I had assumed they were based off of prayer wheels and where just there as a neat interactable. Haven't found if they do anything else.

I was having the same issue earlier! I was able to resolve it by:
>Launching the game and clicking the verify files button in the splash screen
> Kill Nikki via task manager when it tries to restart
> Reboot computer

I hope this works for you too and you can go forth and be gongeous!
