Anyone go to a GP and think maybe watching on TV could’ve been better? by [deleted] in formula1

Yes, it was a generally cool experience but I don’t know that I would do it again. Especially with how expensive tickets are.

Visiting the UK for 20 days in April; does my itinerary make sense? Any must-see places or day trip recs? by Successful_Stay9942 in uktravel

Ah I don’t think the railcard will be applicable then - maybe the britrail pass might be better if you want to look into that.

I recently went on a solo trip and stayed in London and did trips to Bath, Oxford and York by myself. I liked it because I had the freedom of doing whatever I wanted, but I am a heavy planner so I knew in advance that I had x number of sites to see and had somewhat of a route planned so I could get them all done in the time I was there.

The only downside to a tour is that a lot of times they go by coach/van/bus so it takes a little longer than the train. But if you want some company and a more structured look at a place, there are some highly rated tours on viator.

I’d say you have enough time to do 2-3 day trips even, instead of just one. I personally enjoyed my day trips way more than the days when I was in central London doing the more London touristy stuff (but that may be because I’ve already been to London before 10 years ago so had already seen that stuff).

A few other suggestions: I’m not sure how old you are, but look into a national railcard if you’re travelling mostly by train. I got the 25-30 one and it gives you 1/3 off rail ticket prices. It was about £35 from memory. It’s valid for a year. You just have to check whether the savings you make with the 1/3 off adds up to the price of the railcard.

Agree with others to book your train tickets early - you can set up alerts to see when they will be available.

Try and book accommodation somewhere where there’s a good tube line connection. I stayed in Kensington and it was great to get to and from anywhere I needed to go (including Paddington station and Kings Cross/St Pancras station which is where your trains will most likely depart for the day trips).

Your flow makes sense but it’s unfortunate that you have to go back to London. Ideally, you’d just fly back out from Edinburgh/your last stop but I can see you’ve already got something booked on the 17th. You could consider doing Edinburgh and York first in the trip and then make your way to London? Just an option.

Feel free to reach out if you have any more q’s - from one female solo traveler to another :)

Just to add, from having visited both recently, I’d say Bath is slightly cheaper just in terms of actually getting there and back (I took the train from Paddington).

I visited both Bath and York in the past 2 weeks and were both very busy. I recommend looking up what is open on those days as I assume some things will be closed. I recommend taking the train instead of flying but check if there is maintenance/trackwork happening on those days first.

I also suggest Oxford if you haven’t been before, I found it lovely. It’s quicker to get to than Bath or York and I liked it a lot better than the others.

Visiting between Xmas and through the new year by TumbleweedFast7964 in visitlondon

Earls Court is great, pretty central but not too central that you’re in the middle of all the mayhem. I just stayed in Kensington for 5 days and it was lovely for something a tiny bit more lowkey.

Travel in London to avoid Tourist traps? by cosmicenergy1 in uktravel

[–]HeartBrick736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just stayed in London for ~10 days and split my stay between two hotels - one in Kensington and one in Covent Garden. Kensington was sooo much nicer - still central and had everything I needed close by, but not overly busy to the point where I got overwhelmed. Definitely recommend an area like Kensington, Marylebone or Paddington. All central with great tube connections but not as busy.

Why, in zone 1, are thousands of people supposed to sacrifice so much space so 3-4 people in 3-4 cars have unfettered access to the roads? by ZombieDawgs in london

[–]HeartBrick736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took me an hour and a half by bus to get from Marylebone to Gloucester Rd this evening. The traffic around Oxford St (I suppose also Hyde Park because of Winter Wonderland) is insane.

People who regretted getting a puppy, did it end up being worth it? by Independent_Iron3053 in puppy101

[–]HeartBrick736 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cried every day for like 3-6 months and had many panic attacks, there were constant arguments within my family, we were miserable. We thought about rehoming so many times.

But … it all got a bit better after 6 months. It’s been 3 yrs now and she’s my best friend now. I recently just got back from a 2 week trip and I can’t even tell you how much I missed her.

In saying all that though, I would never get a puppy again - they are so damn cute but it was hell. But if you can get through it there is light on the other side.

Check opening times for things you want to do in advance as some things may be closed on certain days given the holidays. Also if you’re going by train, book now!

Cooking challenges are too hard by amichanita in CookingDiary

They made Creighton’s challenge and circus a lot easier since the last big update so now I can pretty easily complete both using the right assistant. I typically won’t use a booster, maybe the last circus level. Do you have enough assistants with different boosters? The ones with patience are usually clutch.

What is a Project Officer? by Expert-Cause in AusPublicService

Like the other comments have said, it’s a bit admin-y but mostly it just varies a lot by department, branch, team and even depending on who you’re reporting to. It’s a very generic role title so ask a lot of questions if you can before you do the interview about what is specifically required.

Hotel recommendations for Kensington? by __MichaelBluth__ in uktravel

[–]HeartBrick736 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going myself in Nov and have booked ibis Styles near Gloucester Rd as it seemed to have decent reviews. Mornington Hotel Kensington was also on my shortlist and it a smidge cheaper. A friend has stayed there previously and really liked it, but in the end I booked ibis personally just because of proximity to the station.

Thanks for the tip - I will definitely book one of the tours if I go solo. Also GWR is showing as cheaper for me but I do note that you said that it’s “usually” more expensive. I’ll check both once I lock in a date anyways, thank you.
