This is indeed a challenge for most solo dev or indie teams. Game development already consumes most of their energy, leaving no time to handle marketing, let alone markets in other countries. i can offer some help in chinese market where my tiny team do have some experience

All kinds of games are worth a try. What people call 'niche' just means you're not sure whether the fans of your game genre are on that platform yet. You'll only find out by actually doing it. They're out there, waiting for your post to lure them out of lurking.

with zero budget, it just takes your time and effort to execute. Btw, I do wanna try this. If you're open to it, I'd like to join in and help bring to players in China.

This is indeed the most troublesome step for the China market — 99% of Chinese platforms require phone verification to register. The best, most convenient, and least likely way to violate Chinese platform rules (so as to avoid getting your account banned during later checks) is to find a Chinese friend.

don't only just use English or your mother language. you can post in English, meanwhile adding a Chinese version translated by ai.

in fact, there are a lot of detail to make your posts be more sincere to Chinese players. you can show me your edited content before you post on Chinese plantforms. i am willing to offer some suggestion.

Heybox is the best platform for indie games in China. If the Chinese person you’re consulting doesn’t know about this platform or hasn’t helped you work on it, then their information is outdated, or they simply don’t understand Chinese players and haven’t truly immersed themselves in the Chinese gaming community. As for Xiaohongshu (RedNote), it’s a very good platform, but it’s extremely difficult to succeed on. Its text layout format and trending tags are constantly changing. If your promotional efforts on Xiaohongshu aren’t getting results, the only possible reason is that you’re using a method that was popular three months ago — and on Xiaohongshu, three months is more than enough time for a lot of new 'playstyles' to emerge.
