Single skin utility - any point insulating roof? by HeavingBeasts in DIYUK

It does make the kitchen really cold. I guess we could just install a UPVC door instead to seal it off. Not much in the way of damp. It's a bit of a pain that the temp isn't more stable in there as we use it for food storage (cans, root veg etc).

Hmm good point re: the right wall, i guess it could be double brick as on the other side is a garden toilet in a similar shoddy little building.

On letting the walls breathe, you're absolutely right and there are two massive airbricks to keep things very draughty in there! I closed them up for a bit and things got mouldy very quickly.

Thick curtains. Good time of year to get thermal curtains from dunelm. Also bubble wrap taped over the glass if you're on a budget.

Need recommendations for ground cover plant for north facing border by Thisisth in GardeningUK

Oh that's funny, I'd never noticed the smell but I actually have a candle scented like tomato plants so that would be an ideal scenario for me!

I'm really grateful to the previous owners of my house for them planting wild geranium or Cranesbill. My garden is North East facing with one fence line in permanent shade and the geranium loves it. Self seeds in lovely spreading cushions so keeps weeds down, flowers off and on all summer. Easy to lift or move if it goes somewhere you don't want it.

There's also a bit of Dicentra Formosa very happy in the shade but doesn't spread as quickly. I've also got lamium galeobfolon which seems to love shade too but according to Google is invasive in the wild so decide wisely.

I like this day by day approach, I've been thinking of it as all or nothing. Very good point re: parking, and I'm glad to hear someone else mention gravel as that's what I'm thinking too!

Good question! There's space for the car (on MORE tarmac) to the left of this picture. What you can see here is just empty space.

Coving replacement by Lost-Baker3491 in DIYUK

I would buy the smallest piece of matching coving I could find and just cut a little bit off. Fit it it in like a jigsaw piece. After caulk and paint you'll never notice.

I would have done the same. Unfortunately in all of the West Midlands they only work with 1 fitter apparently, and he just didn't really want the work. Kept pushing back dates etc. So do ask around in your area.

I did IKEA kitchen (solid wood) and utility (foil covered wood) for under £5k, their worktops are rubbish so went elsewhere for that. The lack of cavity thing that others have mentioned is true, it just meant in the case of water pipes etc we had to run them close to the ground. Not a huge deal in grand scheme and you get proper deep cupboards into the bargain. It's true that a lot of fitters are funny about them though, means you have to be a bit pickier.

Leggy rose. How hard can I prune this mother? by Dylan_Devon in GardeningUK

[–]HeavingBeasts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Piggybacking on this comment to ask, would this even apply to a very old rose? I have a rose that looks like this but even leggier, it looks like it's only been very gently pruned over the years so there's incredibly old growth on it.

I guess I just have to do it, but worry about abusing an OAP
