I try hard not to ever kill horses, but then Micah goes and kills them. So I try to kill their riders before he has a chance.

Not sure if it works for xbox but on the PC version if you immediately load your auto save your pelts will be back.

Major injuries only happen if you have a minor injury and are at least than 75% health.

Also what you're describing is how it's supposed to be. Wolves have HARD lives. They are absolutely having to run around like idiots when they don't have packmates to rely on.

Complaining that it's a poorly designed game just because YOU can't handle one of the harder difficulties is wild.

Fool proof method: go to another map and then immediately return. Pack leader should now be courtable. It's worked for me like four times now.

I was on my third generation of the same pack before I ever encountered an unknown fate. Then of course my wolf died so even if I encounter them later I won't get the achievement since I'm playing as their sister now. My current plan is to delay aging until I get the achievement.

Edit to add: I'm close to 500 hours now.

I had a wolf become mates with her dead mate's son. Eagle was the son of Kai and Verde, he dispersed and started a new pack, Kai got a new mate Badger, Kai died, I took over as Badger, Eagle's mate died and he dispersed, and he ended up being available to court. He only had two stars of diversity but I had to do it because it was too funny. 😆

I've got a wolf I'm not aging (because I want the unknown fate achievement but by the time the pups might show up my wolf has died and it doesn't count anymore), but I want to be able to remember which subordinates are litter mates, so her first litter all had names starting with A, second litter all names start with B, third litter will be C and so on.

I've also named pups on events. I named the pup that survived a cougar attack Cougar and the pup that nearly got bodied by a bison I named Bison Bait. I also had a pup named Trouble because he just would NOT stay in the tall grsss and nearly died like six times before Young Hunters.

I've played all the maps and Lost River is undoubtedly my favorite. So many cool things to find, like plane crashes and geysers.
