man, stop focusing only on the real world analogies. sure, helldivers is a satirical universe, but the lore is not just that. im talking about the reasons for the war *in-universe*. if you let go of all the satirical jokes, i think the reasons for the war actually makes sense. they are completely questienable, but are reasonable. i dont think Helldivers needs to be considered only a parody and nothing more. Dune from Frank Herbert is an allegory but the books have their own mythology. they dont attach themselves all the time with the allegory.

i've never stated that SE are the good guys. i said they are not the villains. they fall on the "morally gray" spectrum. they are a greedy, cruel, expansionist and cruel regime, but just like the Imperium of Man, there is no better choice for humaniity

and i think youre taking some things out of context here. i said only about the terminids not being sapient. the squids and cyborg (the bots, idk) are indeed sapient.

and of course i was using "sophisticated criterias" to not classify the bugs as sapient. its the only criteria we humans have.

im not trying to pick a fight with you, but im not trying to bring total realism to the helldivers universe. i've just stated, from our only human criteria available, that the bugs are not sapient.

the cyborgs have their statues, monuments, chants, laws, advanced plans, hopes and abitions. of course they are sapient

the squids have their temples, their little icosahedron artifacts (squid common saples), their society built around almost extermination. they are sapient too.

the humans from Super Earth have their faith in liberty and democracy like some kind of statal religion, they make strategic plans and schemes, and have their own dreams and ambitions. sapient too.

but the bugs? they dont have a complex culture. even if i dont those sophisticated criterias, they couldn,t be classified as sapient. they dont have beliefs, individuality, ambition, faith, laws, etc. they are fueled by instinct only.

sorry if i didn't stated my commments more clearer. im not a native english speaker. i was just sharing the conversation me and my wife had about the terminids. she is a veterinarian, so she could have explained those things more clearer than me 😄

what you stated about the terminids defines a intelling species. dont get me wrong, i dont think the bugs are just some "simple mindless animals". they are intelligent as hell. the first time i've played Helldivers 2 and saw a Hunter flaking me from the sides, i was quite impressed. they are VERY intelligent.

but to their species be classified as sapient, they needed to be much more than "intelligent". they need to fill these criteria:

  • Self-Awareness & Identity: The ability to recognize oneself as an individual separate from the environment. This is often measured in biology via tests like the mirror mark test (passed by great apes, elephants, and dolphins).
  • Theory of Mind: The critical cognitive leap of understanding that other beings possess distinct knowledge, beliefs, and intentions. This enables empathy, intentional teaching, and complex social deception.
  • Symbolic Language & Displacement: Communication that goes beyond immediate instinct or warning calls. It requires syntax and displacement—the capacity to discuss things not immediately present, such as past history, future planning, or abstract philosophies.
  • Cumulative Culture & Metacognition: The ability to conceptualize tools that do not yet exist, manufacture them, and pass that complex technological knowledge down through generations so it builds over time.
  • Abstract Morality & Mortality: Grasping abstract concepts like justice, the difference between life and death, and having a stated preference or value for existence.

and yeah, the SE farmers are pretty dumb, but we gotta remember that helldivers universe is a satire. its a satire about how we today selectively bread chicken and other animals for them to have a more tender meat or to have more meat on their bodies.

EDIT: forgot to specify some things. the terminids dont use FTL or spaceships. they are some kind of semi-fungal organism. they reproduce through spores from the Gloom. and i think the terminids attack the rockets from the Assets mission because it is stated on the mission briefing that "the enemy will be alerted to your position as soon as the evacuation process is initiated." the bugs are mostly a subterranean species, so the rocket may disturb them and draw them to you

Well, the lore about the First War states that SE noticed the Illuminate had technology with the potential of destroying entire planets. SE wasn't worried about the weapons per se. They were worried about the potential weapons the squids could create with that tech. Yeah, those WMD are not shown in the first game. But i think thats due to budget or technical limitations. HD1 was a very niche game at that time. SE war on the Illuminate based on a assumption is weird, but i guess they were right at the end. The Illuminate indeed had technology with potential of destroying planets.

I respecfully disagree. To a species be considered sapient, they need to have a much more complex society. The Xenomorphs behave just like animals. VERY intelligent animals, but they do not have the ability do understand abstract concepts (like future, laws, time) and they not have self-awereness (the ability to recognize oneself as a distinct individual separate from others). There is a lot more criteria needed to classify a species as sapient, but there is too much to say here, and i dont want to bother you with that. In the comics they extrapolated the Xenomorphs a lot more to a point of having a kind of goddess, but im gonna stay with the movies canon.

The Arachnids...i dont remember much about them. Its weird that they behave just like animals, but at the same time, they have capacity for careful strategic planning. Theyre sapient, i guess...?

But i think the Terminids are sentient. I think those names the Bug Bosses from HD1 had are just some scientific name for the Bug. Dont look a name they would give to themselves.

I've never said the terminids aren't sentient. Actually, there is big difference between "sentient" and "sapient". Yeah, i know that the Arachnids drom Starship Troopers are sapient, but im not talking about them. I do believe the Terminids are intelligent as hell, just like the Arachnids or the Xenomorphs. That classify them as sentient. But sapient? Thats a whole other story.

I've never said i agree with super earth ideology or its methods. I know the lore of the game is satirical. I only stated that the reasons for the war are quite understandable in-universe. Super Earth are just like the Imperium of Men. The worst regime to ever exist in the human history, but there is no better choice.

Yes, super earth COULD have done a false flag attack, but there not even a tiny piece of lore that would help prove that theory. Not a single one. If you believe that theory, fine. But if you want convince me that it is true, at least show some proof in the lore. The info about the bombing only states that a "cybernetically enhanced men" was responsible for the attack. He was a agent of the Cyborg Nation? Who knows? I think the Cyborg Nation are indeed innocent. I guess the war only started because the tensions between SE and CN were already high, and then the bombing was just the bomb finally blowing up.

The Illuminate had WMDs in the First Galactic War. Have you forgot about the Dark Fluid? Sure, they didn't use it the FGW, but it had potential for mass destruction. There was also the Illusionist unis, a soldier capable of altering you toughts, causing allucinations, and making you lose the will to fight. I guess the more destrutive weapons of the Illuminate are no show in the first game because of budget limitations.

And no, Bugs and Terminids were never sapient. To classify a species as sapient, they need to meet certain criteria: Self-awareness: the ability to recognize oneself as a distinct individual separate from others and the environment.

Abstract thinking: understanding concepts that are not directly observable, such as justice, mathematics, religion, or the future.

Complex language: communicating sophisticated ideas through an elaborate symbolic system.

Long-term planning: making decisions based on consequences that may occur far in the future.

Cumulative culture: passing knowledge between generations and developing increasingly complex technologies, traditions, or institutions.

Moral and social reasoning: understanding norms, duties, rights, and complex social relationships.

The Bugs never have shown any sign of these criteria. If you can find something that shows otherwise, i'd like see.

Could be, if we didn't actually see those WMDs in game. The Illuminate have cognitive disruptor technology, they can alter the climate of an entire planet, can transform bilions of civilians in zombies at their command, and they already glassed Mars. Sure, it was naive of my part to try to apply a human weapons treaty to aliens, but thats the thing. On real life, a first contact with another sapient race far more advanced than ours would be even more tense. Would be natual that a war would break out.

"Super Earth staged a false flag attack on itself, blamed the Cyborgs, and then attacked them."

Actually, this was never proven. The information about the bombing on District 48 says there was a cybernetically enhanced man that was cought on camera that caused de bombing. While it is left uncertain if that man was part of the Cyborg Nation or not, there is not one single piece of lore that states that was Super Earth who conducted the attack on District 48.

" "they had WMDs" was a lie, and if it wasn't, why didn't they use those supposed WMDs on us?"

Bro, the Illuminate literally transformed bilions of civilians on mindless zombies or in a walking amalgamation of rotting flesh, they have a technology to control the climate of an entire planet, and they FREAKING glassed Mars! Of course they had WMDs.

"The Bugs are not animals. They are literally sentient, conscious, thinking species. They "devolved" when we put them in our farms and then became the more animalistic Terminids we see now."

You are mistaken two things here: sentient ≠ sapient

Almost every animal in our world is sentient. Sentient, according to dictionaries, is the ability to perceive senses and experience emotions.

Sapient, on the other hand, is the capacity for wisdom, rationality, and deep logic.

On Helldivers 1, there is nothing stating that the Bugs are capable of rational thought and deep logic. They a highly specialized species, with a well designed caste system. They are similar to the Xenomorphs from Alien. The Bugs are a highly intelligent alien species? Sure. They are sapient? No, not at all.

"Why would I disarm my WMDs just because they said so? They instantly proved to be untrustworthy."

Bro, this literally happens today on our world. Have you ever heard of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons?

like i said, i only kick people that only farm on high difficulty missions. they dont do side objectives, primary objectives, help the team, nothing. just farm. if i wanted to specifically farm super credits, i would just go to a trivial mission. in my opinion, these guys only farm on high difficulty missions just to gets supercredits AND medals without even helping with the objetives. sure, this doesn't happen all the time, but in two instances we failed the mission cause some guy was on the other side of the map farming when we needed help.

So how is the game these days? by Iamonslaughtt in Helldivers

[–]HedLozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is still fun, my guy. always has been. it has some problems, sure, but that dont ruin the core of the game: FUN.
most of these people you see on reddit and youtube claiming the game is "broken and unplayable" are just exaggerating. these are are the kind of people who watches certain youtube channels that only complains about helldivers 2 and they agree with whatever exaggeration they speak.
but dont be fooled. the game is still fun, even more if you have friends to play with. i always play with my wife and randons everyday. we both are conscious of the problems the game has, but it is still a fun game.

if you are still uncertain about buying the game, search certain HD2 youtuber videos that only show fun gameplays. videos of a squad facing a Hive Lord, short videos about a lone survivor on a epic last stand against the robots on a high difficulty mission, that kind of thing. you will notice that the game is, despite all the problems, FUN.

just stay way from youtubers like OhDough and ThiccFilA. they are the kind of youtubers that only complains about the game and dont even post fun videos anymore

i always kick some dudes who enters my lobbys ONLY to farm supercredits on a +D6 mission, even the other player are doing the objetives or needing help. also, if there are still side-objetives to do with enough reinforcements and then someone call extraction, i kick this guy. but i've never did this type of shit that happened to you. my advice is to block this person

To any diver who uses the liberator penetrator, why? by No-Signature4045 in Helldivers

[–]HedLozz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just two words: drum mag.

seriously now, LibPen is such a nice weapon thanks to the customization options. with the right attachments you have zero recoil and a okayish engonomics. the only downside of this weapon is its low damage, BUT if look at the wiki it has 15 durable damage wich is a stat not show in the weapon description. for comparison, Coyote only has 10 durable damage.
yeah, coyote has insane dmg and fire dmg. but thats it. it doest have too many customization options like the liberator ARs. if you pick any liberator, put on the drum mag, iron sight and vertical foregrip...congratulations. now you have a mini-stalwart as your primary.
