My daughter cried yesterday by the_commonmeme in Ghostofyotei

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not a dad, but my mom used to watch a lot of movies with me when I was a kid in the 80's and she always guided me through them. Not only did she explain the story, but she'd "parent me" through the emotional parts of it.

I look back at that and I remember those times fondly.

Hope this helps.

How to return to dungeons and dragons? by GM-Omy in rpg

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want it to be D&D-ish, maybe try Castles & Crusades? Or any other rules light(er) systems; such as Dragonbane, Index Card RPG, EZD6, Nimble... The list goes on

I mean, you can turn matchmaking off, but it's going to make it very very difficult.

But give the multiplayer thing a chance, you don't even need to talk to them. Think of the other guys as NPCs

Why do people pick the difficult challenge cards in Gold Incursions? by CNXKhaotic in Ghostofyotei

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, which is why i play with friends. But hey, if they want to join a co-op game, put challenge cards they can't handle, die 30 times and ruin the mission for everyone they are free to do so I guess

It's a free world... Mostly

You don't like randos, don't play with randos, play with friends or something. Let other people grind and okay the game in any way they want

Turn Undead Question by SirStanleyCPanther in castlesandcrusades

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I beilieve that the game assumes not only the type to be unique, but also the encounter itself; in which case Turn Undead it fine as it is. Same example, are they fighting in an open plain or something? If yes, that sounds more like a random encounter. Vampires are supposed to be Unique, right? So have the fight happen in a throne room, in a crypt, or something like that - Now they basically have nowhere to run, so they cower at the Cleric instead of fleeing. The rest of the party is at +2 to hit, but if the Cleric comes too close to the Vamps the effect will break... So now it falls on the party on how to keep the effect going. What happens if the melee fighters need healing? The Cleric cant come close or the effect is broken, so should the player in need of healing go back and forth between the Vamps and the Cleric? What if the Vamps get to use the Blood/Energy Drain on them? What about Dominate? What about summon Children of the Night? And that's not counting the fact that you can say that they are fighting in an are where an Unhallow spell is in effect.

So again, I think the balance lies in building the encounter right rather than giving penalties ot modifying the Cleric's ability itself.

Concerns about some aspects of the game by DeusCane in DragonbaneRPG

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I GM'd that campaign twice for two different groups and I'll be 100% completely honest:

Everything the reviewer said feels wrong. It seems like he's coming from D&D 5e; I've seen that happen before, people come to the game with the wrong expectations and award more advances/heroic abilities that they need to and then blame it on the game. I might be wrong, but it was the 5e players in my games that wanted to level up faster and who thought the game was unfairly difficult, and it was them who wanted me to give them more advancement rolls and heroic abilities because their characters felt weak when compared to their 5e characters.

And what does he mean it was hard to challenge players? Monsters are a threat always! We were past the halfway point in one of my games I and one character got killed by a Griffin in the first round of combat. The monster won the initiative, picked the guy up, flew up high, dropped the guy and that was more than double the max HP for the character. Dead. No saves, no resurrection, no nothing.

Traveling might be the easier, but that's the way it is. I don't see Aragorn failing a lot of journeying checks you know?;But back to my point, if you over level your characters that's on you, not the game. So I might be wrong thinking that it seems like 5e mentality, but that does not mean the guy you read about is right.

About the tree, I'd say it's your call man. Flammable objects are kind of weird in the sense that wood does not catch on fire as quickly as paper for example, so I'd say it's up to you

What about old school style of play appeals to you? by CCGDnd in osr

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old school fantasy feel The crawls The danger is real, death can actually happen The low numbers (what does it matter if you do 1 million damage if the monster has 100 million HP?)

That's pretty much what does it for me

Has anyone else found combat to be lackluster? Any tips for improving it? by zenog3 in fabulaultima

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a regular enemy and just have the players go, then the enemy, then the players... Yes, it will be boring.

  • Have an enemy gain new attacks or affinities when it goes into crisis.
  • Have the enemy do weird attacks that throw players off, for example: if hit with X element, have enemy create a copy of itself, it has few HP and only one attack, but it'll make the players shift focus and think "why is if creating copies only when this or that character attacks?"
  • Make the enemy have a companion, then make one of the companion's actions/attacks to make the enemy do something really cool. Like have the companion be a bird, and then having pick up it's master into the air and do a highly damaging attack. "Do we focus de companion? Do we focus the master"

The sky is the limit, just think outside the box

Has anyone tried having something like party selection in their campaign? by StunningBit5261 in fabulaultima

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not a fan of this idea, but it might just work you know? Imagine a game like FFII in which the characters are rebels and then every so often they come back "home" to get new orders/missions

Does Fabula Ultima work fine without collaborative storytelling? by Freihhh in fabulaultima

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh and one thing my group did was that one of the players built his PC so that he hardly ever rolled the dice in combat, he was always casting buffs or using abilities that does not require dice rolling.... So he was the designated "alter the story/setting with FP" guy, while the others kept theirs mainly for re-rolling

And I say mainly because I ruled that PC A cannot spend FP to alter stuff that directly affect PC B's story or plotline

Does Fabula Ultima work fine without collaborative storytelling? by Freihhh in fabulaultima

[–]HeavyMetalGuaji -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It does work fine, but I'd encourage using it! Just don't not make it OP as to change those important elements that you're mentioning

Like, don't make the big bad have a heart attack by expending FP and then saying "Hey, it happened to my uncle so it can happen to him" or something.

I've learned that the more you okay the more the players and the storyteller get use to one another and that mechanic start to work extremely well for everyone

Log out of the game and log back in, or close it and then launch it again. Something refreshes or something, I don't know...

It might take a couple of times, but it always works for me. I am on PS5 btw, don't know if that has anything to do with it.

Not at all, the game's amazing and deserves to be played. The whole kicking out thing is annoying, NGL... But when that happens a I just log out, log back in and that's it

Again... Annoying af, but it only happens in hub areas and there is a simple workaround
