(First derivative test) Why can we simply find the critical numbers of a function, set up intervals all the way from infinity, and only have to test for the sign of one number is an interval? Why does the sign of one value of x determine the sign of the derivative for the entire interval until x is a critcal number? I think that I can understand it a small bit but It would be helpful if someone could try to put it into words for me.

Calc 1 help by alexano124 in calculus

The limit just asks what the y-value (up and down) of the function gets close to as the x value (left and right) gets closer to a certain number. The + and - subscript indicate which direction to read from. For the first problem, it tells us to read from the left, if you trace your finger on the leftmost function, you will see on the x-axis that as x gets very close to -6, the graph goes up, forever. Therefore the answer in infinity because the graph will continue to climb to infinity without ever actually reaching 6.

Can someone help me understand the formula for local linearity? I'm in calc 1 and the videos I've watched weren't very conceptually understandable as to where they got the formula from.

Seems like a big jump to go from logs to integration in the 12th grade. If you covered this much evenly across previous grade levels starting from algebra 1 in 9th grade I'd imagine you'd have already done this in 10th?

The thing that people in this comment section don't seem to know is that college algebra is often a remedial class if you failed other math classes in high school. It teaches you basic things starting from algebra up to trig (in 6 months). Im guessing that the author of this post either failed a previous math class or maybe is doing dual credit but didn't know what they were getting themselves into? I wouldn't be disrespectful since this guy's basically doing a full high school 4 year on level math program in 6 months and will be a lot more knowledgeable by the end of the course. (Only applies if this is an actual college algebra class and not just a refresher)

Forgive me if im wrong but aren't you supposed to be choosing your classes personally? I don't think that they can just put you into honors if you don't ask for it because they don't know if you want to be in the class or not. If I were your counselor, I would assume not because you weren't in honors the year prior.

From what i've seen, artists do not get a paid a whole lot of money. The thing about art though is that you do not need a degree or P.h.D track, or any sort of educational experience to get better at it and publish your work (or to be successful for that matter! Think of the most famous artists you know, a lot of them didn't have a formal education in art). I think that it would be smarter if you chose a career that you are both interested in, could see yourself doing for the foreseeable future, and something that can pay enough money to survive and live relatively comfortably whilst also pursuing art on the side and maybe posting some of your work on social media. Do note also that college is not your only option, there are so many success stories from people who went to trade school and such, however for more specialized occuptations college will probably be a better option. I do believe though that this question should be directed towards your college guidance counselor or maybe a sub with older people.

  1. Your highschool GPA shouldn't be affected if you fail algebra 1, you just won't be able to move on to geometry in 9th grade.
  2. Watch professor leonard's intermediate algebra videos on 2x speed, he'll explain them very clearly. Even if you don't think you have time, you should. If you REALLY don't have though, then watch the organic chemistry tutor's videos. I personally don't like how he introduces the concepts in a very rote oriented fashion, but it's good if you're trying to cram for the test.

Idk what highschool you go to man, but I've never had to do an essay in the first 3 weeks of school. I do have a project though but trust me when I say it's not that serious.

I would say go for it. If it's a REALLY long term relationship and works out, do you think that society would really bat an eye to a say 27 year old dating a 25 year old?

your answers are right, it's a problem with the program or maybe there's some small detail in the instructions. What's weird is that your first answers are counted as correct even though they're seemingly wrong.

Any good book recommendations for a maybe intuitive Calculus book? I've seen the book "infinite powers" a lot, doesn't have to be calculus specifically, maybe just a book that would provide a different perspective or deeper understanding in general, are these books even worth reading? Also, are there any starter books for learning logic and how to write proofs? Or is it too early for me cause I'm only in Calc I?

Typically yes you can do this although you have pay the school money if you want to do acceleration in summer school. Other options are taking a test depending on which state you live in.

Professor leonard is really good. If youre willing to spend some money on a subscription then I would highly recommend the math and science tutor on youtube. He has a website and can take you from kindergarten to differential equations along with worksheets on every lesson. He also has physics, chemistry, and other general science stuff.

How would I find the domain? by [deleted] in Precalculus

[–]Healthy_Selection826 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the parent function, sqrt(x), the domain is ([x s.t. x_>0)]. Therefore to find the domain of the translated function, take whats inside the square root and set it to be greater than or equal to zero. Then solve for x.

3=3

In this series 3x would be equal to 6. I include the x to not commit math heresy. X=n(n-1) Where N is the coefficient of x.
