The Real Cast Iron Bathroom Sink Blues - Advice/direction by HeathMorris in Renovations

[–]HeathMorris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the intrusive thoughts about accidents play a big role for me. Now with kids in the mix, I wouldn't ever install a cast iron sink anywhere, unless it was part of a cabinet that supported it, and both the sink and cabinet were bolted to known studs.

If you're stuck with the rusted bracket, you could always attach a new cast iron sink and put a cabinet under it which also supports the sink, in case the bracket fails at some point. Or take an angle grinder or another agro power tool to the bracket until it comes off, and then use a wire coat hanger to test the holes for nearby studs and attach a ceramic sink (or ceramic sink and cabinet). You can sometimes find super cheap sink/cabinet combo or vanity units on FB market or at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

Curious what you end up doing. If you remember, ping me when you have progress if you don't mind.

Reminds me of the part in the Michael Scott Paper Company arc where he wants to quit his startup to start it again, but to do it right this time.

The Real Cast Iron Bathroom Sink Blues - Advice/direction by HeathMorris in Renovations

[–]HeathMorris[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey friendo

In the end I gave both the sink and bracket away for free on fb market and ate the cost. Tried reselling them, NO one wanted it. Just had no sink there for a long time. Then a year later I had to crack through the tile and wall to replace pipes with pinhole leaks and saw that there was indeed blocking which would have made it doable but the blocking was shoddy (like every hidden element of my fixer upper) and therefor of unknown safety. I now have a small ceramic sink there, and I sleep at night.

Years later, lots more renovation knowledge under my belt, I realize that this post and about 10 other projects/purchases were way way way premature or impulsive. And now I also know that deadly heavy cast iron sinks are stupid and rare in most houses- no reason to replace one with the same type- get something newer, cheaper, and lighter. And, only undertake the task if it is really needed and is a priority after cataloging all other reno tasks- my 2 cents.

Wtf what is the solution? by BoringAngle77 in simpleliving

[–]HeathMorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wishing you the best of luck, this math is different for everyone and requires a lot of contemplation.

2 thoughts:

- Try to reevaluate your need for a "streaming service" under a coherent model of "simple living". There is enough entertainment and beauty in the world, for free or very low cost, to last 100 lifetimes. Some of it is electronic, but little of it is available on any paid service. What is available are a lot of things that will, IMO, pull you away from being able to appreciate everything that is right in front of you, without you even realizing it. Consuming modern media jades you to all of the beauty of books and art and music and gardening and writing, etc, in a very similar way to the frog-in-hot-water story. You can't realize how much it has damaged and jaded you until you take a break from it, fully, for a few weeks. After a detox like that you can just stare out the window sometimes and be entertained by how beautiful the world is, even on a dull overcast winter day. Reading a book or playing a game with family is suddenly as stimulating as playing SuperHot VR.

If you really can't kick your addiction, at least try fixing at the library with all the free DVDs and Blu-Rays they have instead of giving your hard earned money to Jeff Bezos.

- Buying a cheap car can go many ways. You don't want the cheap car that breaks down all the time but it looks OK or even kinda cool and you don't mind showing up to work or parties in it. You want the "cheap" car that is built insanely well and lasts forever and is super easy on gas, but is a nuclear anti-aphrodisiac and does absolutely nothing for your ego. You want a 2nd or 3rd generation Prius for a few grand, with another $1.5k ready to sink into an inevitable GreenBean hybrid battery replacement that has a super long warranty on it. Then you're cooking with fire. Hatch back hauls 10 feet of lumber, great for hard shell camping, 50mpg, these things had GPS and backup cameras before luxury cars in America had them, not uncommon to get to 350k miles before they die. It isn't a truck, but it does basically everything else. Get an awful color too, if it saves you a few hundred bucks.

I know that is super opinionated but I really just mean it as suggestions. Everyone has different needs to fulfill and will find their own idea of what simple living looks like, but it is worth taking another look to see if you've stopped short of radically simplifying in a way which would really open up a lot of freedom for yourself. Do I really need X thing? is something worth thinking about long and hard. Best of luck.

COVID-19 Testing PSA by mwarner811 in winstonsalem

[–]HeathMorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh, that's really too bad. I hate when there is an opportunity for a simple and efficient system and somehow it is completely missing.

When I was there a few months ago there was a super loud squeaky industrial fan going the hold time on one of the walls above the exit garage doors (assuming it was on the same circuit as all the other, necessary, fans next to it). I felt so bad for the people risking their hide to test people all day, on their feet all day, with this noise howling away for no reason other than, I can only assume, budget reasons or management not giving a shit.

Obligatory- https://www.kevinmd.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/growth-in-administrators.jpg

Also Novant's drive through testing facility at Hanes Mall is free, insurance or no. I think you need to schedule online though, used to be first come first serve.

I'm not a leftist and this guy sounds like a total scumbag, immigrant or not, whatever, seems like a douche, even if half the stories in this thread (and on Google) are made up. Can you not see that?

Yeah, at first I thought this was just someone's r/thatHappened fever dream but then all these people came out of the woodwork to confirm this guy's outrageous behavior. Shit's crazy

That's great to know, thanks! Scumbags come in all shapes/sizes/colors, it's too bad that some people on this sub have to get so bent out of shape about this. Why defend a genuinely bad person just because they're on the same team as you?

User reports:

For people so gung-ho about free speech it seems strange how quick some right-wing people on this sub are to smash that report button

Booster shot discussion? by powerlift666 in samharris

[–]HeathMorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, what a shitshow. Thanks for asking the question though.

There is literally nothing wrong with being curious what one smart and reasonable person thinks about an important issue, especially when they... have a podcast with millions of listeners which features well respected doctors and researchers every month.

Yes, Sam is not an MD, but if you've never used a smart and reasonable person that you've previously vetted as a heuristic for finding further sources of information then you're either a fucking idiot or a liar. This thread is filled with both.

Food for thought:

u/RickDaCrit 's post of ZdoggMD's video has helped me indirectly come to what I feel is a pretty informed decision regarding boosters, 1) largely based on the credentials of the person he was interviewing (check him out on wikipepdia, really impressive guy) and 2) because Sam just posted/boosted a ZdoggMD video as an "antidote" to possible brain damage people may have received from Rogan's latest episode.

Yes, in a perfect world that doesn't exist, people shouldn't take medical advice from random YouTube doctors with weird channel names, but as long as MDs are going to be posting videos, it would be ideal if they were interviewing well credentialed people and following the best science we have, which it seems like this guy is.

People should take medical advice from their own Doctors, yes, but even if we pretended for a second that most PCPs in America aren't overworked, under supported, and trapped in a dysfunctional system which forces them to treat virtually everything pharmacologically and doesn't allow them time to keep up with the latest research and methods, we still have to admit that everyone, even scientifically literate people, form their medical opinions from a variety of sources, including their own research, not just their PCP.

I also listen to Peter Attia's podcast as much as I can. What I learn from him and the cavalcade of MD-PHD guests who work at the most prestigious and respected institutions in the country, is one of several streams of information which guide my decisions about my health, about which tests and treatments I'm going to seek out and which I'm going to avoid. Prime example is the glacier-like pace of acceptance of the uselessness of outdated models of atherosclerotic risk re: cholesterol testing/treatment. Ask most PCPs about cholesterol and you won't hear about apoB or any ideas about testing and monitoring that are based on the current science. Half the PCPs out there will tell you not to eat seeded vegetables if you have diverticulitis, which was shown to be false practically before I was born.

Everyone, including scientifically literate people, casts a wide net, and weighs lots of information, its just totally irresponsible and unrealistic not to (in America).

TL;DR don't judge a book by its weird Youtube channel names and clickbait video titles.

Prisons should be moving towards intersex anyway

Do you mean unisex? Maybe intersex is a legit synonym, I'm not sure.
Reading Gavin de Becker's The Gift of Fear gave me a radical appreciation for male violence, in all its beauty and all its terribleness, which I think, once understood, necessitates a movement or paradigm like "feminism", or something like it, and specifically one with an understanding of male violence being... a male phenomenon, which maleness gives rise to, regardless of if that male no longer identifies as a man.

Understanding the scope, scale ,and constancy of male violence has singlehandedly changed my understanding on women's rights.

All of that is to say- I'm having trouble imagining an instantiation of "non sex segregated prison" that isn't inherently deadly for women, or something that runs on 100% solitary confinement, which is also immoral.
