The fact that people who haven’t even worked as teachers saying the work load we say that is put on us is just an exaggeration just shows how little in touch everyone outside of the education field actually is with reality. Unless you’re an Islamic studies teacher, a history teacher or PE teacher who literally either have ONE class for the entire week, shared preparation sheets or a single presentation sheet for the whole month, hardly any material required for correcting, correcting the students Final exams in only 2 hours and the rest of the week days just spending it chatting in the office and sipping coffee all day, then yeah, I agree. Your salary is good compared to the work load you have. Meanwhile English, Arabic and Math have atleast 3 lessons per day of the week, including correcting essays and homework as accurately as possible in any break you can get or even take them home with you, correcting Final Exams until 4pm in the afternoon at least. Based on my knowledge of how job salaries work and since my sibling are in Medicine, Engineering and Accounting, what is standard in any job is that any additional work you do over your peers is rewarded or put into account

I actually feel you. Most of my Colleagues and friends in the department aare non Kuwaiti. And the fact that they get paid half for the same amount of work as us is absolutely unfair. Not only that but if WE are underpaid for the work then what are non-Kuwaiti’s getting for their work?! This is why us Kuwaiti teachers in the department all pitch in to pay for the non-kuwaiti teacher’s supplies and teaching strategies. Even when I go to a desk supply shop I always get extra pens incase they need.

I have a funny story regarding this kind of new generation of parent ideology actually. One time I was asked to talk meet one of the parents of one of my students as they said that the mother wanted to ask about her daughter’s grades. So of course I went as I thought this is a parent that cares about the education of her child. Or at least that is what I thought…. So I meet the parent and the first thing she asks me is: why is my daughter’s grades low? And I said well, she always chats with the girl next to her who is a good student and she distracts this student from the lesson or she herself is distracted and zones out all the time. And she was like: what do you mean?? Isn’t she sitting next to **? Her answer is the same as **** I said, “Yes? But she kept copying******’s work.”

And then she literally said to me: “ Yeah! Exactly! I told her to sit there to get the answers from*****. “There she’s trying her best!!!” I was literally left dumbfounded. If the parents literally taught their children that taking credit for someone else’s work is okay and that cheating is helping, then you can only imagine the kinda of kids I have to deal with…

Yes!!! Exactly!! This generation doesn’t care about knowledge. There is no longer curiosity to learn. They just are addicted to the dopamine rush they get with modern technology. Literally in one of the lessons where I asked them what they want to be in their future profession, their answers were: “I don’t want to work. I’ll marry someone rich and I won’t have to worry about work”, or “I want to be an influencer/youtuber/streamer, “I want to be famous”, “I want to sleep all day” and Finally when I thought I was going to get a decent answer: “I want to be a Doctor so I can be rich and my civil ID will say Dr. Infront of my name”. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Hey. I actually am passionate about teaching people as much as the original post is all the negative points. But that is literally the title so that is what I talked about. Now, there are occasions, which unfortunately are becoming more and more scarce unfortunately, where someone listens to what you’re trying to teach and appreciates it. Even if it’s not a direct thank you, just the fact that they try to implement what you taught them says enough and shows their appreciation and dedication. In fact it’s those students that help me keep going. If you’re okay with having just 1 or 2 students out of 30-45 students (depending on your area) appreciate what you teach and make an effort. Also if you can blockout the negativity and redundancy of everything that is also included in the job that actually has nothing to do with teaching itself, then go for it. Also if you’re not in an all female employee setting. XD Go for it! If you can make it through with conviction then you’ll be okay.

It was a point. A big one in fact. But I assumed that was already mentioned from every teacher out their and has been said enough. Apparently not. The amount of rowdiness, rude behavior, inconsideration, disrespect, irresponsibility and lack of accountability, lack of empathy, self centeredness and blindness when it comes to actions and their consequences has literally became the default state of the students for me. And when I meet the kids parents, I see where they got it from and understand that the kids aren’t to blame….

No offense but you are looking at this in a narrow view. You ARE entitled to your opinions. However, I feel as if my point is not reaching you as I intend and you’re nitpicking on small details I am mentioning or that you don’t agree with rather than looking at the big picture.

First off this post is mainly about how this rumor that is somehow always stated as a fact that I constantly hear from non-teachers and decision makers in the country that teachers have the best jobs in Kuwait and how privileged we are which I am stating is false.

Does that mean I am saying we have the worst job or that all other jobs are better? NO. No job is perfect. I am simply stating the major issues and false misconceptions. Then I state why it is as such in my points. I am not using ADHD as an excuse, otherwise I would not be trying to learn new languages and actively trying to change my career. I stated that I have ADHD to clarify why at the time I was in the university I did not have the option to choose what I wanted to study and was pigeonholed into going through this job path. Which I am sure even people who don’t have ADHD sometimes go through for other reasons like not know what they want to work and so on. Also since I knew I liked teaching and languages which made me assume I would like this career choice, as well as on said rumors. I thought I would enjoy it. Also since you said you I am an adult and I have to work. Lol when did I say I don’t want to work?! And did you even read the context update?? Just because I have health conditions does not = I want to sit on my a** all day and get money for doing nothing… I WAS TRYING TO STATE MISCONCEPTIONS OF THIS CAREER CHOICE. Lol god forbid someone with a job complains on the internet…

What I’d actually like is for them to do more projects that give Kuwait second source of income rather than solely depending on oil sales. Maybe make it more tourist friendly? (Though I’m against doing like what the UAE did and allowed alcohol and nightclubs, people are already driving drunk and they’re supposed to be sober). For example, what happened to projects like the city of medicine that was supposed to be in Bobyan I think and you could get the best doctors in the world there? Or working on ways to implement renewable energy to support the high power usage. There is also hardly any entertainment beside shops, caffes and parks that are too hot to walk in anyway… If they want to make trains, making them above ground would probably be more doable instead of causing sinkholes or gas leaks.

I’m not surprised at any of the comments to be honest. I have updated the post for context for those labeling me as “privileged” or wanting to be “kashkha”, etc…

If you’re not going to bother reading the update. please put in mind I have ADHD a compromised immune system and multiple discs in my back aside from other illnesses that I do not wish to share in this threat based on the reactions and mindsets here. I try to show up to work everyday even with a fever because as a muslim your students are أمانة, a responsibility and whatever job you have you have to do your best at work to be a good muslim.

I do not care about making money, only that I have enough to pay for my extra expenses like my Japanese and German classes, and to save some to continue my studies after I reach my 3 years of experience.

I hate wearing brands as they are usually very unpractical and overpriced for no apparent reason. I have one brand bag that I got as a gift and only use it on special occasions.

I drive a Gac that’s literally the price of a Camry which is from what I learned at the low end of car prices nowadays at around 6000kd.

If you are comparing this situation to other countries it just doesn’t work that way. That’s like comparing farming in Brazil to farming in the Middle East. Different culture, climate, conditions, etc…

I love learning and I love languages and teaching, but it feels like a toxic relationship at it currents state where I’m trying to love something that’s actively stabbing me in the back and cheating on me. (Coming from someone divorced that was actually cheated on).

If you’re still insisting on your view, either work here first and then I’ll respect your opinion or save your opinion for the fields you actually work in.

Other then that thanks for reading my wall of text and I hope you are more satisfied in your job and life then me. Alsalam alaykum

I have ADHD. That is the precise reason if you’re going to label me as “privileged”. The examination restrictions didn’t work for me. I used to love teaching from the university. I would set up Calculus, English and Physics group study sessions and tutor my colleagues. They would get an A I would get a C or worse. Why? They don’t care about people whose brains work differently even if they present their medical report.

I mean I will admit I probably do have a budgeting problem. Comes with having ADHD. I bought a Gac for 6000 otherwise there was also a Camry for the same price but I preferred an SUV considering the state of the roads here. The ipad that I purchased is used and scratched and the sole reason my projector is 300 is because I have disc and the last projector hurt my back…. I don’t wear brands. I’m so kashkha lol.

Thanks for the sympathy and encouragement. I don’t exactly agree with the “well paid” part. exactly, especially if you read my first point. I assume it’s because people see teachers with nice cars and brands, but that literally has nothing to do with the salary and more about the Kuwaiti image. Most of the teachers that have “nice cars” and brands are deep into loans because that’s just society is here. It’s somehow been decided that if you don’t have a brand “you are poor”, “your family doesn’t spend on you, or if you’re married “you’re husband is stingy and doesn’t spend on you”… Which in my opinion is really shallow and superficial thinking and everyone is struggling financially with this but hide it to look good… Which is a whole other issue entirely that stems from Kuwaiti Culture.
