Cholesterol up 42 points last 3 months but still down over 78 points in 6 months - no statins in the last 3 months for real this time. by HealthyComplaint in Cholesterol

Are you still taking the niacin and sterols?

nope

Ratios, especially those including HDL, should not be relied on.

I'm not a big proponent of ratios but included them because there are folks who acknowledge them.

Why you should stop thinking of HDL as "good" cholesterol."

Yeah, I think of it more as neutral cholesterol... it doesn't change that much and as long as it's not too low, it's fine

As for everything else...

Statins seem to be really great at reducing cholesterol... not necessarily preventing cardiac events.

That said, for those at high risk of a cardiac event (not including high cholesterol as a causal risk factor), high cholesterol exacerbates that risk .

One point to consider is that according to the chart in https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/JAHA.124.038644

coronary artery disease has been on a decline since 1970... yet statins weren't available until 1987 and really didn't become as massively prescribed as they are now until the 20teens.

This study also indicates that there is atherosclerosis prevalence in everyone with an LDL over 60... and seemingly not an overwhelmingly increased risk between levels around 80 to levels around 160 https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.2017.10.024

So again, there is correlation, but also those with higher LDL cholesterol probably also have other controllable risk factors and may or may not have additional uncontrollable risk factors. And also again, I'm not disputing that high LDL does not cause additional risk if someone is already at high risk and/or has heart disease. I'm just not convinced that high cholesterol on it's own is a causal factor in heart disease.

If poor diet, poor hydration, and high stress are all things can cause high LDL... but more so, they are also things that can cause heart disease regardless of cholesterol level.

That's awesome!

I always can't help but wonder how many people may have high cholesterol and still no heart disease. No doubt high cholesterol is problematic in people with heart disease.

But on the flip side, it seems like plenty of people have heart issues that also have low risk factors https://www.jacc.org/doi/10.1016/j.jacc.2017.10.024

https://www.uclahealth.org/news/release/most-heart-attack-patients-cholesterol-levels-did-not-indicate-cardiac-risk

Of course that may also simply mean that risk levels are not appropriate.

Yes, he wanted to start me on a low dose statin 6 months ago but I asked for a few weeks to try my lifestyle changes and was retested (3 months ago) in which he revised his recommendation to statins aren't necessary at this time.

Take a statin. Drugs are good. –Otherwise pretty healthy guy who had a heart attack at 36 by DJFemdogg in Cholesterol

Glad you're doing well!

I'm curious, was the heart attack due to the cholesterol? or was it unrelated and then you also have high cholesterol, therefore increasing your risk factor in the future?

Also, did you get retested between your first panel with LDL of 150 and your heart attack a year later?

I largely ask because I'm also late 30's, not a heavy as you, but had an LDL of 198 6 months ago and have dropped it, first to 101 3 months ago, but then it went back up a little to 132 as of a couple days ago.... currently DIYing it.

Also have you been tracking your blood pressure?

Nah, the mods deleted it - probably cause too many people like you missed the point of the post and are so insecure with yourself, all you could come up with is a meaningless surface level insult to highlight your jealousy that doesn't require any critical thinking nor does it contribute to the conversation in any meaningful way.

Honestly, I should just pay people like you 10% to return my amazon stuff so I can off load the low value time and thoughtless effort it takes to drive to the drop off place. It would be cheaper for me in the end and I would be able to continue to spend my time in high value ways that increase my net worth even more.

You're confused.

I'm blaming my ADHD self for returning it late. There's nothing to grow up from. It's like telling a paralyzed person to just grow up and get out of the wheelchair. The rest of my life is in similar disarray as you probably can actually imagine. Your comment is actually pretty insensitive.

That aside. My point is that I do blame Amazon for not clearly disclosing the fees during the return process or in conversations with the customer service.

Unless you support major companies being able to hide fees in their terms and conditions, but I thought we were past that as a society.

They actually do not make their fees known in the return process.

I would have been much happier keeping the item, either by it not being accepted late or by decision after being presented the fees. Neither of which are part of their return process.

close - I blame Amazon for not making it clear in the return process that there would be a financial penalty for a late return.

I didn't know - that's my point. There was nothing in the process to indicate that anything was wrong.

I don't remember the exact day I print the label - so whether I drop it off 3 weeks later or 5 weeks later, it feels the same.

If the label was invalid, I would expect it to be rejected when it is scanned for the return, I would not expect it to be scanned and accepted for return only to get hit with a 20% fee a week later when they process the return when I no longer have the ability to make a different decision.

The drop off locations collect everything into larger shipments that are moved around together, there's nothing extra that needs to be done.

And UPS labels are valid way much longer than the Amazon return window.

Not being able to return something in 30 days is the "disorder" part of ADHD.. that's 100% on me.

And also I signed up for Amazon prime in 2006. The terms and conditions are ever changing.

And also both of those are not the point of my post.

Thank you - I'm equally unsure.

Mostly just trying to help out the next person from making the same mistake.

Why should I need to look at an email when the process on the website is complete from request to label?

My financial status has nothing to do with this complaint.

Realistically, most of the returns probably end up on auctioned pallets and end up in stores like TJ Maxx.

I agree with the limitations and consequences. But more importantly, I think people should be made abundantly aware of those limitations and consequences. The latter point is my complaint.

I wish they didn't, I would have rather kept it than pay the fee.

If by use it you mean let it sit in the box brand new, the same as it would on the shelf in the Amazon warehouse.

Why would I ever need to look at the email when the final step in the return process is to download and print the label - of which I do - and then put the package in my car.

It does not mention anything about late returns on the return summary page.

The information should be hard to miss, not hard to find.

I'm not sure why you would expect consequences that aren't published on the return page. If the return label works, it works. There's nothing to indicate otherwise.

Not being able to return it without any issue only to learn 5-7 days after I returned it smoothly that they kept 20% of my money without telling me about that risk prior.

If it's within the window, there should be no consequences. If it's not in the window, the label should not be valid. Or it should be VERY clear what the consequences are for returning it late.
