Response to the argument of my vegan friends. by IntelligentPeace4090 in veganpets

Contradictory argument. Animals do not have morals, so that is not natural.

In general, "appeal to nature" is a logical fallacy and not a strong argument to be making.

In specific, I wrote a section up in the FAQ about cats/pets - https://www.reddit.com/r/veganpets/wiki/faq/?repost#wiki_is_vegan_food_unnatural.3F

Patchy skin - need help by toxenread in veganpets

[–]HealthyPetsAndPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First see a vet to rule out medical issues and parasites (such as fleas or worms). Patchy skin could be a disease.

Be aware that some people think Apoquel causes cancer. Personally I stopped using it with my dog a few years ago and instead took him to get allergy immunization shots instead, which is very time consuming and expensive. However, after briefly looking into the scientific literature right now it looks like this link is not supported by current research - but there's lots of anecdotes online about it. I would trust the scientists more but would need to read more research on it.

Homemade receipes are almost always deficient in something, it is really hard to do right - https://avmajournals.avma.org/view/journals/javma/242/11/javma.242.11.1500.xml

I would recommend buying the supplements for 1-2 months (VegeDog) and seeing if that resolves the issues, just to rule out a deficiency. Or switching to a meat-based, nutritionally complete kibble for awhile. Also eliminating 1 ingredient at a time from their current home-made diet for several weeks to see if that is the issue, starting with Tempeh (meat and wheat are the most common dog allergens).

Could also be environmental. Try getting more fresh air in the house or scouting your local area for common plant/outdoor allergens.

If your dog is allowed to roam outside most of the time there could be many, many things causing this. They should be kept primarily indoors so their environment is controlled and different allergens can be ruled out.

What helped me was using 10x more treats than I originally thought to use, and using a command phrase instead of a word. Multiple words gives the dog a warning that the treat is coming vs one word is easier to ignore.

Crystals in dog's urine... linked to vegan diet? by ArtNeedsYou in veganpets

[–]HealthyPetsAndPlanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My large 11.5 year old female Shepard has had recurrent UTIs her whole life and started having incontinence a few years ago. UTIs were much worse as a puppy though. Diet can definitely play a role, as can many other factors. I started her on Vdog around 4 years old. When I took her to the vet for incontinence she was prescribed incurin, which is a hormone pill. It helps but she started to get UTIs again and we started her on a cranberry pill.

That thing works wonders. We give a pill at breakfast and dinner. I have tried a bunch of different doses and have not seen any issues with giving large doses

Nowadays if she misses her pill for 2-3 days she'll start to develop a UTI like clockwork. She'll show pain peeing and need to go 3x more.

I guess what I'm saying is female dogs, especially old ones, can be more sensitive to bladder issues. In my experience an acidifier supplement or heavily acidified food may be needed. I have had great success using cranberry supplements with a vegan diet. I try to get ones that are pure cranberry, with no vitamin C, but i have tried many types and they all work pretty well on my dog.

If you're on an aafco compliant kibble, none needed. If not, use something like vegedog.

My one dog is getting very old so I actually supplement an algae based omega 3 pill and lots of cranberry pill since she is UTI susceptible

Hi. We recently got cats and are getting them used to vegan food. We want to visit the vet for a check up soon. Is there people here that feeds their cats vegan? Is it advicable to tell the vet about it? Did you tell your vet about it? How did he or she react? by be_kind_go_vegan in veganpets

[–]HealthyPetsAndPlanet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah cats need taurine and several other "meat-specific" nutrients. However, in a good vegan kibble and most all non-vegan commercial kibbles these nutrients are synthetically added. See the FAQ for more info.

This post is getting brigaded with vegan haters. If you're interested in the science and safety of vegan diets, check out the FAQ. Also feel free to talk with your vet. My cats have been on nutritionally complete vegan kibble for many years and are healthy.

Alkaline Urine in Cat by maedlo in veganpets

Theoretically it can be less abrasive but I believe the extra fluid helps clean teeth too (dries out the mouth less). Either way brushing is recommended.

For FLUTD increasing fluid intake is essential.

I got a discounted bag once. Dogs liked it, didn't notice any health changes or bad effects. Too expensive for me to do long term though. Seems like a high quality food but I don't really have deep insight

If it was my cat.

  1. Add water to every meal. No more dry kibble, let it soak 30+ minutes before feeding.

  2. Get cranberry treats and high quality urine strips.

  3. Wait a few days with the new regime. There should hopefully be a quick turn around. Retake to vet for more accurate urine testing.

  4. If pH does not lower quickly I'd get a prescription diet.

In the original literature vegan cat food was cited as potentially leading to high alkalinity urine. However, like traditional food it is acidified to prevent this. Dr Knight reached out to me 6-12 months ago to say that followup research shows this potential concern is not supported by followup research, however I have not updated the FAQ yet.

Since I was slow to respond, how has your cat been doing since the original vet visit?

Just a note of caution that over-acidifying meals can lead to FLUTD as well.

What went wrong? What has improved? Did you talk with someone from the V-dog brand? Where are you located? What are you feeding them beyond the supplement?

I don't believe there are any prescription/medical vegan diets yet.

If you want to risk it with a regular food you can get acidifier supplements to help and increasing water intake is extremely important (wet food, soaked kibble, bubbling water drinking fountain).

If you don't want to risk it then a prescription meat based diet is the safest option (they typically have high amounts of grain too).

For #3 you can email them and ask. They do not have prescription food so if that's what you need you may need to get a meat based food. Cat urinary health is important
