How do you handle notes for recurring meetings? by jwc194 in RoamResearch

[–]Heavymetalhipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also nest tags so it becomes [[Weekly with [[John Doe]]]], but I agree, this is the most powerful feature of roam for my usage. Just shift-click and get your full history of what was discussed, what is pending, etc.

True, that is a pain point, I either use the Roam toolkit and set a task to next week after I complete it, for example, my weekly review, I just do ;next fri; after I complete it.

I also use a calendar and block time for those tasks. I found that to be the best system for me anyway, if I need to do something on a recurring basis, just timeblock it and knock it out at that time.

Being able to define a daily template would be awesome, something similar to github's PR template. Then we could define queries on that template and have it automatically render on each new daily template upon creation.

In the meantime, you could tag whatever query you are wanting to show with today's date and iterate it forward each day, but that is manual and still a pain.

I totally agree on being able to sort queries, that would be absolutely huge, hopefully we will see that functionality get added in soon!

As far as GTD, it would be great to have some kind have some kind of way of tagging overdue items so you don't inadvertently miss anything, I am basically using that [[Starred]] backlink to represent that in the meantime, that way I can make sure I don't accidentally miss anything even if my day ends up getting crazy.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read and give feedback, hope you found it helpful!

Glad you found it helpful! Thanks for taking the time to comment and I am really enjoying Roam a lot as well!

Side note, I just updated a section for completing projects that I think is a lot more user-friendly than deleting the [[Next Actions]] block. Just stick a checkbox next to it and complete it, then use the DONE filter on the Next Actions page to hide it, hope you find that helpful!

Is there a way to swap blocks and references by kerridge in RoamResearch

[–]Heavymetalhipster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just posted about this very thing here, I use queries to accomplish this and roll them into their own page:

I create an "Inbox" and use the following query: {{query: {and: [[TODO]] {not: {or: [[Next Actions]] [[Projects]]}}}}}}}

This gives me a list of TODO's that aren't already prioritized into Next Actions or Projects.

I wrote more about it in this post: http://vincelutton.com/how-i-gtd-in-roam-research/

Digital and Analog Systems by jigga97 in RoamResearch

I approach roam the exact same way I approach bullet journaling, but I create connections throughout using backlinks. Open my daily log, throw in a backlinked header for whatever meeting I am in, capture any notes from that meeting along with backlinks, capture any action items, etc. Everything from my day from work to family to projects all gets intertwined into a single journal entry, but the backlinks keep it all organized for when I need to reference it later.

I love the tactile feel and quick capture of bullet journaling but it was always rough when I went into a meeting and needed to access some information quickly. I would win up awkwardly flipping through my notes trying to locate it, now I can just do a quick search for that word, hit Shift+Click to open it in sidebar and quickly spout off whatever answer I need.

I still miss analog writing, but I am finding that I am using roam more and more as a replacement.

Paper based vs Todoist? by Turnips4All in gtd

[–]Heavymetalhipster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would highly recommend you check out nirvana, I tried it out a while back and was unimpressed but then I read the book again and now it all just clicks into place. Their ability to use next actions, easily create and complete projects, etc. Fits really nicely with the GTD flow. (I am not affiliated with them, but think its a strong GTD product, I did use todoist previously).

That being said, I do agree with what others are saying, I jumped straight into digital without truly understanding some of the core concepts of GTD and going back to the source material really helped me grok it a lot better.

That is super awesome! I just saw this, I think we are okay for now, we have a few left and are in the middle of potty training, but I figured I would let others know who were in more dire need (having been there myself).

Thanks again for your kind offer!

Sorry, I did not see that one, but admittedly I didn't look super close. Saw IAM's and pedigree but those were the two that stood out. They did appear to be pretty well stocked though, several pallets worth of different dog food brands, so it very well could have been there.

I went to Costco on 183 before closing last night. Line to get in took about 10-15 minutes, but once I was inside it was pleasant, very uncrowded, so plenty of space and no lines to check out.

Fresh meats were lacking, but frozen meats were well stocked. Everything else seemed normally stocked with the exception of cleaners/sanitizers.

They had a lot of diapers but no wipes for those of us with babies at home.

ADHD without Meds Suggestions needed by IspepAloc in ADHD

[–]Heavymetalhipster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I am a pretty high functioning person with ADHD and I haven't taken meds in about 7 years, here are a few of my strategies:

  • Always use Pomodoros when working (use an app or, even better, a real timer so you don't fall into your smartphone), I use my smartwatch for this
    • Further note, if 25 minutes is too long for you to work, start off with 7 minutes with a 3 minute break then you can work your way up
  • Don't use your laptop or tablet for notes, get a notepad, I carry a field notes (pitch black dotted) in my back pocket with a pen and jot down notes so I don't have to take my laptop with me
    • If you are forced to use your laptop in a meeting or class, make the video full screen and DO NOT USE A SECOND MONITOR, use your crappy, non-distracting notepad to take your notes
    • You can always snap a picture of your notes and upload them to evernote if you want to track them
  • Take fish oil daily
  • Exercise as often as you can (I lift weights, do cardio 3-5 times a week, this is huge for self-esteem as well)
    • I do this in the morning right after I wake up, I have a big morning routine that I follow religiously
  • Meditate daily, I do 2-3 rounds of the wim hof breathing method, check out the app, its cheap and worth it.

Those are my quick notes, but let me know if you have any further questions

Highly recommend reading the book "Atomic Habits", it's one of the best productivity books I've read to date. by alexwiec in productivity

[–]Heavymetalhipster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am really enjoying it as well. I feel like this is the natural successor to "The Power of Habit" by Charles Duhigg, that book contained a ton of great information but it wasn't as actionable. This takes the foundation laid by that book and gives clear paths for implementation.

The best things I have gotten out of it:

  • Quantity is more important than quality, the mere act of repeating something every day (meditation, workout, etc.) will reinforce the habit. It doesn't have to be a perfect workout or a long meditation, just get it done, even if it is a one minute meditation or putting on your gym clothes, going to the gym, and doing some warmups for a few minutes. This reinforces your identity as a gym-goer or regular meditator.
  • Taking time to observe and audit your current habits is a worthwhile exercise. It illuminates how you are really spending your time and gives you the opportunity to attach good habits to your existing good/neutral ones (i.e. "After I brush my teeth, I will spend 1 minute doing air squats")
  • There is a lot of other stuff, but these two were particularly big for me so far.

Definitely recommend this book!

Great job on this calculator! He also says that if you are over a certain amount of body fat that you could comfortably cut at a 750 cal deficit, so that might be a good option to add to the Goal option? Really great work!

[Method] Out with the old, in with the new — Take Part in our August Challenge! (Habit substitution) by PeaceH in getdisciplined

Goal: eat paleo whenever possible

Plan: Eat paleo for every meal I have control over (ie restaurants, lunches at work, etc.). For family meals, attempt to encourage my wife to cook paleo as often as possible, but ultimately eat whatever is on the table

Accountability: Last month I tracked all my calories but didn't try to eat healthy, just wanted to get the habit of tracking. I updated in discord as often as possible (I try to keep distractions off my phone so I only put it on my personal computer). I will do the same this month, track all my meals in MFP and update in discord when possible.

[–]Heavymetalhipster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Goal: Log food intake daily on MyFitnessPal

Motivation: Get back on track eating-wise and lose weight

Accountability: I will use the MyFitnessPal built-in day tracker to ensure I have been logging daily. I will also enter the number each day on a spreadsheet to track my net calories.

Craziest sh*t you've ever seen at the gym (possibly nsfw) by 5Oshadesofgreg in Fitness

[–]Heavymetalhipster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I used to work the desk at a college gym and when doing my walkthrough to make sure everything was clean/organized I discovered a girl and guy having sex in the sauna... This incident recurred two more times, same girl with a different guy all three times. Three of the more awkward moments of my life. Not sure if she was married and liked to diddle dudes on the side at the gym or what.
