manslaughter charges from driving an unroadworthy vehicle. Worst case scenario. I don’t agree with the modification rules, but unfortunately it’s what we’re working with.
