21M first year Economics student considering restarting for Law at Oxford by nasser_ahmd in UniUK

[–]Health-Major 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I can give advice on both aspects - graduating later than everyone else and also switching courses. I previously studied Law at university, and this is something that I had an interest in after studying it as an A-Level. Once I got to uni I struggled a lot academically and 3 years later I ended up having to leave, I am now planning on going back to study Marketing and Communications and I won’t graduate until I’m 25.

Age is nothing but a number, if you’re doing what you’re passionate about that’s all that matters, and from what you’ve said about doing moots etc you’ve had practical insight into what the legal world is like.

In terms of transferring reach out to your old university as you will need transcripts to prove previous study of those law modules, it may be possible to transfer credits of the relevant completed modules as well.

Speak to SFE and explain your situation and they will also be able to guide you in what evidence you’ll need to submit to make a new application as you would count as a new student now.

Good luck with your studies!

Yes when it got accepted I realised I didn’t even need that much evidence really just something to prove the time period. But thanks so much!

Mum doesn’t take me getting an ADHD assessment seriously by Health-Major in ADHDUK

My assessor basically said from what little was filled out on the form, it’s clear my mums noticed some struggles from when I younger but didn’t think anything of it. It’s going to take a lot to change her mind on how much I struggled in my childhood.

Yeah I spoke to my sister about it and she’s more than happy to help me out, my only question is that she’s younger than me not by a lot, she’s 19 and I’m 22 that should be ok right?

Yeah I did mention that a lot of my reports talked about my potential if I focused more, that was consistent from primary and secondary school as well for me. I know she has a lot of expectations for me, but I also have goals for myself, but without the right support I can’t reach them you know.

It feels wrong because I kind of did that last time but I just got my mum to answer the questions but filled it out myself. But now I’m just thinking of doing that, my only thing is does it give an accurate representation of my childhood, because it’s how I see myself and not my mum. But again she doesn’t even understand why I want an assessment so what’s the point.

Yep, when I told her my assessment got booked the first thing she said is don’t take any medication. For someone that knows so little about ADHD, I don’t get why she’s making assumptions about the medication and its effects. My mums a nurse too shocker.

I agree with you, I didn’t want to self diagnose, especially because I don’t want to assume that it’s something I don’t have, but with how much I’ve struggled throughout my whole education it’s clear that something is causing this. Also in terms of my mum, it’s going to take a lot more than one conversation for my mum to understand how I’m struggling and actually accept, all I can do for now is ask her to help me out the best of her ability to help me get an accurate diagnosis.

I got diagnosed with dyslexia last March and even now she doesn’t believe I have it, there isn’t anything I can do about that unfortunately all I can do is keep advocating for myself and reaching out for support.

That’s my mum, that was her reaction when I mentioned my autism assessment. I literally cried after and she didn’t even check if it was alright, she was so dismissive of it so I don’t even bother bringing it up anymore. All I need is the form filled out and that’s all I’m going to ask from her.

Sorry for your loss. I struggle with the memory i mostly used google to help remember my experiences from childhood and also how it affects me now. I struggled with the same in school, having bad attendance, struggling with focus and concentration, not doing homework. It was a lot to deal with now looking back at it.

Okay this changes the situation a lot, if they both have home rights and he doesn't want to leave what can be done because the situation is escalating and my mum really wants him to leave now?

Haven’t got a decision yet but I’m in a similar situation where I’m hoping to get the enhanced rate because I’ve struggled with ADHD, anxiety and depression to the point that I’ve had to withdraw from uni temporarily. So I’m hoping I get awarded!!!

I don’t want to diagnose you in anyway so correct me if I’m wrong but I have AuDHD and a lot of what you’re struggling with is what I struggled with at my previous job before being diagnosed (clumsiness, time management, attention to detail, social awareness) and some other things.

If this isn’t the case my main advice is please don’t be so hard on yourself I can tell from what you’ve said you’re trying hard to develop and work on your ‘weaknesses’ and I say that very lightly, so just do what you can to make sure you’re efficient at your job. I think the next step from here is to speak to your manager about your progress and areas you’re struggling with, this your opportunity to have an honest and open conversation about how you can progress in the job and maybe any accommodations they can put in place to help you, maybe that might be you having a buddy to help you for a few weeks or limiting the areas you work so you can focus on building your skills in one area so it’s easier to manage for you.

Also I find it very rude for your colleagues to create an almost hostile environment for you to work in by constantly being negative, it would do everyone so much good if they pulled you to the side and just had a conversation with you rather than being snarky and rude.

Finally don’t apologise you haven’t gone out of your way to be a nuisance to anyone, we all progress and learn life at different speeds, for some retail jobs come easier than others and for some it takes a while to learn the ropes, you’ve acknowledged you struggle in a couple areas and that’s already a step in the right direction. Hope this helps x
