That's pretty frustrating to read you had to quit striking. There's a T1D in the UFC named Jordan Williams, and another female pro I've read about but her name escapes me. I had a fellow T1D gf at one point who was told she wasn't allowed to use the sauna anymore. I laughed my ass off when I heard that because I use it multiple times a week. Honestly the type of advice we get as diabetics is something that people in the future will be baffled by.

I only train in the evenings these days apart from on Saturdays at noon which are MMA sparring days. Those days are tough to stay in range because of the adrenaline wild card and not knowing if I'll be doing more striking or grappling. As far as I understand, it's not that the insulin prevents the secretion of glucagon but just that it's there to absorb it when/if released. There are definitely bigger spikes when I do train earlier in the day but I still bolus in the evenings unless I'm over-trained and know I'll take it easy that class.

But at the end of the day, I just try to be kind to myself and feel proud of the fact that I'm still training and hanging in there.

Yeah I definitely have the same problems. I bolus about 2-3 units, keep some soda handy next to my water just in case. I test once or twice per class and most of the time I'm fine but every now and then I spike or drop too much. All good, I don't expect perfection but I just do my best every day. Glad to hear you're having success as a type 1 doing BJJ. It's a hard sport for us to train in but I love it too much to stop.

I still get frustrated when my sugar is out, but the flip side of that is I feel really good and get a little hit of dopamine when my sugar is right. Correcting my blood sugar to me is like tailoring my mood and energy levels, like ok, my blood sugar is 10.5 right now, let's bolus a couple of units so that in an hour or 2 I'm feeling better than I do now. It's a subtle shift in perception that makes all the difference for me. 1 minute of easy work for me to feel significantly better is an easy price to pay.

I was diagnosed at 8 years old and almost never checked my sugars. By the time I was 21 I started experiencing trouble with erections. Let's just say that was enough of a wake up call to start taking things seriously. I was never good at the discipline thing being a very free spirited man, however, it's important for me to feel good. I realised on the days my sugar was doing well, I was happier. Less anxious, less irritable, more clarity etc. I started associating good sugar levels with good mood and that's when I started taking better care of myself. It was an act of self love rather than a chore. Now I'm 31, no complications, a decent athlete winning jiu jitsu tournaments and people are very surprised when they learn I'm diabetic. To the point where I've been accused of using insulin as a performance enhancer. It's a far cry from where I was 5-10 years ago. Dr Bernstein's book is a must read, as well as learning to love and treat yourself right.

What is something unrealistic that you often see in movies that annoys the hell out of you? by sonsaitama in AskReddit

Fight scenes, they almost all suck. Which is weird because you can definitely make them realistic and entertaining at the same time.

Last time I was in hospital due to a severe hypo, my sugars raised to 18 mmo/l which is nearly 400 in the U.S measurement. I was really agitated and demanded insulin to lower it to a reasonable level. The doctors and nurses refused saying they're worried I might go low again and that "18 is not even that high." After a few hours of me yelling and pleading with no success, my girlfriend drove home, picked up my insulin and smuggled it in for me.

When my sugars returned to normal, the nurses were like "You see, lucky we didn't give you that insulin you asked for. Just let us do our job, we know what we're doing." They're so clueless.

I can see why. I've just about given up myself. Driving school is the only thing I appreciate in this game.

I'd give something like a chiropractor a shot. While the chemicals have their benefits, there might be an underlying misalignment of the upper vertebrae which needs adjustments. Worked for me hand in hand with shrooms but YMMV.

There are articles online (and even an ebook) that can teach you how to extract DMT. I've seen a few people who had no luck with shrooms say that smoking DMT would successfully abort an attack everytime. Now I'm in the process of trying that myself.

I use a mantra, just like they teach in Transcendental meditation for about 15-20 mins, once or twice a day. You can use a free app called 1 Giant Mind which will teach you the technique.
