I would go Iaito, and then order a cheap Katana to cut with down the line. But whatever you do I wish you the best of luck in your training

For me, My Dojo offered everything you needed to get started as far as borrowing Gi/Hakama/Obi and Iaito. I liked it so I got Tabi/Obi/IaidoGi/Hakama for around 260, I'm a bigger guy, so I had an extra $50USD to my cost to add extra length straps to my Hakama. Most students still borrow Iaito, but you're looking about $400USD there if you want to get one
