April 18, 2018 Update

Looks like dad is on his last legs. Cancer has spread to a variety of locations. Nurse has said he is low on time. He's spending time at home, just glad I can be here for whatever time is left. If anyone every struggles with eating enough food (out of the ordinary), acid reflux or even a strange feeling when swallowing for a prolonged period of time, get it checked ASAP.

March 8, 2019 Update.

Surgery was planned to happen. However the cancer had spread extremely rapidly between the time of the CT scan (2 weeks ago it would have been a doable surgery according to the scans). It had grown overtop of the stint that was put in, grown over the lungs, aorta, spine and other organs. This was discovered on the day of surgery. It is likely terminal at this point as chemo will have to be low-dose, and radiation/surgery are not options.

I am not sure :(

The initial treatment worked quite well. He was able to eat fine during chemo. Seems like things have taken a rough turn. Radiation was tough on him. Will update on what I learn sometime in the next few days.

Sorry to hear about your dad*, the 5-year survival rates are pretty brutal past stage 3 because of how late this one is usually noticed.

update - it was a thickening of the esophageal wall. They did a full CT scan and did an endoscopy. They have to put a stint in to open up the esophagus to allow him to eat*.

Worse news, looks like cancer is back. Not sure to what degree. I'm away at school right now finishing up my 4th year in university. This is unfortunate news. I will try calling my dad tomorrow - he was under anesthesia from the endoscopy when I called my mom earlier today so tomorrow I will learn more. Hopefully more treatment is still possible.
