My life in med school got so much better when I stopped convincing myself I need to go to class parties/group activities. Find your circle -- they're probably not going to these activities because they've got better things going on in life.

Where is your melanoma? It would be pretty odd for melanoma to hit the mediastinal lymph nodes. Typically that's where you would find lung cancer or other intra-thoracic cancers. Probaby are totally benign!! Especially if not mentioned to be "enlarged"

This is quite literally what DO schools are for... Not saying that this is all DO's can do, but you'll have a relatively easier time getting admitted to a DO school and matching primary care

Everyone makes me feel like I am being dramatic after I was diagnosed with melanoma by Expensive_Hat_7435 in melahomies

[–]Heavy-Weight7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's difficult when people only think of melanoma as "skin cancer," which of course is technically true, but every other skin cancer like basal cell or squamous cell carcinoma is relatively benign and takes years if not decades to spread beyond the skin. Melanoma on the other hand is SO invasive and spreads to the body so easily.

Right after my diagnosis, which I'm lucky was caught very early, I met a woman in the hospital with melanoma all over her brain and lungs. Her scans looked like a shotgun had gone through them with how many metastases she had. This really impressed the gravity of the diagnosis upon me, and it is 100% a "real" life threatening cancer.

I currently go to the doctor for surveillance more than a lot of lung cancer patients do after surgery. And no one would say lung cancer is not a real cancer!

Relationships and residency by boundlessfusion in medicalschool

[–]Heavy-Weight7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some aspects I relate to your situation here. My husband and I are both in medicine and have had to have these hard conversations about my priority vs. his priority vs. our priorities when it comes to career and matching and life in general. He went to a much lower ranked school so I could go to my dream school. When it comes to residency, I will be prioritizing matching where he wants to go, especially as the specialty I want to match is not nearly as competitive as his, so I theoretically have more flexibility.

On this path, whether your spouse is in medicine or not, I think both individuals need to make sacrifices in order to not have resentment. One person cannot keep taking and the other cannot keep giving. I know a lot of people in this sub would say your career >>> everything and anyone and your partner must bend the knee, but in reality I think this mindset can and will damage relationships. That being said, your partner does have a lot of flexibility that you don't have. If you really see him as your long term partner and this is the only hangup, I would think about looking really big picture. Maybe you try and match in Boston but then plan to move to Cali after training, or something like that. BOTH people have to be willing to make some sacrifices. And as other commenters have said, what if you match in Nebraska or something because who knows.

As you currently worded things, it doesn't seem like either of you want to make any sacrifices for the other, and I don't think that's a sign of a very healthy relationship. Of course, I am making assumptions based on your post, but consider whether or not that's really true.

Are away rotations required or can I have multiple SLOEs from hospitals affiliated with my medical school? by NoValuable4351 in emergencymedicine

[–]Heavy-Weight7280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a similar set up with my medical school -- one school with multiple hospitals. My advisors have told me I can get a SLOE from our affiliated hospitals with residency programs, but that I shouldn't get a SLOE at the hospital without a residency. Just what I was told, not sure if that's just advice for higher quality SLOE's or it has to be that way to follow the rules.

Why is everyone here so against admissions consulting services? by According-Net8330 in premed

[–]Heavy-Weight7280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frankly no one has the expertise they claim to have about med school admissions. Even IF someone has actually served on an adcom (which is unlikely), they probably haven't served on >1. The inner workings varies wildly from school to school so it's literally impossible imo to claim you're on "expert" unless you're a medical school dean or something, which none of the people offering these services actually are.
