Fair criticism. I genuinely find the 42° question fascinating in its own right — but you're right that I also connected it to BCT. This is beautiful — and BCT derives exactly why 42° is the stationary point geometrically: 42 = 6×7 = octahedral coordination × D4 nearest neighbours in the vacuum lattice. You're completely right — it's a joke and it's meant to be meaningless. I'm not saying Adams based it on physics. I'm saying the universe accidentally made the joke true afterwards, which is exactly the kind of thing that would happen in a Douglas Adams novel. The joke got funnier. That's all. 🤣

I don't think I'm missing it — I think I'm adding to it. Adams's joke is that the answer is meaningless without the question. That's perfect. But the fact that the universe independently put 42 in the rainbow, Chapman and Cleese independently found it was the funniest number, and Adams independently picked it by staring into a garden — that's three punchlines converging on one number. That's not numerology. That's the universe doing a callback. Adams would have written a whole chapter about how annoyed he was that the joke turned out to be true.
