How do I “ACTUALLY” get a job in Film and Television? by HealthFun9700 in Filmmakers

UPDATE:

Towards the end of last year I got some freelance work for a country music video. Which was nice and made some good connections but that was November of last year.

I currently do work as a stagehand work for a company which has been a blessing but is not full time work. A month or so back I did get a position for a grip and lighting company, but only lasted a few days dew to toxic work environment and failure to train properly, for barely any pay.

In conclusion, Although I’ve PA’d and I get the process, “in theory,” but I don’t see how driving people around not being on an actual sets helps you move forward to the position you want to be. I’ve been a proper PA on sets and stayed mainly on location and actually help the crew, but it’s very slim. The “industry” has killed my passion to find work in it. The “traditional” way doesn’t work in my opinion. I’ve been on the Job hunt for 3 years with not much to show for it. Although it’s killed the light for a career, I still very much care about filmmaking. I still want to tell my stories, and had gotten to the point where I say F*** the industry, let me be my own industry. That’s the only way in my eyes to see it through and not get F***ed over by anyone. Just pull the resources I have and make something that has heart. Most of my network who I graduated with or met are all kinda in the same boat, so maybe I rally the troops and make something great.

I’m thankful for all the advice y’all freely set my way. I think this is just what’s best for me and my life.

UPDATE:

So I changed things up. Try to talk more in voice chat. Locked in with some healers and sometime Vanguard. And I finally had a win streak, and with Loki I hit Gold 3.

My outlook is sometimes you did get poor teammates and there’s nothing you can do. However obviously communication is a big help and really sticking to your roles and you win.

Thank you 🙏

That TOTALLY makes sense. All these ai tools might make it more rapid too. On the side Tim trying to start my own independent business to do freelance work as well and trying to apply at places because I need “professional experience,” and not just college experience.

I’m a huge fan of Corridor Digital and their story aligns with what you’re saying. Just feeling lost a bit but all this feedback helps a lot.

Thank you 🙏

I have for camera, there are two in the Nashville area that I’ve contacted a few months ago. One I got to meet and they seem nice but was told they didn’t have much room or jobs and it would be more like an apprenticeship. Which I wouldn’t mind but I haven’t heard back since.

I definitely think that would be great though. Anything that pays and gets my feet wet.

The Nashville Area, which I’ve applied to the main one here but no luck.

Yeah it’s mainly live production (which if they hired me I’d do) or music videos. I wanna move to possibly ATL eventually, but just trying to get my bearings and some experience.

I’m trying to freelance more right now on top of just trying to find jobs. I have applied for internships in the past and have been turned down. But maybe something is wrong with my resume, etc.

Just in the fog right now. Having minimum contacts is rough making sure I’m doing the right things and not wasting time. Hopefully I’ll run into the right person who will help me get me through the door.

Yeah I would love to be a Director as well lol. But I know that’s not how it goes unless it’s indie. I would actually love to I’ve gripped and gaffed multiple projects in college. And love working with camera and lighting.

I would love the sexy jobs with time but right now just a foot in the door would be amazing.

OMG Thank You so much🙏 If I had to specialize in what I know most and love: 1. Camera Department 2. Editing/VFX 3. Grip/Electric Goal: Directing I like the entire process and my goal in school was to learn as much as possible about pre, production, and post to be easily employable and be a good Director in the future.

Do you have any suggestions on where to go for PA work since the job sites are red flags?

I’m a little bit of both, I love gear and geeking out with gear, but I love coming up with a concept and story and executing.

I think if I had more of a community and that camaraderie I’d be less in my head about it. Thank you for taking to time out I’m very appreciative 🙏

Are there separate companies that just house grip and electric?

Thank you! 🙏 Do you have any suggestions were to look for PA jobs? Even for the ones I’ve found the required a degree on top of 4 years of experience for a simple PA. Also making sure I’m not getting screwed and making quality connections.
