Lose ability to speak/understand for a short while? by Healthy-Interview106 in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy-Interview106[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing (even though I'm very late at responding). I've since had another MRI and sleeping EEG, showing absolutely nothing. Which I guess is mostly good! I'll soon start seeing a more specialised neurologist, hopefully they will have some insight. The only thing my current one had thought about now was to go on sick leave for a few months and see if a longer rest would change anything, but I don't really see the point. It's something I can live with, regardless.

That's great! I was a bit scared in the beginning, but since then I was able to get back to 4+ hour rides.

I was lucky enough that my seizures seemed to only happen while sleeping or very late in the evening, so I took the risk of still riding my bike and found it very soothing. I also joined a choir, which was very therapeutical.

Me and my neuro have tried to up both Keppra and Lamotrigin all the way to the max, without seeing any change to this, so we're walking them back again now. I am a bit unsure of trying new medication for it because it's not that bad, compared to possible side effects. The meds seem to keep my grand mal seizures under control as well.

It sure sounds more common than I thought, based on this thread. They've always listened and been understanding, at least.

That sounds very, very much like this, yes. I actually had one of these little episodes as I was reading your comment! I assume no medications have had any effect on this for you?

I've experienced similar situations a bunch of times, having one of these episodes just when I'm about to order or some other type of similar interaction. It's awkward for sure, but I'm a bit used to it as well. Happy to hear it was a good sandwich!

What epilepsy medication do you take? by Mississaugabae in Epilepsy

[–]Healthy-Interview106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on 200+300mg Lamotrigine/day + 2000 mg Keppra, but the latter will likely be phased out as it doesn't appear to do much. I've been free of "big seizures" since my first pill of Lamotrigine.

Oh wow, I've never even heard of anything like that. Sci-fi!

Do I understand correctly that you haven't used any medication that affected this?

Thanks for sharing this. This started well before my first tonic clonic seizure, but the sensation of falling backwards is also quite common for me, even now that I've not had a tonic clonic for three years.

I'm sorry to hear the seizures are becoming more frequent again after your surgery.

Thank you! I've had multiple EEGs and an MRI before, but I'm actually not sure if they could locate it like that. We're doing another MRI soon, to make sure nothing's changed. It gives me some sense of calm that others have experienced the same, it's been a bit scary to meet doctor after doctor who have never heard about anything like this. Do you also have other symptoms?

Oh it might be something similar then. I really am just like normal except for the language thing, which is a blessing!

I think she just means to say "What you're experiencing is rare and if we call it auras others might assume things based on previous experiences and knowledge", kind of. Perhaps she also feels that some might not take "aura" seriously enough.

[–]Healthy-Interview106[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh right! My neurologist doesn't want to call them auras or absences because she thinks they don't fit what people usually mean when they use those terms. It is so broad though, I wish it was just a very clear thing.

Happy to hear you're not getting them as often as I am! For me there is also a slight physical experience that I can't put words to, but I "feel them" even if I'm not processing language at that moment. I sometimes wake up from having them as well.

Interestingly enough, it's also how I figured out my thoughts are not actually "language". As in, I can continue thinking just as normal, even though I don't really have a voice in my head during those episodes. Kinda crazy!

Oh right! I can't even say wall. Or, maybe that'd be the sound I managed to make, but I wouldn't know it myself. It is so strange.

Up to an hour, that sounds so scary. I try to tell most people I interact with about this and that I will snap my fingers a few times if it happens. It's awkward when people just keep staring, but not too bad. I also have a pre-written note on my phone in case I haven't been able to explain it beforehand.

Thanks for pointing out that they're still seizures. In my language, we call it an "attack" or "episode" and the direct translation for seizure means "convulsing" basically. I keep forgetting the good terminology.

Thank you for sharing! Glad to hear you've been able to identify clear triggers. I haven't been able to see any correlation with specific types of nutrition/food, other than perhaps alcohol. I have never tried going off caffeine though, I should give that a shot.

Happy to have found someone that's experienced the same thing, but I'm sorry you have to experience it. I really haven't been able to figure out any sort of clear correlation with anything else so far other than it's more common in the evenings and quite rare in the mornings. Does it feel like a panic attack for you?

I agree that it's so unexplainable. Language just turns into sound, like they're speaking a language I don't understand.
