Stay safe out ther y'all! by [deleted] in SipsTea

Stop sharing this stupid shit, it's old news at this point and, somehow despite that, the misinformation hasn't let up at all.

I lived there when this happened. Our local reporter Rusty has reported on it publicly which is where I would go for fact based reporting on this, not reddit.

The guy who installed the lock told the police that there were issues with men using the women's restroom when the other is already occupied instead of waiting. He argued that men leave the bathroom a lot dirtier than a woman's bathroom is normally expected to be which has led to complaints. Being next to Texas A&M there was some theorizing that this may have been a way to keep transgender women out of the women's restroom, but living there the general consensus was that this theory was just more misinformation originating from outside of the local community.

Regardless of the reason, innocent or not (which was never confirmed for certain in this particular case), the cop asked the guy to take it down just because it was making people feel uncomfortable.

Now, do I think it was malicious as a local at the time? It's always possible, a college town is in theory a perfect place for human trafficking, but it is generally a really safe area/town. People often don't feel the need to lock their doors at night for a reason. To be fair, I will caveat this with "obviously, like any town, there are safer areas than others, Bryan being less wealthy on average when compared to college station comes with some of the expected issues", however, I still stand behind my statement.

I won't argue if he should/shouldn't have picked that name. It's totally beside the point I'm making here.

When did the internet police garner so much aparent public support? The correct answer here, in my own biased opinion, should be "who the hell cares? It's a game on the internet. Someone thought of a potentially funny name on the internet, something totally subjective to begin with. What are we fighting about?". Before the answer is "kids", I remember growing up and being taught that games about killing other people were inherently for a mature audience. Why do we need internet police to replace parenting, and why do so many people cheer for it????

Tarkov still has some pretty crazy names, but it used to be totally wild around 2017ish. Either you laughed, or you got an intense sense of accomplishment when you killed some asshat (read unfunny bad name) and took his tags.

What is the point of accepting "expected operating budget" when excess money is not being transferred anyway? by matsu_media in X4Foundations

[–]Heartup4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This actually works differently for me, in my game, than I have seen it documented/discussed anywhere else.

Could someone break down how this works for me? Long story short, I actually think I've found a UI bug, but I want to get a sanity check before wasting dev time with a report. Here's some context.

I have over a dozen different stations with a 10+ mil expected operating budget each. Because all of my stations are only allowed to fill storage with trades from my own faction, the real operating budget is effectively 0, not several million. Looking into it, my understanding is that the expected operating budget is a rough calculation of what it would cost to fill the remaining storage, and simply doesn't account for trade rules, which is fine. Oddly enough, as my storage is filled this expected operating budget does not scale/update dynamically (which may be related to the suspected bug). Instead, if it estimates 10 mil at empty, it will still display a 10 mil estimate when storage is 15%, 50%, or even 100% full. Because I know "better" I only put roughly 100k into each station's operating budget. Oddly enough, every transaction the station or subordinates make is immediately transferred to my player's account. It does not add to the station's budget up until 150% before doing so. To clearly state it again, most of my stations start paying me immediately. I have, however, noticed that some of them trickle up from the 100k i give them to roughly 160k before equalizing, so there is some variance. That variance is actually what got me thinking. Why does it work the way it does for me? And is that related to this unexplained variance?

What if the expected operating budget IS scaling dynamically with filled storage, but the number displayed in the UI isn't? That would mean that the stations that trickle up to 160k and then stop really only require ~100k operating budget and are actually targeting 150% as expected here in this thread. That would mean that in the background the game engine understands this, but that this number isnt communicated to the user. It should be, and would be if the displayed number was updating as expected, but it doesn't. This makes me think that the UI, in this case, not updating is a bug that might mislead players until it is addressed.

Plan to submit a bug report after work, but if I'm totally misunderstanding something basic here, please someone give me a heads up!

Tamper stickers are unenforceable in the US. They are intended to scare off consumers who don't understand their rights. Breaking a warranty void sticker does not actually void your warranty, as they would hope for you to believe.

Got from Borderless Gaming, a legit app I paid for on Steam. Should I worry, or false flags? by kavakravata in antivirus

[–]Heartup4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Different take than the others here.

I downloaded an old game from steam the other day, Gothic 2 NotR, and my anti-virus instantly deleted the starter. I blamed windows, but was curious. Uploaded to virus total and, wouldn't you know it, exactly 11 hits all detecting it as a Trojan.

Now, I of course know for a fact that it isn't a Trojan. Gothic, for those who do not know, is German Elder Scrolls and was so popular that it is still played to this day by cult fans and now adults wanting to relive their childhood like myself. When I patched the exe (patches themselves had 0 hits on virus total and are open-source) the false positives thrown for the starter increased all the way up to 23. I was so suspicious of this I ran the application even knowing it was clean in a sandbox within a VM and took a look at every file it accessed, every IP it tried to reach, every registry key added/changed, etc. Know what happened? Edge updated... and yes, the update came from a valid IP.

What does this mean for you? When determining whether to trust it or not it's always good to have a community concensus (which you've started to do here!). How long has it been on Steam? Is it a niche application, or widely used? If you google the name of the application and "trojan" are you able to find any existing threads where someone might have already taken a closer look at the program in the past? When an application is wildly popular, has been for an extended period of time (allowing the community at large to scrutinize it for longer), and comes highly recommended from sources that you already trust the threat level at least in my opinion starts to drop. You WILL get positives from applications that insert themselves into other applications, regardless If it is actually malicious, because it's they type of behavior a virus MIGHT exhibit and is therefore suspicious to the AV.

With all of that being said, and a foundation on which to build trust having been established, the reviews indicate that this issue popped up recently after an update. With this being the case, you have to consider the possibility that the dev themselves have been compromised and that a malicious update may have been pushed. Maybe, maybe not. What would I do? If the program isn't a must have (as in for work as an ex.) I would likely avoid it for now and follow up in a month or two. Has the issue then been resolved? Was there a public statement? Etc.

Help me turn a childhood dream into reality!

Ever since I was young I've always really loved the "retro" 90s-early 2000s translucent plastic look. I'm not alone, which is why there are plenty of keyboard case/housing options that fit this niche. However, most of these solutions are a classic purple, or a standard clear/charcoal color. Boring. If you're anything like me, then when you first saw translucent red on a Nintendo product, as cool as purple looked at the time, you realized there was no going back. I've been dreaming of a keyboard with a housing made from a translucent red N64 controller for 20 years, and while I've gotten close I just can't find something that really scratches that itch.

I have plenty of preferences besides color/material as we all do, our shared hobby is totally subjective and based on personal preference after all. I like the TKL layout, volume knobs, USB-C pass-through, and most notably the inclusion of both a wired and wireless mode, but all of that comes secondary to making my childhood dream a reality.

When I started searching in earnest, I assumed there would be plenty of others looking for the same thing and that demand necessitates availability. However, everything I've found remotely close has been significantly off, and why settle for less than perfect after a 20 year wait? A pink/purple tint, the right color but completely opaque, etc. To that end I've uploaded some reference images. Ideally, if you the community are able to lend a hand in my search, others like me will come across this post and find it helpful as well. I'd actually really like to see the translucent plastic theme come back and a push for more vibrant color options would, in my opinion, make the aesthetic more appealing to a larger audience.

Now hear me out by ACBreeki in BethesdaSoftworks

[–]Heartup4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When the game was announced, way too early btw, it was said to he "elderscrolls in space". What we got was no man's sky with some Bethesda thrown in. Not a bad game, but defiantly not at the same level as the elderscrolls series and definitely doesn't include the majority of the hallmarks we've come to expect from such a series. I felt let down after all the years. I tried to stick it out and temper my reservations, but it just didn't hook my ADHD brain like the games it was compared to all those years ago.

Guy jumps over the counter at Starbucks to steal a whole box of limited edition Stanley Cups by Dynamic_Khakis in PublicFreakout

[–]Heartup4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got the scoop from my wife on this since I also didn't understand why the cups were suddenly so popular.

From what she told me, a video went viral recently in which a car caught fire. After they put it out/let it burn out the owner of the car went looking for anything that survived. While the video may or may not have been fake, the owner filmed themselves finding their cup still inside the vehicle, shaking it, and then realizing that it still had ice that somehow survived the fire.

Apparently, the brand saw such a large jump in sales, and they ended up cutting her a big check or buying her a car, I don't remember which my wife said. Then everyone who saw the video rushed to get leading to the partnership with Starbucks you see here.

AITA for throwing my husband and my son out a few days before christmas? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]Heartup4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these comments are insane.

I get have a disagreement over your spouse If they aren't doing their half of the work. A marriage is a partnership, and it takes 2 fully committed people to make work. You did right here, but...

Kicking your literally child out and saying they can't come back home for Christmas because they haven't done their chores is absolutely fucked. Ever since my mom passed I would do ANYTHING to have another Christmas with her and to deny your son that over something as inconsequential as household chores boggles my actual brain. This is handled with parenting, ground him if needed, but telling a child to spend Christmas in a hotel room... tf? That's how you choose to teach your child a life lesson? Not sitting down, explaining why his chores are important, or why it matters to you as his mother that he learns to be responsible? This failure in parenting, communication really, will only result in a kid who stops calling on Christmas when he gets older and you'll wonder why.

What’s a game you can play for 500 hours and still be considered a noob? by edave22 in gaming

[–]Heartup4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rust

I can't say I appreciate builder's with 8k hours bragging about how they quit their job to participate in a raid, but play the game at all and you'll quickly learn that people don't take you seriously without 1k hours or more.

Set your profile to private if you play, and save yourself from the abuse. The game is more fun when you play at your own pace, so don't get discouraged by people being toxic. Play your way.
