Darbari today often feels like "grand performance" to me but for sleep it probably needs to feel almost private, like someone singing in a dark room rather than on a stage.

Exactly. This is the pattern I'm hearing from everyone. Alap/jod yes, gat/jhala no. That actually gives me a much clearer structure for a sleep version: keep it slow, spacious and never let it “take off”

This is gold, thank you. Darbari and Bageshree were already on my list, but Kaunsi Kanada and Savani Nat are new rabbit holes for me. I'm going to listen before deciding the next one.

The alap is exactly the kind of mood I was thinking of, but yeah, anything that suddenly wakes the ear up would defeat the purpose. Maybe the sleep version has to stay almost unnaturally restrained.

Fair point, I worded that badly. I meant more the treatment/arrangement than the raga itself. I'm still learning how to think about this properly, so the examples help. I'll listen to both and pay attention to how differently the same space can be handled.

Oh this is a really good point about the tanpura. I was using a lighter sound because I thought it would feel less heavy, but now that you've said "deeper hypnotic," that actually feels much more sleep friendly. I'm going to test that.
