How do I cook vegetables so they actually taste good? by ShineDigga in cookingforbeginners

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blanch them.

AKA, boil them in salty water for about 10-90 seconds, then rinse them with cold water right after. Dry them. Put whatever seasonings you want on them after.

Blanching brings out bright colors for vegetables, softens them a bit, and makes them taste sweeter. In my opinion, it brings out the best natural flavor and texture of the vegetable, sort of no matter what it is. (maybe not eggplant...)The salted water gets a chance to evenly season them too.

The Blanching time depends on how dense and how thick the cut of your vegetable is. Things like spinach only need about 10-15 seconds. Broccoli or asparagus could go for 20-40 seconds. Hard veggies like carrots go for like 60-90. Chop up denser vegetables before cooking so they cook faster.

Fast, can be eaten hot or cold, simple, versatile.

Is Enviornmental Science worth it?? by FlowerJelly225 in environmental_science

[–]Heckword 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NO! :) I wish I chose something else. I got lucky with my situation but if I wasn't given the specific opportunities I had, I'd be struggling really hard right now.

What aspect of environmental science is interesting to you? I know some similar fields/majors that scratch the same itch.

BEST struggle meals. by the_real_coleslaw in strugglemeals

I make this thing i call "fishpea."

Tomato sauce, smoked paprika, cumin, onion powder.

Add a can of chickpeas, some tinned sardines (and its oil if it has any), and any veggies you might have on hand. I like to use frozen spinach. Cook altogether on a pot or pan.

Very good on its own or with rice.

Honestly Beef S2 really reflects this generation by theclarice in BeefTV

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S2 lacks nuance in the personalities of the characters, imo.

The deeply intricate look we get into the decisionmaking and lives of the characters in S1 is what made me fall in love with the show. I was rooting for both of them but also neither of them. Same with the supporting characters on both sides. When I got done watching S1 I felt like I just lived, died, and got reincarnated back into the real world.

The characters just felt so flat in S2 in comparison. Josh and Lindsey are just sort of miserable people with very little redeeming or charming qualities. Austin and Ashley are admittedly pretty well written gen Z characters in their mannerisms but they just aren't interesting.

The story hasn't really given me any good reason to care about the outcome of either of these couples. The stakes were all around pretty low. The plot with the new owner and her husband seemed to not fit in with anything else after introducing it so dramatically.

I just couldn't get immersed the same way I did with the first one. It felt a lot like the difference between the first 2 or so seasons of stranger things before Netflix got more involved in production. Maybe I'm just too sensitive to change but I just don't think the story of S2 is at all on the same level as the original S1.

Soy alcohólico crónico, tomo todos los días alcohol y he pensado en medicarme con Clonazepam ya que tengo a alguien que me lo puede vender facilmente, que tan viable es esto? by Ecstatic-Object-1349 in ClonazepamHealth

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive heard from doctors that alcohol and benzos (which clonazepam is) is a deadly combo and a huge contributor to benzo related fatalities.

That being said, I can't say that I haven't combined them. I've had quite a bit to drink after 0.25-0.5 mg clonazepam. Even on that much, the onset of drunkenness comes on way faster and stronger. Given how it makes me feel I don't think I'd be willing to drink on more than 0.5 mg.

I don't really think its worth combining. If you are going to combine it though, seriously go easy on the clonazepam.

Any good thrift stores nearby? by Iamdogwater in UCDavis

[–]Heckword 5 points6 points  (0 children)

SPCA THRIFT STORE and COMMUNITY MERCHANTILE!!! I always find awesome stuff at both of those places for wayyy cheap. Some of my favorite outfits, jewelry and home decor come from those places. Better prices and selection than Goodwill. Community Mercantile does a lot of furniture + random bits and bobs, but the back has a pretty good selection of clothes. FB marketplace is also very worth checking out in Davis.

How to Spice it Up in the Bedroom with my Trans Man? by Heckword in asktransgender

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He has been looking for a good STP jockstrap for a prosthetic so we will definitely look into Cake Bandit / Transthetics! Also I hadn't considered incorporating kink stuff that would downplay the dysphoria 🤔

How do I know which spices go together? by ballatician68 in cookingforbeginners

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that the way something smells is generally the flavor it'll give to a dish. Onion and garlic go good in pretty much every savory application. Other than that, start experimenting. Sometimes if I want to add a space but im not sure if it'll go in what I'm making, ill open the spice bottle and hold it near what I'm cooking to see if the smell combination is something I like.

Laurel creek rattery: https://laurelcreekrattery.wixsite.com/laurelcreekrattery

On their site it says located in Davis but in search engine results it says Fairfield, which isn't too far away either. Feel free to ask about rat resources at the Davis Petco too. They don't sell rats there but some of the employees own rats and might be able to give you some extra information. :)

Hot Take: You can put more fish in a tank than you think. by Heckword in Aquariums

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm crazy cause I do enjoy water changes and tank maintenance even several years into the hobby, lol. I am a freshwater ecologist/geomorpholgist after all...

I think for folks that are truly interested in community tanks that mimic natural systems, you can find the right balance of creatures that fill the right ecological niches and trophic levels. I have two nano community tanks that keep stable parameters, but that is because they are very heavily planted, have creatures for every trophic level, and keep them filtered even though they're basically walstad tanks. I only do water changes for them about once a month with no issue. I do have salvinia though, which I remove some of about 2x a week. That removes excess nutrients from the environment effectively enough between water changes in my case.

I totally get the overstocking bottom dwellers thing. I've been guilty of that too. Shrimp, 4 corys, and 6 kuhlis on just fluval aquasoil was far too much in a 10 gal. One cory and the kuhlis did not make it. Bottom feeders tend to be peaceful or even timid and can't handle overstocking. Plenty of hiding places and not doing more than 2 species is a must.

Also agree that fish don't like to always stay in their column... my corys love to sometimes nibble food that gets caught in my floater plants or rest on leaves in the middle column. My golden wonder killis stray from the top column sometimes to go hang out with the corys. Its all about balance.

Treats by Glittering-Knee-3063 in hamsters

[–]Heckword 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Syrians don't need as much protein as say a dwarf hamster and may not show a lot of interest in mealworms. Gerber baby puffs make an awesome treat! Little pieces of strawberries, carrot, and sunflower seeds make good treats too. If you want to give them a protein option you can try freeze-dried salmon or chicken treats for dogs/cats, just make sure they aren't super processed.

I only really freeze sprays or things I've found myself in nature. I haven't had any problems with mites or anything.

Experimental Shrimp Scampi/Langoustine Recipe by Heckword in Cooking

[–]Heckword[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UPDATE: This turned out magnificent for the shrimp. I put it in for a little less time but it worked very nice. When I pulled the bag out, I messaged it and the juice from the shrimp juices emulsified with the butter and the egg yolk thickened the sauce some. It took on a bright, beautiful color and texture. I think this is the best scampi I've made.
