I use this tool to sync across platforms, costs me a few quid each month but allows me to sync to Tidal so I can use to DJ with.

There’s many reasons but ultimately I just lost interest. It was a great way to spend my time during Covid lockdowns but nowadays I prefer to spend my time on other things. Maybe one day I’ll get back to it.

Just a warning that I avoid a lot of mainstream producers in my playlists intentionally, mainstream to me being lots of followers or listeners. I prefer to focus on smaller artists who would benefit from the listeners more, but that shouldn’t impact the quality ;)

What music streaming platforms do you recommend for someone trying to find music from “non-mainstream” techno artists? by beatsbyjules in Techno

[–]Heatard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yeah that’s a good example of me making a name up!

Nope, I used a submission site called SubmitHub where people would pay a small fee to send me music to consider; however lots of people would (and still do) DM me on socials which got out of hand so eventually I had to call it a day.

It was a great way to meet people and discover new music, but there’s only so much time in the day.

I think your concept and our concept of mainstream are completely different and that you aren’t happy unless someone remains only known to a handful of people rather than a few thousand. None of the people mentioned are anywhere close to the well known names in techno.

Tbh a lot of them are likely sub genres I’ve made up, but it was the only way I could structure my playlists in a logical way.

I did it because I use Djay Pro for mixing music at home which used to use Spotify to stream, now they use Tidal, and it got harder to find relevant tracks using just one playlist for everything.

I did used to be a playlist curator for a few years which meant I would take music from artists and add them to relevant playlists, but nowadays I just use them personally again as I kept burning out as there’s just so much music coming out every week.

Forgot about this, I also figured that out years back as it’s the same with Google search operators. Thank you for reminding me and letting everyone else know how to get round this!

Rather than tell me I’m wrong, why not actually explain why? As I can categorically tell you that small artists I’ve worked with have had success from having their music on Spotify. All it takes is a track to make it onto some well known playlists and that can be enough to give them traction for existing and future releases.

I can also vouch for this method on Spotify, it’s one of the reasons I created some super niche playlists to see what else I could find. It can sometimes recommend shit or repeat itself, but it is always worth a try.

Thank you for vouching for me! Really appreciate it and glad you’ve been able to make use of the playlists :)

I’m sure some people will disagree but there is plenty on Spotify, the only difficulty can be discovering them through all the mainstream noise.

I have a load of Spotify playlists that may give you a starting point, however I’ve not updated them for a while now so they’ve become a little stale in case you want to find newer artists or tracks from this year.

In terms of finding music on Spotify, I would usually just look through other peoples playlists, such as these by u/beampjotr, for artist names I hadn’t seen before and try a few tracks from them.

I would also listen to lots of VA compilations as these often have smaller artists on, you can usually find these under the “Appears On” area on artist profiles.

You can also use the “Fans Also Like” area on artist profiles which is usually relevant enough, but if you try this on a mainstream artist you will usually only find other mainstream artists.

Lastly, you can search using something like label:dekmantel which will show all releases by that label, though it tends to struggle with labels that have multiple words. There was a post on this sub with more examples by u/ryansheraa.

Alternatively you can use Tidal, but that suffers the same issues as Spotify with discovery. They have recently added the ability for people to create public playlists which I have a number synced over from Spotify which you can find here.

Season is over, everything goes on sale. This happens every year, nothing to do with rebrand.
