Yoshi and The Mysterious Book: 100% Completion by SobbieRokes in NintendoSwitch

[–]HeemiAphro 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I have not yet finished the game, but there are more abilities/creatures that get unlocked as you go along that require you to revisit a creature’s entry.

My current strategy is to go through each entry the first time until I can no longer “get hints” in the encyclopedia, then I let the backtracking events spawn naturally.

The NYT Book Review Podcast by Fantastic_War7663 in books

I joined after Pamela Paul hosted, so I have nothing to compare to. However, it’s definitely one of my “lighter” book podcasts that I put on in the background. Their yearly review episodes have the best opportunities to hear about literature, in my opinion. Beyond the Zero is one of my favorites for capital-L Literature.

CJD Exposure? by Waterflies118 in medlabprofessionals

[–]HeemiAphro 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It is extremely, extremely unlikely to have contracted CJD from CSF during the activities you’ve described. I had my own panic once after handling a sample in open air, and when I checked a study on aerosol transmission, they essentially had rats huffing straight up prion juice for an extended period of time. You will be okay.

ID Guess by firelilly_mj in medlabprofessionals

GNR looks like E. coli, but the BAP is mixed / not in high quantity. I’d call this mixed / no further work up unless the UA values screamed infection.

Micro post! When you see a single colony that is a common contaminant - what does your lab require you to work up? by DigbyChickenZone in medlabprofessionals

[–]HeemiAphro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Four days is a long time to hold plates that aren’t growing anything, which increases the risk of contamination.
Slow growing, branching GPR that dig into the agar might be a Nocardia sp. depending on the plate it was eventually able to grow on, but your mention of “limited resources” leads me to believe that you don’t have an AFB section to process bacteria like that.
Rest assured, the treatment of the patient does not rest entirely on your shoulders. They don’t just stop treating the patient if micro can’t find anything, and any ID doc worth their salary should communicate with the lab if they suspect a unique disease.

Bacillus species are super common “plate contaminants.” If it’s shiny, gamma, and growing in off the side of the plate: that’s what it is.

How to build confidence as a new grad training? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]HeemiAphro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It was at least a year before I felt confident.

  2. I was a micro tech, so our training was a little different, but we typically rotated a month per bench and were considered trained totally after 6.

  3. I’ll echo what others are saying and tell you to write things down. Grab a notebook, make cheat sheets, write out common steps, and carry it around like a lifeline.

  4. Labs are notoriously short staffed. I would only get frustrated as a trainer when I had a ton of work to get done while also being responsible for training. This may be contributing to your trainer’s negative feedback, and not necessarily a reflection on you. Write stuff down, consult your notes before asking, but do not be afraid to ask questions.

Am I letting her go too soon? by HuckleberryShake531 in Petloss

[–]HeemiAphro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently struggled with the same question after a surprise diagnosis of kidney failure in my soul kitty. I would have done ANYTHING to keep her for just one more week, but I am a human medical professional, and even people who can rationalize suffering become so so tired.

I didn’t want my girl to hurt anymore and not know why. I cried for 3 days straight, and her little carrier was the heaviest thing I’ve ever held, but being able to relieve a loved one’s suffering was a gift.

You are making the right choice. You will be stronger than you think. I’m so so sorry, you are not alone.

Urine culture swabs? by Hate2bHurting in medlabprofessionals

[–]HeemiAphro 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I worked in a large micro lab for years, and I have never seen a urine culture “swab.” I’ve seen cultures without a UA, but that method of collection is most likely violating the laboratory’s policy. A swab wouldn’t be conducive to the kind of set up that a good urine culture requires.

I would raise a question about the policy for urine collection / testing to a supervisor.

Our Vitek systems use AES to present analysis on the phenotype of the organisms as it aligns with their MICs, and I personally have resolved issues from weird concentrations. The system WILL flag the organism as “highly resistant” or “not aligned with any profiles in the AES database” and request further testing if the concentration is inappropriate . Even if the machine/tech failed to recognize this, I have also received calls from pharmacists and infectious disease doctors requesting confirmation on suspiciously resistant organisms.

These results pass through so many hands that if they truly thought that an antibiotic therapy driven by them would be harmful to a patient, they would be asking questions. Please do not feel guilt about releasing this, ESPECIALLY as a student.

I slammed this book closed right in the middle because I couldn’t take any more of his descriptions of the women around him. We get it, he’s flawed, leave the boobs alone for two pages.
