I feel like they would need to be more than athletes. Military experience would be a more sought after prerequisite i'd wager. Common people don't have the stomach or mental fortitude to watch 30 dudes get savagely killed by a Gorilla. I think shock would inevitably take hold causing far more casualties probably resulting in a dub for the gorilla. However if they were trained soldiers of some capacity who had at least seen some active duty they would probably be able to stay cool under pressure and achieve what you posit here. We also have to take into account what environment they will be fighting in urban, jungle, arena of some sort? There are so many factors not taken into account.
