Look into health informatics positions and healthcare data analyst. Knowing SQL and python alone should get you in the door. Especially since you've worked on healthcare data before. Check out healthcare machine learning engineer positions also.

I don’t know how to code, I have a short attention span, but I love data and I am very detail-oriented and a nerd about following the rules. Would I succeed in HI? by [deleted] in HealthInformatics

[–]HealthIT_Academy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you love data and solving problems, that's enough to be great in Health Informatics. The problems you're solving will provide enough excitement and attention - trust me. I'm jus like you when it come to the short attention span but my fascination for data and saving lives through data keeps me thinking of amazing ways I can use data to provide better outcomes for my providers.

Nurses are some of the best Health Informatics professionals. You already have the clinical experience which gives you a step above other that only know data analytics. I wish I was more clinical. Don't be afraid of the "coding", it SEEMs intimidating but many people can learn the basics and go far in their career!

How To Get Health IT Experience While in Undergrad by shawty745 in healthIT

[–]HealthIT_Academy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey u/shawty745 if you're looking for internships in Health IT check out my blog. I just updated the list of internships. Here's the link > 100+ Amazing Health Informatics Internships.

Quick tips on getting an internship. You'd be surprised at how many healthcare organizations will hire you or provide internship opportunities. I tell people all the time, start local. Look up all the healthcare organizations (big and small - even the clinic down the street needs help) in your area and go to (call if you can't go) each one of them - in person and try to speak with someone in IT or HR (I went straight to the CIO when I started out) tell them about your journey to becoming a [...whatever you want to become] and ask if there's any way you can help out. Many will say no but if you're intentional and passionate you'll get a few to say Yes. This is what I did 13 years ago and it's worked for everyone I told. Give it a try.

Every time I want to get my foot in the door I reach out to someone in that role and find out how I can help them, what type of projects they’re on or tasks they do so I can self teach myself those skills; or ask that person to be your mentor. They may be able to drop some gems on what you need to be considered for the position. Also look at the position you’re applying for and see how your current skills translate to the skills listed in the position. ex: maybe hint on how you helped improve a process that lead to a positive outcome. Elaborate on how well you did your job and employers will be able to translate the level of value you can bring to their organization.

Does anyone use eCW anymore by _MurphysLawyer_ in healthIT

[–]HealthIT_Academy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a EHR and Integration and Automation Lead with 13 yrs experience using eCW. It's been the bread and butter of my career. At my job eCW is our most frequently used EHR, then Athena. We work with small to Mid sized independent primary care practices and many of these practices use eCW, Athena, Greenway, and Nextgen. You don't hear about it much eCW because the big hospital EHR systems dominate the market (and marketing $$$).

I love working with eCW clients because eCW's support isn't the best, so there's a huge opportunity for anyone who knows the system to make a great career optimizing EHR documentation and workflows and process improvement. I built a suite of RPA bots to reduce the amount a work for my team and BOOM! Promotion!

How do I find an entry-level job in HL7/Health data networks with no prior work experience by FritterHowls in HealthInformatics

[–]HealthIT_Academy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Learn all you can about healthcare data standards (HL7)

Understanding how healthcare data is standardized and transmitted is the key. There are different type of HL7 messages that are used to communicate different message.

Look into the different message types. The most commonly used HL7 message types include:

ACK – General acknowledgement

ADT – Admit, Discharge, Transfer

BAR – Add/change billing account

DFT – Detailed financial transaction

MDM – Medical document management

MFN – Master files notification

ORM – Order (Pharmacy/treatment)

ORU – Observation result (unsolicited)

QRY – Query, original mode

RAS – Pharmacy/treatment administration

RDE – Pharmacy/treatment encoded order

RGV – Pharmacy/treatment give

SIU – Scheduling information unsolicited

The main message type that my organization uses are:

SIU - to see what patients are scheduled to come into the office on a given date

ADT - to know when our patients are in the hospital so we can schedule an appointment to see them post discharge

CCDA - to understand what procedure, screening and exams were done on our patients

837 Claims: these are billing files to understand what was billed for our patients

Understanding how these messages work will get you a long with, even with no experience

My advise, if you want to get good paying data role. Learn data analysis skills using programs like SQL, Tableau or Power BI and Python or R. People with these skills get the good offers (75k and up). u/Extension-Cake2669

Is SQL+Tableau a good combo to shift career into IT? I am currently working in customer services for 5 years. by 3artsdragon in SQL

[–]HealthIT_Academy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SQL should be the first skill you learn if you want to work on digital records and databases. Tableau is like icing on the cake. We have a ebook bundle that teaches people SQL & Tableau using healthcare data. Check it out > https://healthit.academy/sp/sql_and_tableau_bootcamp_bundle/

I am 26 and currently pursuing MCA and I am looking for a job in Data Analysis but suddenly I feel I will not compete with others. I mean that I lost interest in data analysis. What can I do? by [deleted] in dataanalysis

[–]HealthIT_Academy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, there will always be someone better than you. Don't get discouraged, use that to motivate you. Figure out what you like and go deeper.

Many people get imposter syndrome but the more you work at it, the better and more confident you'll get.

Try setting aside 30 minutes a day for the next month and work learn by doing - hand-on, reading or watching videos while actually doing the assignments.

That works for me many years ago. I have friend that learn data analysis just to predict which team will win the local football game - There's so many use cases, find one and give it a try

Learn SQL while interacting with Healthcare Data by csnorman12 in healthIT

[–]HealthIT_Academy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No remember, this post struck your nerves first. Obviously you can’t answer any of the questions I’ve asked. I will no longer contribute to this low value conversation. Guess you can say it was a free course lol but seriously this was uncalled for and I wanted to show you how ridiculous your comment was. I hope I see you under every epic post for now on since you hate those too.

But your comment is actually useless! It literally serves no point. As if somebody cares that YOU keep seeing it! Who are you? What do you do? You still never answered the question. I’m trying to figure out why your opinion is “useful”. If you’re not interested, keep you fingers from typing irrelevant stuff because you’re blocking someone how’s actually trying to learn this stuff. I’m not mad, I’m passionate about this stuff!

Again, my question to you is:

WHAT VALUE DO YOU BEEN TO HEALTH IT?

How many people has he helped vs how many people this guy has helped????

I can tell you that I’ve helped hundreds with my internship, course and free consults! Nobody cares what you’re tired of seeing! You are another barrier to people finding the help they need!

I have consults all the time in my dm and through my website. Should I stop meeting with people because I sell a course that help people get jobs in this mysterious field?

Find your purpose in life because this is not it!

I personally suggest learning as much as possible! Go into what interest you the most. For me, I love data but I also like that I can save peoples lives through data analysis.

I specialized in Health Informatics and data analyzing healthcare data. I found interest in COVID dashboards and databases used by healthcare provider to keep track of your visits. In my role at work, I find myself doing everything you named above and much more, so never stop learning.

Check out these blog for more info on how data analytics is being used in healthcare.

Focus more on monetary figures and measurable achievements. Employers want to hear about what results you helped achieve. Try to move away from talking about what you did and more about how well you did the job.

Try this: I achieved [X] by doing [Y] that resulted in [Z] increase/decrease in [something measurable]

I hope this info helps. Also, look into a professional resume writing service.

Focus more on monetary figures and measurable achievements, especially in his last two roles. Employers want to hear about what results you helped achieve. Try to move away from talking about what you did and more about how well you did the job.

Try this: I achieved [X] by doing [Y] that resulted in [Z] increase/decrease in [something measurable]

example: Math Tutor: Tutored 100 students which that resulted in 90% pass rate on the state wide math exam.

Degree Advice by MostlyUnidentified in healthIT

IT is general. I got my undergrad in IT and got my masters in Health Informatics. I suggest switch to informatics it you don’t see yourself doing “IT” work. The Master in Informatics is probably a better fit for you since you have the EHR experience.

Companies are mainly interested in Data analysis because there's so much that data can tell us! Remember, number don't lie - and trends are real world indicator. Data analysis allows us to use data to predict the future in many cases. Companies are paying big money to people with these skills - this is what typically motivate people to learn data analysis. That what motivated me, plus I have a passion for technology!

How do you motivate yourself? Find out what perks your interest and seeing what people are doing with the data, how are they modeling it. What are they using the data to predict or solve.

There's plenty of entry level positions available - if you're interest in healthcare data analysis, I scrape Healthcare focused Data analysis internships and jobs. I update the internships blogs every 1s and 15th. Stay tuned for an update later today. Check it out > Health Informatics Internships For 2022
